En Primeur | Burghound Recommends

Although the field of serious Burgundy critics is becoming ever more crowded, Allen Meadows (Burghound) still stands out as the original and the best. So, when he releases his review of a new vintage it is worth sitting up and taking notice. He is positively rapturous, commenting that the 2019 wines are: “Ripe, fresh, concentrated and very high-quality.” If you have not yet dipped a toe in the fabulous Burgundy 2019 pool, now is the moment.

A wine which heads towards perfection. The aromas are beautifully scented with sweet ripe summer fruits. It is gloriously elegant with a slow build-up of power and flavours, reaching a crescendo of exquisite harmony. The finish is sensational, balancing delicious fruit flavours, refinement and elegance underpinned by a deep-rooted power. A truly great wine.

Here too a moderate wood influence frames the ripe, pure and cool aromas of plum, violets and spicy Asian-style tea. The equally pure broad-shouldered flavors ooze a fine minerality on the energetic and powerful finish that does a slow build from the mid-palate to the explosive finale. I very much like the underlying sense of tension and this is a classically styled Richebourg that is built-to-age yet not quite so structured as to preclude opening a bottle after only 6 to 8 years. Reminding me of the 1992 and a resounding success in the vintage, The 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Celestins is a seamless, elegant and beautifully complex effort that’s worth seeking out. Offering up notions of sandalwood, sweet cherries, pepper and exotic spice, it is medium-bodied, elegant and silky on the palate. Finesse-driven, with terrific complexity and nuance, this beauty is already accessible and a joy to drink. Enjoy it over the coming decade or more.

Deep ruby. High-pitched aromas of red berry liqueur, cherry pit, lavender and allspice, with a zesty mineral nuance adding vivacity. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering vibrant black raspberry and floral pastille flavors that become richer and spicier with aeration. Silky tannins give shape to the strikingly persistent finish, which features sappy dark berry and fruitcake qualities.

Dark, ripe cassis fruits dominate the nose, with complex notes of spice intermingled with wild herbs. Magnificent, ripe, blackberry fruit flavours are supported by firm yet incredibly smooth, rich tannins which gives this full bodied, yet elegant wine, an aristocratic quality. Intensely rich and harmonious, it is surprisingly expressive given its youth but there is no doubt that this wine has the potential to age for twenty years or more.

Silky and inviting, with soft contours and seemingly endless layers of dark red-fleshed fruit, the 2007 is absolutely delicious today.

The 2005 Duemani (Cabernet Franc) is equally impressive. It reveals gorgeous, expressive varietal notes in its chocolate, wild herbs, dark cherries, licorice and sweet toasted oak. It is an intense, full-bodied wine, yet it offers superb harmony and well-integrated tannins to round out the finish. Duemani was fermented in oak vats and aged in French oak, 60% of which were new.

The 2005 Suisassi (Syrah) was fermented and aged entirely in 225-liter French oak barrels (70% new), which D'Attoma likes to use for Syrah to give the wine more oxygen during fermentation which he believes softens the texture, sweetens the tannins and reduces the gamey qualities the variety can sometimes yield. This full-bodied, ample Syrah reveals enticing aromas and flavors of roasted coffee beans, spices, plums, earthiness, game and minerals with notable complexity and structure. It is a beautiful, elegant wine made all the more notable by the difficult vintage. In short, this is a terrific effort from Duemani.

The 2007 Suisassi is Syrah fermented in open-top French oak barrels, a labor intensive approach D'Attoma has employed for years to give Syrah oxygen during fermentation. The Suisassi is a powerful, brooding wine loaded with dark fruit, licorice, tar and smoke. With time in the glass subtle hints of earthiness emerge, adding complexity. This shows marvelous integrity of fruit along with exceptional overall balance. It is a wonderful effort from Duemani.

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Silvio Nardi is dark and earthy with a bit of a rustic edge that I find quite attractive. Floral undergrowth and rich soil tones give way to crushed black cherries with hints of brown spice. There’s a combination of ripe primary fruit and zesty acids, which creates an appealing and juicy expression, even as grippy tannins slowly mount toward the close. Remnants of licorice, mocha and tobacco linger, along with the slightest hint of heat, which doesn’t get in the way. The 2016 Tenute Silvio Nardi won’t require more than a few years of cellaring to show its best. Drink 2024-2030.

