En Primeur | Burghound Recommends

Although the field of serious Burgundy critics is becoming ever more crowded, Allen Meadows (Burghound) still stands out as the original and the best. So, when he releases his review of a new vintage it is worth sitting up and taking notice. He is positively rapturous, commenting that the 2019 wines are: “Ripe, fresh, concentrated and very high-quality.” If you have not yet dipped a toe in the fabulous Burgundy 2019 pool, now is the moment.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 93-95

The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a dense, quite opaque bouquet that demands coaxing from the glass, reluctantly revealing sultry blackberry and wild strawberry scents laced with rose petal and potpourri. The medium-bodied palate offers fine-grained tannins that frame the mineral-rich black fruit laced with orange peel and ferrous notes toward the persistent finish. Very good potential here. A serious Echézeaux. 2023 - 2050

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 92-94

A slightly riper nose flashes equally good complexity but the aromatic composition is different as here the fruit is both darker and spicier. The rich, palate drenching and very suave, indeed even velvety, flavors possess a dusty and exceptionally long if mildly warm finish where a deft but not invisible touch of wood surfaces. Drink 2033+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 95-97

Fine deep purple. More perfumed than the Clos Vougeot, with a wealth of really ripe dark raspberry fruit on the palate, which holds together really well, no heat, no spoilage just amazing length. Congratulations on a beautiful Echezeaux.

rom one of the best performing crus in the greater Barolo area, the 2010 Barolo Villero is beautifully balanced and tonic with a zesty, fresh quality of fruit that bodes well for the wine’s overall longevity. This is a cooler vineyard designate. Delicate layers of crushed rose, spice, licorice and tobacco peel off in steady succession. Villero shows a firm tannic grip in the mouth that adds momentum to its staying power and personality.

The 2020 Peymouton is soft, supple and easygoing, all of which make it an excellent choice for drinking with just a few years in bottle. Silky tannins wrap around a core of black cherry, plum, espresso, leather and spice. The 2020 is not especially complex, but it is impeccably balanced and a real joy to taste. Drink 2026 - 2040

  • Matthew Jukes, May 2021, Score: 16.5+

Sauvignon Chunky and square-jawed on the palate and dark and meat-stock-like on the finish, there is a lot of bang for your buck here, but this is not the most refined of wines. The fruit is certainly ripe and the oak is nicely judged, too, so I am happy to recommend it, but please do note that the fruit is rather blunt and in need of time.

  • Jeb Dunnuck, May 2021, Score: 91-93

Lots of brambly red and black fruits as well as leafy herbs and tobacco define the bouquet of the 2020 Château Peymouton. Medium-bodied, it has a nicely concentrated, rich, yet focused mouthfeel that brings plenty of tannins. Made by the team of Jean-Pierre Moueix and from a vineyard near Château Laroque, on the eastern, cooler side of Saint-Emilion, it will need 3-5 years of bottle age and keep for 10-15.

  • Neal Martin, May 2021, Score: 87-89

The 2020 Joanin Bécot was affected by a hailstorm in May which resulted in some Cabernet Franc being parsed out from the blend, so this year there is half the normal production. It has quite a dense and quite earthy nose, introverted black fruit mixed with potpourri and traces of orange zest, the latter becoming more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with dry, gritty tannins with a smudge of dark chocolate towards the sandy finish. It needs a little more flesh around the bones, but that should come during its barrel maturation. Drink 2025-2030

Full of life, with a blueberry coulis burst on the attack and raspberry leaf edging. Some austerity to the tannins, but settles in to the glass, and this should be ready to go within a year or two of bottling. A yield of 20hl/ha, low mainly from the hail at the end of May rather than the drought. They lost around 40% of the vineyard (also why less Cabernet Franc is in the blend than usual). Consultant Thomas Duclos, technical director Jean de Cornuaud. Readers looking for a good case purchase that will provide lovely, classic drinking over the coming decade should look at the 2020 Château Joanin Bécot. Medium-bodied, beautifully fruited, and textured, with ripe tannins and a great mid-palate, it’s a no-brainer purchase.

  • Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021, Score: 92-94

The combination of fresh, savory, spiced fruits, plums, mint and cherries is great from the get-go. Medium-bodied, soft, silky and pure, with a beautiful sweetness to fruits on the mid-palate, the wine ends with gentle polished kirsch and juicy plums. The wine is made from blending 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. This is clearly a new level of quality for Joanin Becot.

Here the nose is presently sufficiently reduced as to render an evaluation difficult. More interesting are the racy, intense and transparent middle weight flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract where the latter helps to buffer the moderately austere, serious and strikingly long finale. I very much like the contrast between an almost delicate mid-palate and the bold, powerful and even muscular backend. Drink 2033+. Don't miss! Outstanding

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 91-95

Dark purple, slightly reductive nose. Then a really classy attack. This is often my favourite wine in the cellar and may well be again once the light reduction which gives a mix of blackcurrant leaf and a touch of torrefaction. Beautiful harmony otherwise and a fine long finish.

The Bruno Giacosa 2017 Barbaresco Rabajà is a fine and delicate wine that throws a curveball at our expectations of this notoriously hot and dry vintage. The wine is exceedingly generous when it comes to its fruit, especially its blackcurrant and plum, but what steals the show is that elegant mineral note that so seamlessly cedes to spice, licorice and cinnamon. Rabajà is one of the most distinctive growing sites in Barbaresco, thanks to its white stony soils that leave such a strong imprint on its wines. Disgorged with six grams per liter dosage, the 2007 Brut Cuvée Nicolas François is showing very nicely, offering up aromas of fresh bread, citrus oil, crisp yellow orchard fruit, white flowers, verbena, macadamia nut and hints of biscuity complexity to come. Full-bodied, chiseled but fleshy, its vinous core of fruit cloaks the vintage's brisk acids to achieve real plenitude in a year that's sometimes rather tautly austere. Long and penetrating and complemented by a pretty pinpoint mousse, this is a real success. Drink 2021 - 2041.

In other words, as good as it gets for villages. The wine was done mostly in tank with about 15% of the lots vinified in oak. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. (Originally published in May 2021)

  • Wine Advocate, September 2021, Score: 97

  • Matthew Jukes, October 2020, Score: 19.5+

2007 Billecart-Salmon, Cuvée Nicolas François is an absolute joy. [...] In terms of sophistication, elegance and unrivalled precision, this is the wine to buy. I raved about the 2007 Cuvée Louis and this wine is made in a similar vein. This is a sensational vintage for Billecart and NF will outlive Louis given that it has more horsepower under the bonnet. [...] I am in complete awe as to how these wines are so fine and so laser-sighted in their youth. NF is a class apart.

A blend of 90% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 4% Malbec, the 2018 La Muse was matured 16 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the nose delivers a powerful perfume of cherry pie, blackberry preserves and baked plums, followed by suggestions of red roses, cast-iron pan, underbrush and unsmoked cigars, plus wafts of licorice and oolong tea. Medium to full-bodied, the black fruit and exotic spice layers flow so gracefully over the palate, textured by plush tannins and lifted with seamless freshness, finishing epically long and achingly fragrant. The intensity and complexity of aromas and flavors—all waltzing in captivating harmony—cannot fail to make your head spin in the best possible way. Electrifying! Drink 2025-2055. Composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec, the 2018 La Joie displays an opaque purple-black color, slowly unfurling to offer profound notes of crème de cassis, preserved plums and boysenberries, with hints of rare beef, pencil lead, black olives and lilacs, plus touches of fertile loam and crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate has jaw-dropping elegance and poise, featuring a solid backbone of firm, very fine-grained tannins and bold freshness to support the intense mineral-laced black fruit layers, finishing long with loads of savory and floral sparks. Simply breathtaking! Drink 2024-2044. Composed of 82% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot and 6% Malbec, the 2018 Le Désir was aged for 16 months in 100% new French oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, it is a little closed to begin, soon unfurling to offer glimpses at notes of kirsch, raspberry preserves and mulberry scents, plus hints of cedar chest, crushed rocks, bay leaves, Sichuan pepper and lavender with a waft of sandalwood. The medium to full-bodied palate has tons of freshness to support the melange of preserved red and black fruits, textured by grainy tannins, finishing with a lingering peppery kick. It may require just a little more time to come around than the La Joie and La Muse, and then I suspect this beauty is going to reward the patient. Drink 2025-2040.

