From one of the cooler sites at Kumeu, and always the earliest ripening, Hunting Hill is always an unspoken star of the lineup. Juicy apples and pears on the nose, with a notable floral presence - white flowers and orange blossom - with the sensation of crystalline water running over smooth pebbles. Incredibly elegant and refined, you'd be tempted to think you had Puligny in your glass!

  • Jancis Robinson, September 2025, Score: 17.5+

Bright mid straw colour. Really flirtatious, really lean and fresh. Just a joy already! Real concentration and raciness. Sophisticated. Accessible but will obviously be long-lived. Super-clean. Neat and persistent. Super!

  • EL, September 2025, Score: 93-95

The 2024 Hunting Hill Chardonnay is the ripest in alcohol of the 2024 releases, and it feels powerfully layered and driven on the palate. This is rich, almost thunderous in its positioning, with salted citrus and exotic spices (star anise/fennel/scraped vanilla pod). The oak here is polished and elegant, smoothing down any stray, loose hairs. The barrels have been air dried for three years and lightly toasted. The finish is tight and focused. This was tasted as a tank sample prior to filtration and bottling.

Producer

Kumeu River

Kumeu River is one of the longest established and most recognised producers in New Zealand. Founded in 1944 by Mick Brajkovich, a Croatian immigrant, the estate was one of the early pioneers in Auckland that helped establish the country as an excellent wine producing area. Today, second and third generations work the 30 hectares of vines planted on clay and limestone soils. Winemaker Michael Brajkovich, who was also New Zealand’s first Master of Wine, harvests all the grapes by hand and uses traditional Burgundian methods such as barrel fermentation. Kumeu River's Chardonnays have won many accolades the world over. From their entry level Chardonnay to their single vineyard wines, which have been mistaken by top critics for some very smart Meursaults, Chassagnes and Pulignys, they represent fantastic value for money.