  • Neal Martin, June 2021, Score: 92

The 2004 Haut-Bailly is a vintage where I feel that the estate went up a gear. It is noticeably deep in colour. Now, this has much more vigour and clarity on the nose compared to the 2003, with blackberry, briary, cedar and mint. Great focus and energy here. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, well judged acidity, lightly spiced black fruit with a marine element that I have not noticed in prior vintage. There is commendable depth and concentration on the finish - this is worth seeking out. The decade's dark horse? Tasted at the Haut-Bailly vertical at the château. 2021-2040

  • Robert Parker, June 2007, Score: 93

The 2004 Haut-Bailly is a candidate for the finest wine of the appellation. Its dark ruby/purple color is accompanied by classic aromas of scorched earth, sweet black currants, cherries, and a hint of pain grille. Light on its feet, but substantially flavored, it possesses stunning purity, good acidity, ripe tannin, and abundant flavor as well as length. It builds incrementally and subtly in the mouth, but it's the real deal. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2024.

  • Robert Parker, June 2006, Score: 91-93

This is an estate to watch now that American banking kingpin, Robert Wilmers, has turned loose a brilliant team that includes the “retired” Jean-Bernard Delmas of Haut-Brion as a consultant. One of the finest Haut-Baillys produced in many years, the 2004 is a wine of great class, nobility, and pedigree. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by subtle scents of smoky oak, sweet raspberries and kirsch. It possesses medium body, impressive precision, a beautiful texture, a gracious mouthfeel, no hard edges, and a long, subtle finish. A brilliant effort for the vintage. Drink 2009-2020 A superb success, the 2004 exhibits exceptional concentration, elegance, and an almost surreal finesse-infused character along with firm tannin, sweet, concentrated red currant, black currant, and cherry fruit, and subtle notes of spicy new oak. Displaying fresh acidity as well as remarkable intensity and persistence in the mouth, and medium-bodied, concentrated flavors, it should reach full maturity in 5-7 years, and last for two decades or more. Drink 2011-2026

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2005, Score: 17.5

The palate is medium-bodied with a velvety texture, a silver bead of acidity, veins of blood orange struck through the red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit, the openness on the finish belying the structure underneath. This is just superb.

  • Burghound, January 2017, Score: 89-92

This is cooler and slightly more aromatically restrained with its airy combination of essence of plum, purple fruit, violet and anise nuances. There is less richness but more refinement to the attractively detailed medium-bodied flavors that possess good mid-palate fat that buffers the dusty and moderately firm tannic spine. This is also a seductive Chambolle but slightly finer. (89-92)/2022+

A product of 85-plus-year-old vines in Castiglione Falletto, the Azelia 2017 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is subdued and delicate, with linear fruit of wild plum and blackberry, plus hints of blue flower and pressed violet. The age of the vines and the depth of the root system in the loose soils of this site have helped to maintain balance and freshness during the hottest moments of this vintage. Indeed, this wine is more immediately silky in texture compared to Azelia's wines from Serralunga d'Alba. This release of 5,600 bottles presents a nice opportunity to try your hand at a delicate rabbit ravioli for a very special occasion a few years from now.

The 2017 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is bright and effusive from the very first taste. Crushed flowers, red berry fruit, orange peel, spice and mint all grace this nervy, mid-weight Barolo. Medium in body and translucent, the 2017 has quite a bit to offer. It is an especially savory, linear Barolo.

  • Decanter, March 2021, Score: 94

Located in Castiglione Falletto, Bricco Fiasco is a vineyard of old vines (85 years old) considered to be the historical selection of the estate. Fermented with indigenous yeasts for approximately 60 days with a submerged cap, it's then aged in large oak vessels for 24 months. Intense ruby in colour, it is restrained but full of layers, dominated by a bouquet of rose and violet, with fruit ranging between cranberry and dried cherry, followed by leather and earthy tones. Sucrose, fleshy and pure on the full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and refreshing acidity. The floral character is intoxicating, while the extraction is so great on the mid-palate and chalky on the finish.