Checking in as 90% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Malbec that was raised in new French oak, the 2018 La Muse reveals a dense purple hue to go with plenty of black cherry and currant fruits as well as cedar pencil, graphite, dark chocolate, and smoked tobacco. Ripe, full-bodied, and brilliantly balanced on the palate, with both elegance and incredible opulence, it's a hypothetical mix of Châteaux Canon and Lafite. This masterpiece of a Merlot can be drunk any time over the coming 20-30 years. Give bottles an hour in a decanter if drinking any time soon. Drink 2021-2051 Lastly, the 2018 La Joie does everything right and offers a Château Lafite-like style in both its aromatics and its elegant, seamless mouthfeel. Gorgeous blackcurrants, lead pencil shavings, damp earth, unsmoked tobacco, and woodsmoke nuances all develop with time in the glass and this is one of those wines that offers something new every time you come back to the glass. Rich, medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced, and incredibly elegant, it has ripe, polished, yet substantial tannins, remarkable purity of fruit, and a thrilling finish. Give bottles 4-5 years and it will keep for 30 years or more. Drink 2025-2056 The Cabernet Franc blend of the trio, the 2018 Le Desir is 82% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot, and 6% Malbec, and as with all these wines, it was brought up in new barrels. Ruby/purple and not completely opaque, it offers up a classic Cabernet Franc nose of mostly red fruits, spring flowers, damp earth, cedary spices, and truffle. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shines for its incredible elegance and purity more than outright power, yet it still brings plenty of richness. With ultra-fine tannins, perfect balance, and one heck of a great finish, it's another great, great wine from this estate.

Plush damson and blueberry on the nose, there is juice and a tightrope walking concentration of fruits. An excellent Clos Fourtet, with a juicy edge where the magic of limestone in dry summers is very much showing through. A yield of 40 hl/ha. 14 to 18 months ageing in underground limestone cellars. 2021 sees 20 years of the Cuvelier family at Clos Fourtet and this is an excellent wine to showcase what a brilliant job they have done here. Score could go higher after barrel ageing. Drink 2028-2044

  • Matthew Jukes, May 2021, Score: 17.5+

While there is seemingly a forest of oak standing in front of the fruit this is still a forcefully fruity and heady wine with both black fruit and also blueberry tones in the mix. There are plum and mulberry nuances, too, which add to the complexity, but much of this exuberance is shut down by the earthy tannins which swarm the palate and dry everything out. This will be a medium to long-term wine and the fruit is reeling from the battering it is taking from the oak, but the fruit will win through given time.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2021, Score: 17

One of the biggest successes on the upper plateau is the 2020 Château Clos Fourtet, and it does everything right in the vintage. A magical, perfumed bouquet of red plums, black cherries, white truffle, and white flowers just screams Saint-Emilion, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, flawless overall balance, a dense mid-palate, and a liqueur of rocks-like minerality on the palate. Building incrementally with time in the glass, this is thrilling stuff that should offer some up-front appeal in its youth yet benefit from 7-8 years in the cellar and keep for 30 years or more. Bravo! The blend is 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Cabernet Franc that’s still resting in 50% new French oak.

  • Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021, Score: 96-98

Dark garnet in color, the wine gets your attention quickly with its licorice, smoke, dark cocoa, chalk and plummy aromas. Pure silk and velvet on the palate, with a fabulous sense of purity in the fruits, lift, length, richness, concentration and minerality. This is clearly a top vintage for Clos Fourtet that will age for decades. The wine was made from blending 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% ABV.

