The 2023 Sémillon comes from three vineyards, with the oldest vines planted in 1902 and 61% planted in 1936. Matured in 70% new French oak for 14 months, it has a glorious bouquet with yellow plum, jasmine and wax resin scents, beautifully defined. The palate has a fine line of acidity, bright and fresh, lovely texture with a pithy finish.

Given the Semillon warm-up afforded by the four wines above, instead of this wine being the first in the set, it was, unusually, the fifth! This meant it didn’t have to pick any locks, since the door was wide open! Perhaps for this reason, this beauty slipped down a treat, with a seductive, wonderfully flattering welcome, and while it seemed almost too good to be true, I have no doubt it will tighten up over the next few months. It is interesting how some vintages show greater complexity and layers at different points in their evolution. Today, the Semillon Gris (some vines have mutated over time) portion looks spicy, white-pepper spiked, and ginger-lily smooched, bringing a lip-smacking immediacy to the experience. Yes, yes, and yes!

One of a handful of Cape whites that I buy most years and expect to cellar for a decade, this is a subtle, refined, early picked Franschhoek blend of Semillon and 3% Muscat d'Alexandrie. Deftly fermented in 70% new barrels, it has beguiling aromas of vanilla spice, cardamom and saffron, layers of tangerine, beeswax and fresh lemons and understated concentration. Although the estate has been in existence since 1776, it wasn’t until talented young winemaker, Marc Kent, bought the property back in 1993 that Boekenhoutskloof started to see its stock rise; in the last decade the estate has twice been voted Winery of the Year by distinguished South African journalist John Platter. Restoring the vineyard to its former glory, the new owners established plantings of European varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Grenache. While Boekenhoutskloof is better known for its exceptional red wines, the estate also produces a sumptuous white from old vine Sémillon, as well as a few cases of their Noble Late Harvest – a celestial sweet wine made in the mould of a Sauternes.Read less

Region

Franschoek

Modest in size, but big in stature, the Franschhoek region of South Africa has a reputation for producing some of the finest wines in the country. Afrikaans for ‘French corner’, there is a heavy European influence in this small valley, which can be found in the wines produced here. While Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are the main grapes behind Franschhoek’s full-bodied reds, the region also produces some exceptional whites from Semillon, as well as Sauternes-style sweet wines.