  • Kerin O’Keefe, July 2021, Score: 92

Dried berry, pressed rose, star anise and botanical herb aromas slowly take shape in the glass. Elegant and austere, the firm palate features tart cherry, blood orange, licorice and tobacco alongside tightly knit, refined tannins that leave an assertive finish. It definitely needs more time to fully unwind and develop.

  • Decanter, Macrh 2021, Score: 96

Margheria is an MGA in Serralunga, where Azelia occupies the higher westerly aspect. This makes the wine more austere in comparison to examples from other producers. Bright ruby in the glass, the scents are mostly focused on violets, with rhubarb and red berry notes. The palate is vibrant and mineral, with ripe, lavish tannins and bracing acidity. The structure and the almost-tart fruit are finely tailored. Outstanding now, but built for the long haul.

  • Monica Larner, June 2021, Score: 93

The most structured and tannic of these new releases from Azelia is the 2017 Barolo Margheria. The tannins are quite present, meaning that you are required to afford generous aging time to this Barolo from Serralunga d'Alba, hoping that the fruit intensity will run the course. At this young stage, the wine shows blackberry and plum, with licorice, rusty nail and some crushed stone or terracotta clay. The wine's mineral signature is strong and elegant. In appearance, it reveals a lean and bright ruby color, and the power and natural richness of the mouthfeel come as a welcome surprise. This was a release of about 5,900 bottles.

The 2020 Chapelle d'Ausone, raised entirely in new oak, is relatively backward on the nose, just like the 2018, and demands encouragement to eke out scents of blackberry, cedar, crushed limestone and a touch of pencil shaving. Very focused, though there is something bashful about the aromatics at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied and extremely pure, with pliant tannins and a silky smooth texture. Candied orange peel infuses the black fruit towards the mineral-driven finish. The more you remain in its presence, the more you feel the quality of this Deuxième Vin. Drink 2026-2048

The 2020 Chapelle d’Ausone has a well defined, focused bouquet. Tightly-wound at first, the 2020 opens with lavender and incense aromas infusing the red berry fruit. Touches of rose petal emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins and moderate depth. A discrete white pepper note builds towards the finish that is vivacious and vibrant. The clean, mineral-drenched finish is a thing of absolute beauty. The Chapelle is a blend of young vines and barrels that don't make it into the Grand Vin. In a word: dazzling. Drink 2027-2040

The 2020 La Clotte comes from a small 4-hectare estate, rapidly becoming one of the Vauthier family's most coveted crus. This is another in the canon of outstanding recent vintages. It offers a mixture of red and black fruit, pain d'épices and crushed stone, gaining complexity with aeration while remaining very cohesive. The palate is very harmonious with finely-chiseled tannins, a seam of graphite imparted by the 15% Cabernet Franc, beautifully focused and refined towards the finish. The 2020 Cos d'Estournel, which was bottled in July, has lost some of the exoticism that it showed out of barrel. Within five minutes of aeration it develops a complex bouquet: black fruit laced with graphite and subtle cedar aromas, a charcoal back-note and later pressed iris flowers. I foresee this gaining more nuance with bottle age. The palate is taut, lean and precise. Lightly spiced on the entry, with finely-chiseled tannins, again, not quite as precocious as it showed in barrel, allowing the terroir to come through more. There is something almost understated about this vintage vis-à-vis others, razor-sharp precision with just the right amount of salinity on the finish. This is a classy offering that will mature beautifully in bottle. A keeper. Drink 2026-2060