The freshly crushed mint leaf finish is beautiful, and this is is ripped with powerful nuanced fruit, tobacco and earthy flavours, followed by waves of violet flowers. Good quality, not as exuberant as some years of Clerc Milon. First year of Caroline Artaud to oversee the entire vintage, as Jean-Philippe Danjoy has headed over to Mouton. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 50% new oak. There is also 0.6% of Carmanère in the blend. Drink 2028-2044 (JA)

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2021, Score: 17.5+

The nose is a little muted on Clerc Milon and the palate seems a little more slender than usual, too, but this is not surprising when you read the super-fit 13.28% alcohol. While it might seem like this wine is perhaps not quite plush enough to support the oak and the tannins, which are rather noble, that there is surprising energy behind the scenes. Going back to the nose, there is a haunting red fruit aspect to Clerc Milon which, combined with the darker tones on the palate, is yearning to be set free. This is an extremely elegant wine and one which will certainly open up beautifully given time.

The 2020 Lynch-Bages is curiously backward on the nose, showing earthy black fruit mixed with bay leaf and pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded, pliant tannins. Bold and assertive, there's plenty of concentration, though it doesn't quite have the same precision on the finish as its peers in this flight. This is another great wine that is perhaps just entering an awkward adolescence. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

  • Neal Martin, May 2021, Score: 94-96

The 2020 Lynch-Bages contains proportionately more Merlot in the blend this year (31%) and will be aged for 18 months in 75% new oak. It has an intriguing bouquet, quite complex and classic in style, featuring tightly wound black fruit mixed with cedar, mint and touches of the estuary. One sniff and you know that the vines are in close proximity to the sea. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive weight on the entry, the tannins almost immediately coating the mouth (the IPT is 93, fairly high). But everything remains balanced thanks to the fine acidic thread, and it begins to firm up, becoming quite structured and, dare I say, reminiscent of Latour toward the finish. This is a Lynch-Bages that clearly will deserve long-term aging because there is real substance to this wine, and that will only increase during élevage. This is a great Lynch-Bages. The Cazes family should build a new winery to celebrate. 2027-2055

  • Antonio Galloni, December 2022, Score: 95+

The 2020 Lynch-Bages is a real powerhouse. Élevage appears to have amplified the virile, brooding qualities that were present in barrel. In so many vintages, Lynch-Bages is a wine of elegance and finesse. Those qualities may emerge here too, in time. Black cherry, plum, espresso, licorice and lavender add to an impression of brooding intensity. Formidable tannins will take years to soften. The 2020 is a gorgeous wine, but it is also a very atypical Lynch. Drink 2030-2060

  • Antonio Galloni, June 2021, Score: 93-95

The 2020 Lynch-Bages is deep, polished and so sensual. Dark cherry fruit, lavender, spice, leather and pipe tobacco fill out the layers. In 2020, Lynch-Bages is a bit darker and more virile in feel than is typically the case. There is plenty of weight and substance, though. I can't wait to taste it from bottle. My impression is that the 2020 will be a very long-lived wine. Drink 2025 - 2050

  • Wine Advocate, May 2021, Score: 94-96

The 2020 Lynch-Bages is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, aging for around 18 months in French oak barriques, 75% new. It has an alcohol of 13.41%, a pH of 3.73 and an IPT (tannin index) of 93. Opaque purple-black in color, it leaps from the glass with notes of crushed blackberries, cassis and boysenberries, plus touches of garrigue, red roses and cedar chest with hints of graphite and black olives. The medium-bodied palate has a rock-solid frame of ripe, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness supporting the tight-knit black fruit and earthy flavors, finishing long and mineral laced. Drink 2027-2050

  • Decanter, May 2021, Score: 96

The lowest amount of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend on recent record but the signature of Lynch Bages is very much in play here - tons of liquorice, grippy and charismatic cassis and blueberry fruit with a velvety texture layered with blackcurrant pastilles and rich dark chocolate. This is easily one of the best Pauillacs that I have tasted in the vintage, totally gorgeous. The 33hl/ha yield meant I was worried that it would be too concentrated, but it pulls it off, although you've got to assume that they will need to be careful over ageing. Lower alcohol than both 2018 and 2019, a more classical balance in fact. 4% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 3.73pH, 75% new oak, 18 months in barrel. Drink 2030-2048.

