2024 | Guidalberto & Le Difese

Always a popular release, the latest vintage of Guidalberto, Sassicaia's fabulous younger sibling, hits the market today at £275 per 6 bottles IB. Guidalberto is a superb introduction to the famous Super Tuscan estate, but it is more than just a second wine. It combines Sassicaia's trademark Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from its renowned vineyards with sumptuous Merlot to give silky fruit, a glorious opulence and huge individual character.

Tenuta San Guido has also released their brilliant everyday drinking wine called
Le Difese. It was initially made just for private consumption amongst the estate's friends and family. Too good not to share, it was commercialised in the early 2000s and in that time has become just as popular as Sassicaia itself! A blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 55% Sangiovese, Le Difese delivers the Sassicaia style and terroir in an approachable, early drinking format.

Aromatic, floral and inviting the 2024 Difese is a charmer that will delight from the off. Crushed red berry fruits, mint and spice overlay the gorgeous elegant tannins and juicy texture. As always this ‘3rd wine’ produced by Tenuta San Guido is a blend of selected lots of Cabernet Sauvignon from Sassicaia and Guidalberto, plus some Sangiovese. A scintillating entry point to the wines of this famous estate.

  • Matthew Jukes, February 2026, Score: 17.5

The Sangiovese in this blend is not grown in Bolgheri but sourced from two properties in Chianti and Chianti Rufina. 2024 was a challenging vintage, with frequent rain in the Spring and also during the harvest. The barrels used here are second- and third-fill Guidalberto oak, which adds immeasurably to this wine’s class. Time has certainly tempered their woody quality and brought unmistakable warmth and discreet spice notes to this wine. The fruit is more forward than the mighty 2023, and yet despite the slightly slender framework, the balance is perfect, and the juiciness is lip-smacking. Production is around 375,000 bottles per year, so there ought to be enough to go around, but the restaurant trade is usually the first focus here, so if you fancy some for your dining room table (as opposed to your cellar, as this wine is ready to go), get in quick! The tannins are fully ripe, and I cannot see this wine evolving much over its life, given that it is already showing superb refinement and complexity. Place your orders now. The fair pricing usually makes this a steal!

The 2024 Guidalberto, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, boasts crushed flowers, red toned fruit, cinnamon, liquorice and delicate oak tones. This medium weight, stylish wine is elegant, charming and refined on the palate and will be a delight to enjoy with a couple of years of bottle age.

  • Wine Advocate, February 2026, Score: 92

The Tenuta San Guido 2024 Guidalberto shows spice and drive through the mid-palate, opening with fragrant notes of cherry shaped by its equal blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is lively and punchy in character with lifted aromatics and fine definition, supported by bright acidity that keeps the palate fresh and agile. Tannins show a touch of dryness, adding grip and structure, while the overall impression remains energetic and easy to appreciate. Drink Date: 2026 – 2032.

  • Matthew Jukes, February 2026, Score: 18+

The oak component here is more definitely strident, with 13 months spent in 225l barriques (90% French, 10% Hungarian/Slavonian/German), and 40% are new. For my part, the oak is a little too punchy and dominant. Given its blend, this is a more upright, closed style, with slightly incongruous spiciness and a sense of rawness and tension on the finish, suggesting enthusiastic extraction. It appears that the Cabernet and Merlot skins have released a touch too much sourness and traction, which melds with the oak, resulting in unresolved grippiness on the finish. There is no doubt that the fruit is initially delicious, even if it is somewhat dry on the finish. While some will enjoy the attack, this wine will be so much more attractive in five years, and, by contrast to Le Difese, it would be an error to open it this side of 2030.