The 2020 Cos d’Estournel is a very different proposition to the Les Pagodes, more so than in other years. Much more intense on the nose of intense black fruit, it is beautifully defined, with enticing scents of blackberry, Dorset plum and topnotes of blueberry and briar. After 30 minutes in the glass, it develops more Saint-Estèphe-like traits: freshly tilled soil, cigar box and touches of warm gravel. There is an openness to these inviting aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins (so different from the "iron girders" of yore). There is freshness and a sense of light in this Cos d’Estournel, though the backbone remains in situ on the cedar and mint finish (a nod to neighboring Pauillac, perhaps), then a lingering marine/seaweed note on the aftertaste. This is a finely crafted, very succinct Cos d’Estournel that may well be hiding something up its sleeve for after bottling, and I suspect it will gain more spine during its barrel aging. The 2020 Cos d'Estournel is a wine of extreme elegance. Silky and light on its feet, the 2020 is incredibly nuanced. In fact it is without question the most finessed of all the top wines in Saint-Estèphe, showing more in common with some of its neighbors in the north of Pauillac than the more potent wines of Saint-Estèphe. Impossibly soft, silky tannins wrap around a core of dark red fruit, spice and orange zest. The 2020 is not a huge Cos, but rather a wine for readers who appreciate elegance over power. I can't wait to see how it ages. Magnificent. Drink 2030-2060

  • Wine Advocate, May 2021, Score: 96-98

The 2020 Cos d'Estournel is composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot. The harvest took place September 10–24 with a yield of 39 hectoliters per hectare. The alcohol weighs in at 13.46% with a pH of 3.9 and an IPT (total phenolic index) of 80. It is being aged in French oak barrels, 55% new. Deep purple-black in color, it pops with explosive scents of ripe red and black currants, black cherry preserves and black raspberries, followed by sparks of violets, wild sage, pencil lead and clove oil, with emerging hints of iron ore and damp soil. The medium-bodied palate has amazing elegance and grace contrasted by jaw-dropping energy, featuring a firm frame of finely grained tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with a whole firework display of mineral nuances. I love the way this Cos d'Estournel shimmies and shines—a unique vintage signature expressed so beautifully at this estate! Drink 2028-2060

  • Decanter, May 2021, Score: 97

You need to take a little time to let the concentrated flavours seep out, this is a long hauler. The tannins build slowly but surely through the palate, sombre and serious right now, particularly for an estate that is known for its exuberance. The opulence is there if you give it time, and as the tannins elongate and relax, richer notes of bilberry fruits, toasted cedar, salted chocolate, turmeric and black pepper spice arrives. Harvest September 10 to 24. A 3.9pH is the highest since 2003, but any threat of low acidity is balanced by high tannins, and relatively low alcohol. A yield of 39hl/ha (43hl/ha in 2019). 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot. 55% new oak. 13.46% alc. 39 hl/ha. 3.90 pH. 80 IPT. When you peruse the statistics above you will notice that the standout ‘stat’ is the alcohol level – a full 1% lower than the ‘perfect’ (in my eyes) 2018 vintage. I love ‘lower alcohol’ (this should really read ‘classical alcohol’) level vintages and the Left Bank wines in 2020 seem, on the whole, to live in among the 13s and this is very exciting indeed. There is always a little more drama on the palate with keenly refreshing vintages, and especially with Cabernet-dominant wines, and while this wine is 13.5% alcohol, the tannin index still manages to register a powerful 80-score. So, before tasting, I was hoping for a fascinating and uniquely Cos-style interpretation of this challenging 2020 vintage. I am thrilled to report that this wine sings in the glass and it gives me everything and more that I was hoping for. Commanding and precise, this is a phenomenal performance with tenderness balanced by impressive timbre. With a classically dimensioned, medium-weight frame and, dare I say it, a pitch and intensity akin to an elite Barolo (by that I mean pinpoint accurate tannins and epic acidity weighted perfectly for a medium-weight, not blockbuster wine), this is a stunning wine which is midnight black in colour, but fabulously lifted and expressive on the palate. This wine’s silhouette and ethereal nature seem like it has jumped back in a time machine to the forties or fifties, its clarity of fruit is very much a wine of the modern era. Minutes after tasting this wine I still found myself marvelling at the power to weight ratio while my taste buds were still resonating from the noble Cabernet theme and exquisite freshness of the tannins which is a signature of great Cos vintages.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2021, Score: 18.5

  • Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021, Score: 97-99

Deep garnet in hue, the wine shoots from glass with tobacco leaf, currants, spice box, cigar wrapper, blackberry and cassis. Elegant, fresh and vibrant, the wine is silky, long and precise. There is a cool spicy note that rides along with all the layers of soft, polished fruits on the mid-palate and in the finish. This is a refined vintage for COS. You find lower alcohol and the wine feels more energetic on the palate and in the finish, even though the pH is high at 3.9. Let it sleep for at least a decade before popping a cork. Produced from a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot, 13.46 % ABV, the harvest took place September 10 to September 24.