  • Matthew Jukes, May 2021, Score: 17.5++

This is a monster of a wine in terms of the oak and the power and while it is not a big, ripe or juicy number, it still sports layers and layers of tannin and accompanying oak and this makes it a very difficult wine to taste. I can see that the fruit is huge, too, but it teeters on the precipice of unripeness and I worry that there is not quite enough generosity of flesh to achieve true balance in time. You will have to wait twenty years to find out.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2021, Score: 17++

Very deep, dense blackish purple. Suave, flattering nose with good freshness and precision. Marked tannins underneath (more so than its stablemate Haut-Batailley). This is less the old, spicy, comfortable pair of slippers Lynch-Bages and seems to be heading in a deliberately purer, 'cooler' direction. Impressive undertow and persistence, but with interesting top notes such as tobacco leaf. Very ambitiously dry on the finish. 13.4%. Drink 2031 – 2049

  • Jeb Dunnuck, May 2021, Score: 95-97+

Ultra-classic notes of blackcurrants, freshly sharpened lead pencil, damp earth, and crushed stone emerge from the 2020 Château Lynch-Bages, which checks in as 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, all hitting 13.4% natural alcohol and a pH of 3.73 and a massive IPT of 93, which might be the highest in the vintage. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it has brilliant purity of fruit, a layered, building sense of structure, and a great finish. While not austere or closed, this serious Lynch-Bages will need 10-15 years of bottle age to hit maturity and have 40-50 years of overall longevity.

  • Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021, Score: 95-97

The first vintage made in their brand new, state-of-the-art cellars is deep garnet in color. The wine rapidly opens with notes of Cuban cigars, cedar, creme de cassis, flowers and forest leaf aromas. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, soft, round and fresh. The elegant tannins allows the wine to gently unfurl, revealing its sweet red currants, kirsch liqueur and creamy textured, rich finish. This refined styled vintage of Lynch Bages blends 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, 13.4% ABV. The yields were only 33 hectoliters per hectare.

The 2020 Pontet Canet, picked from 14 to 30 September, has a well-defined bouquet with scents of black cherries, raspberry, crushed iris and violet. This is demonstrating more delineation than the 2018 that was tasted just a couple of days previously. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a spicy entry, a liberal sprinkling of black pepper and a hint of cedar. Fine structure and focus here. It is fresh with a touch of pencil lead towards the finish, and a touch of pepper lingering on the aftertaste. Here, I can taste Pauillac DNA, which has been my pet peeve in recent vintages. I look forward to revisiting this in bottle. Tasted at the estate with Alfred and Justine Tesseron.

The 2020 Pontet-Canet is captivating effort from the Tesseron family. The intensely perfumed, savory bouquet is immediately alluring. Deep and substantial, the 2020 is luxuriously rich from start to finish. Swaths of incisive tannin wrap around a core of dark red cherry fruit, gravel, dried herbs and rose petal, and a whole range of floral and savory accents lend aromatic presence. The Pontet-Canet is often a charmer en primeur, but the 2020 comes across as quite serious. I can't wait to see how it develops. As always, one of the signatures of Pontet-Canet is a high proportion of Merlot vis-à-vis its peers among top Left Bank châteaux that lends tremendous midpalate weight. In 2020 production is within historical norms. Mildew pressure was high, but not as severe as in 2018, when two-thirds of the crop was lost in a single day. Harvest took place September 14–30, a bit more of a compact time frame than normal, and a good 7–10 days earlier than is typically the case. Opaque purple-black in color, it needs significant aeration and swirling to coax out evocative notes of black cherry preserves, raspberry pie, blackcurrant pastilles and damp soil, before launching into gorgeous floral and spice notions of red roses, cinnamon stick, star anise and cardamom, with a waft of crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate reveals a lot of depth and polish, delivering mouth-coating red and black fruits with loads of fragrant earth and floral sparks, framed by velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral tinged. This is a singular, fascinating expression of the vintage and highly recommended!

  • Decanter, May 2021, Score: 97

Highly successful Pontet, one of the few Pauillacs that, for me, overperforms on its 2019. Inky purple with ruby reflections in colour. Lots of firm but upright tannins, a good dollop of graphite, pencil lead and cassis bud, there is depth through the mid palate shot through with wild blackberry, hawthorn, sage, rosemary and wild mint. It has personality, and is a little old school in the best possible way. Recommended. They have avoided the over-concentrated feel of some Pauillacs in the vintage, while remaining true to the appellation. 4% Petit Verdot completes the blend, 50% new oak 35% amphoras, 15% one-year barrels. First full vintage for Mathieu Bessonnet who replaced the previous long-term director Jean-Michel Comme in 2020. 100% first wine, as it has been for the past four years. 45% will be aged in new oak barrels, 15% one year, 40% in amphoras. The mildew pressure was stressful in the early part of the year, but they had learnt from 2018, and brought in the manpower to get around the whole vineyard in a (very long) day, so their yields ended up being close to normal. It does, however, unfold to dark cherry, redcurrant, grilled herb, iron ore and candied orange peel. You need to give your glass a few extra vigorous swirls. Supremely stylish and one of the most exciting wines of the vintage; this is an absolute beauty, highlighting this famous property’s sublime location and ability to produce one of the world’s finest Merlot/Cabernet Franc blends. A wine of extraordinary balance, concentrating on elegance and finesse. Some critics may underestimate its sheer class as it isn’t a blockbuster, but it is extraordinarily layered with immense complexity and charm.

  • Neal Martin, April 2015, Score: 95-97

The Vieux Château Certan 2014 is a blend of 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Franc, picked in three stages: 19-20 September, 29 September to 2 October and 7 and 8 October. The yields came in at 38.7 hectoliters per hectare with 13.4% alcohol. Noticeably deep and clear in color, the nose takes time to “rev up” but stick with it because it eventually reveals exquisite pure blackberry and briary scents. It is not a powerful set of aromatics but they are so finely tuned and pretty. The palate is one of the best you will find this vintage: very precise and focused, here the intensity delivered by that Cabernet Franc, complex and cerebral like the best VCC’s. Truffle, blackberry, woodland aromas waft temptingly from the glass and there is the perfect balance of sweetness and reserve to beg another sip. Alexandre and his son, Guillaume Thienpont may have overseen the best wine of the vintage.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2015, Score: 93-96+

One of the highlights of the vintage, the Vieux Château Certan is a wine of total finesse. Sweet floral notes meld into a core of blue and purplish-hued stone fruits. The tannins are present, but they are noble and barely perceptible. With time in the glass, the floral/savory notes become even more expressive, but it is the wine's textural elegance that truly elevates it. The 2014 finished with bracing freshness and palpable sense of energy. Readers who can find the 2014 should not hesitate, as it is truly superb.

  • James Suckling, March 2015, Score: 95-96

There’s a purity of fruit in this wine that shows the soil and uniqueness with wet earth, tobacco, mushroom and red fruits. Full and silky with fine tannins and a fresh finish. The 20% cabernet franc makes this wine great. It’s like a wonderfully cut ruby.

  • Decanter, April 2015, Score: 95

Classic blend of 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet. Real personality. Elegant, perfumed nose with blueberry, violet and chocolate notes. Refined tannins provide a velvety texture as well as persistence and length. Lovely fruit, fine structure. Vibrant, fresh finish. Drink: 2022-2040