Denis Durantou would be hugely proud of this lovely wine from daughter Noëmie’s first vintage in charge. Tasting together via Zoom she was particularly excited by the softness of tannins in the Merlot and the great quality of the Cabernet Franc. Rewarding and generous, scented with sloes, damsons and boysenberries. Brimming with succulent ripeness, the tannins are creamy in texture and the lift of freshness at the end completes a wine which is both confident and complex. Beautiful.

The 2020 L'Eglise-Clinet has a very intense bouquet with multi-layered red and black fruit, cedar and iron scents—complex and engaging, though there is a touch of oak still to be assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, saturated tannins. Satin-textured, seamless and very precise with an irresistible, youthful, sensual finish, this is a brilliant wine that needs a few years in bottle (if you can resist). Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

  • Neal Martin, December 2022, Score: 98

The 2020 L'Eglise-Clinet takes time to open up in the glass, so I afford it 15-20 minutes to aerate. It's definitely worth a bit of patience. It delivers exquisite, ineffably pure aromas of black fruit, pressed violet, hints of marmalade and truffle. Amazing focus and precision. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiseled tannins, crisp and taut, just a very slight creaminess in terms of texture towards the second half with a long, peppery tail on the aftertaste. This is a quite fabulous Pomerol that will give 20+ years of drinking pleasure. Noemie Durantou feels this has more depth than the 2019 and she may well be right… Drink 2029-2055

The palate has exquisite balance and a silver bead of acidity that slices through the pure black fruit with effortless ease. This is a very harmonious and focused L’Eglise-Clinet, and as always, it is not an immediately crowd-pleasing Pomerol. You have to sit with it and examine its facets, including those that require unlocking with aeration. There is wonderful salinity on the finish, and awe-inspiring persistence. All the 2020 needs is time in bottle to be fully expressive, as it is quite embryonic today. Look for this to be a brilliant Pomerol in another handful of years. Drink 2030-2060

The 2020 L'Eglise-Clinet is a towering wine. I am not sure what else to say. After having tasted hundreds of 2020s, L'Eglise-Clinet very clearly claims a stake for itself among the wines of the vintage. L'Eglise-Clinet can be a brute in its youth, but the 2020 is all finesse. Sweet red/purplish fruit, rose petal, blood orange and pomegranate are some of the nuances that emerge over time. Perhaps keeping the temperatures a bit cooler in fermentation explains the extraordinary finesse here. The 2020 simply can't be denied. Drink 2035 - 2060

Displaying and opaque purple-black color, it needs a bit of swirling to reveal a fascinating array of earthy notes—black truffles, charcoal, mossy tree bark and fallen leaves—over a profound core of preserved plums, blackberry preserves and violets, with a waft of tapenade. The medium to full-bodied palate has exquisitely ripe tannins and bold freshness supporting the seductively ripe, black fruit layers, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note. Drink 2028-2068

  • Decanter, May 2021, Score: 96

Noémie Durantou has taken over from her late father Denis with this vintage, and has produced a L'Eglise Clinet that is dark ruby in colour, and needs time in the glass as it is built and muscular. You need a little patience for the cassis, bilberry and raspberry fruits to arrange, enjoy instead the silky, velvety texture that stops the tannins being too restrictive and allows the palate to slowly expand. Not as expressive as in some vintages, but still exudes quiet confidence. A yield of 42hl/ha. Harvest from September 8. Drink 2029-2050

  • Matthew Jukes, May 2021, Score: 18.5

Gosh, this is a gentlemanly creation. This wine can often be very densely packed and powerful on the nose and palate, but in 2020 it is the height of civility and elegance. The perfume is sensational with effortless beauty, wild flowers, hedgerow notes and exotic musk. The palate is honed and pure with beautiful length and there is not one molecule out of place. This is a terrific L’Eglise Clinet and it is one of the most approachable and melodic vintages in recent times.