  • Matthew Jukes, May 2015, Score: 18.5+

(80 Merlot, 19 Cabernet Franc, 1 Cabernet Sauvignon) | 13.4% alc. | 63 IPT. Guillaume Thienpont, in spite of his youth, is turning into the consummate winemaker / raconteur. His descriptions of the weather and the challenges ought to be filmed and distributed as the standard learning tool for those people who want to understand the trials and tribulations of the Bordeaux vigneron. His description of this year’s wines as ‘cool climate with tension’ sums up the entire vintage succinctly and accurately. After an anxious August, which could have given them worse wines than 2013, it all turned around and the ‘miracle’ happened. Along the way they experienced botrytis on green berries(!) and even a vinegar fly called Drosophila Suzukii (which we nicknamed the ninja) which doesn’t wait until there is a wound in a grape to exploit the sugar inside or lay eggs, it actually slices its way in with a sawlike ovipositor! Anyway, these need to be dealt with by dropping fruit immediately. They had one block affected by this pest. They also practised judicious de-leafing on the morning sun side initially to help with ripening and air-flow and then turned this practice around and de-leafed on the afternoon side one week before harvest to assist phenolic development. Concerned about when to pick, as there was some humidity from water in the soil, they literally watched the conditions day by day, needing a clear five-daywindow to bring the fruit in in optimum conditions. They managed to nail it, of course, and the result is a precise, driven and very direct wine with a graphite shaft of purity running its length and gorgeous violet-scented fruit. Guillaume described the Cabernet Franc component as ‘dentelle’ (lacy) and with punchy acidity, which was slightly higher than usual giving a fresh crunch on the finish, this wine is packed with drama. The momentum on the palate doesn’t divert from its mission to thrill and enliven the taste buds. This is a precision-made, ultra-fine wine with great length and perfectly controlled oak. It is one of a handful of elite wines on the Right Bank in 2014.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2015, Score: 18.5

Dark crimson. Lighter nose than some vintages. Very fruity with a rich undertow that almost disguises the tannins. Definitely a lighter wine than usual. Sinewy and sort of aggressively Moueix style! It may take on flesh and may just be a dark horse. The spread on the finish is very impressive. A bit green and sinewy. Drink 2024-2040

  • Tim Atkin, May 201595

“Very happy given what it could have been,” is owner Alexandre Thienpont’s modest comment on his own wine. Silky, refined and elegant, this is fresh and very aromatic, with fine tannins that build on the palate. Very Pomerol, but above all very VCC, it’s grassy, complex and well balanced. Drink: 2020-32

  • Wine Spectator, March 2015, Score: 94-97

Reserved in terms of aroma, but shows beautiful mouthfeel and depth, with pure cassis, blueberry and plum fruit that glides along, laced with a lively tobacco leaf note and backed by a sanguine twinge. Ample singed vanilla and alder accents chime in as well, but they stay in the background while the fruit plays out. Tasted non-blind.

Cherry, bright berry and cassis emerge from the Bruno Giacosa 2020 Nebbiolo d'Alba Vigna Valmaggiore. This is a somewhat looser, more open-knit approach to Nebbiolo that offers a delightful, fruit-forward mouthfeel that is characterized by moments of delicate softness and, alternatively, bright freshness. Blue flowers and violets appear on the close. Drink 2023-2032

Tasted at the “Rewards of Patience” vertical in Berlin. The 2007 is more “Barossa” than the 2006 on the nose, with more overt eucalyptus aromas that leap from the glass alongside over-ripe Satsuma, apricot and a touch of honey. It is well defined and pure. The palate is rich and open with generous, fleshy fruit: macerated dark cherries, vanilla, boysenberry and tobacco. It is very primal with good weight, the finish muscular and spicy with a very long tail that is missing a little tension and poise at the moment. Drink now-2023.

Aux Boudots is one of the finest sites in Nuits St Georges. It mirrors many of the traits found in neighbouring Vosne Romanée 1er Cru, Aux Malconsorts. A firm muscular structure on a deep, dark fruit backdrop. In 2020, this wine shows how aged and young vines can combine to create a wine of perfect integration. It reflects the depth and powerful concentration of 90-year vines, redolent with spice, mocha and wild savoury dark fruits, and blends beautifully the high-toned energy of the young vines. Vibrant and full of life.

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Boudots 1er Cru has the best aromatics among Grivot’s Nuits Saint-Georges with very well defined red berry fruit, briary and light sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, slightly savory on the entry, fresh and saline on the finish. This has real verve and class, though it will benefit from time in bottle. Drink 2026 - 2050

  • Burghound, January 2022, Score: 89-92

An extremely ripe nose lacks the same freshness as the best in the range though importantly, there are no notes of port-like nuances on the black cherry and spice aromas. The dense, powerful and very serious medium weight plus flavors possess excellent mid-palate density while exhibiting fine length on the long if slightly warm finale. This is a big Boudots that may better harmonize with time in bottle. Drink 2035+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18+

With a lovely classical stance and some Boudots fleshiness, too, this is a rather lovely wine, and it certainly has the ingredients to age well. The price is getting fairly steep, and I imagine that only true Grivot devotees will be excited about putting their names down for this and the following wines.

  • Jasper Morris MW, Janaury 2022, Score: 93-95

Dense rich black purple. The nose is very heady but Boudots can carry it. Black cherry but there are nuances here, not just power. A wonderful depth, length and breadth to this, brilliantly energetic fruit, tannins just in the right place, refreshing mineral acidity. Finishes on black fruit with a touch of liquorice but wafts of redder notes are never far away.

A profoundly powerful Grand Cru with flamboyant fruit compote aromas and additional scents of blueberry and violet. While the fruit flavours have great clarity and purity, this is a wine with an undercurrent of muscle and structure. The tannins are textured and create a deep core over which the palate evolves to show wild savoury tones. Plenty of power and a long life ahead of it.

The vineyards of Romanée St Vivant always retain moisture well, which is an added advantage to the quality of this fine terroir in drier years such as 2020. Radiant purple colour, a nose of blackberry crumble, liquorice and spicy oak. An appealing combination between luscious plump dark berry fruits and bright racy freshness. The tannins show a very fine almost lace-like texture and the finish is poised and long.

Whilst it may not have all the finesse of its famous neighbours, it more than compensates with its power and Grand Cru-like intensity. Claude describes their Fournaux as a “super village cuvée”. They have combined their 1er Cru parcel (2/3rds of the blend) with their village plot of Fournaux because of the small crop this vintage. Unsurprisingly, this punches well above its weight. With sweet fresh strawberry on the palate, this is graceful and harmonious. The tannins are subtle and the finish is packed with bright, precise red fruits. A very lovely style.

The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Fournaux, is a blend of one plot 2.10ha that includes both Premier and Village Cru (it was previously bottled separately.) Juicy red fruit on the nose with touches of orange blossom, this just needs a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly powdery tannins, quite austere for the vintage but with decent length. Drink 2023 - 2033

  • Burghound, April 2022, Score: 90-92

An ultra-fresh nose features notes of both red and dark currant that enjoy pretty top notes of violet and rose petal plus a touch of earth. There is excellent precision to the super-sleek and precise middle weight flavors that terminate in a balanced finale that is less rustic than usual and with only a touch of rusticity. This offers especially good quality for its level and is recommended. Drink 2027+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 90-93

Two thirds premier cru, one third village, both planted in 1956, with massal selection from Domaine Tollot-Beaut. Young vines are kept out of the blend for the moment. Lovely royal purple with a fabulous nose, almost still vinification aromas. Very sensual at the same time, cream of cherry, with a slightly stricter feel at the back, as the tannins kick in. But there is a velvet grace throughout.

Mitans derives from the old French word for middle or centre, aptly for this cru which lies at the foot of the slope just beneath the village, directly in the heart of the appellation. The soil here is fine clay creating a very composed wine. Plenty of earthy, wild bramble fruits. It is deeply structured, with a chewy mouthfeel and will age extremely well.

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 17.5

I like this, and it seems that Ben’s affinity with Volnay continues with this lovely vintage. Floral, layered and classy, this is a more expensive wine, but it is justified with a millefeuille of red and black fruit and a tender texture.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 88-91

Aux Brûlées puts on further darker notes afterwards with a touch of coffee but then the gorgeous noble fruit takes over and this is underpinned by a limestone freshness. Really fine energy to finish.