  • Jancis Robinson, May 2021, Score: 17.5+

  • Jeb Dunnuck, May 2021, Score: 96-98

Always up with the crème de la crème of the vintage, the 2020 Château L'Eglise Clinet is no exception. It boasts a rich, powerful, opulent style that packs loads of ripe black cherries as well as notes of chocolate, earth, tobacco, and graphite. Possessing the pure, elegant, more focused style of the vintage, it still has plenty of mid-palate depth, gorgeous tannins, and one heck of a great finish. This beauty is a thrill a minute and will not hit maturity for another 7-8 years, but it will be a 20-year wine.

  • Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021, Score: 98-100

Everything you would expect from L'Eglise Clinet is here in spades. The nose shoots from the glass with its truffle, spicy plum, wet earth, herb, smoke, tobacco, cocoa and cherry liqueur scents. Full-bodied, concentrated, focused and fresh, the wine perches on the border between opulence and classic. From a blend that mirrors the vineyard at 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the wine packs layers of dark chocolate covered ripe plums that coat your palate, linger and expand. This will age gracefully for 3 decades easily. It is great to see so much continuity here from the Durantou family.

The 2020 Figeac has a very refined nose with a sense of control and brooding intensity as the black and red fruit gradually unfurl. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid entry, wonderful mineralité and firm grip—a more structured Right Bank. The finish is quite compelling, but this clearly needs time. Closing with enormous length, this is a serious 2020 for the most patient. A stunning Figeac from tip to toe. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

  • Neal Martin, December 2022, Score: 97

The 2020 Figeac was bottled in mid-July. It has an exquisite bouquet that unfolds effortlessly in the glass with blackberry, crushed stone, graphite and fresh fig scents. It blossoms with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly edgy tannins on the entry that frame the pure black fruit. It's very harmonious and silky smooth in texture that almost disguises what Frédéric Faye terms the "verticality" of the wine. Fresh and saline on the finish with just a light black pepper touch on the aftertaste. An absolute treat. Drink 2030-2065

  • Neal Martin, May 2021, Score: 96

The 2020 Figeac was picked from September 4 to October 1 and underwent vinification free of SO2. Deep purple in color, it is initially backward and sultry on the nose, necessitating 60 minutes before it really opens. It then reveals intense scents of cranberry, raspberry and touches of cassis intermingling with white pepper. Given that the Cabernets comprise 63% of the blend, this has a typical Left Bank personality but with Right Bank precocity. The palate conveys a sense of vibrancy and vigor on the entry, a dash of black pepper and allspice mingling with the mélange of red and black fruit. The tannins are satin-like in texture, and there’s dark berry fruit and hints of pencil lead and black truffle shavings toward the Pomerol-like finish. This is a magnificent Figeac from head winemaker Frédéric Faye and his team. This sample really came into its own 2–3 hours after opening. Drink 2030 - 2065

The 2020 Figeac is incredibly polished and refined. Bright saline underpinnings and lively acids shape the 2020 beautifully, lending notable energy throughout. This is the last vintage made in the transitional cellar before the new winery became operational with the 2021 vintage. My only question mark is a slightly gritty quality in the tannins that lurks beneath. There's terrific purity and drive, though. Figeac is a wine of saline tension and energy more than size. The 2020 will need a number of years in bottle to be at its best. Drink 2030-2060

  • Antonio Galloni, June 2021, Score: 95-97

A super-classic wine, the 2020 Figeac sizzles with vertical energy. The chateau has made a number of tremendous wines in recent vintages, but I don't remember a Figeac with this much saline-drenched intensity and mineral drive. The 2020 is superb, but it won't be ready to drink anytime soon. The mixture of soil types and varieties, with the high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, that is such a signature here, was a huge help in maintaining balance and energy in the wine. Technical Director Frédéric Faye certainly seems to have gotten the most out of the vintage. Drink 2035 - 2060

The 2020 Figeac is a blend of 37% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, weighing in with an alcohol of 13.9% and a pH of 3.7. Opaque purple-black colored, it bursts from the glass with a beautifully vibrant initial wave of pure, pristine black fruits: fresh black cherries, juicy black plums and ripe blackcurrants. With swirling, a whole array of floral and spice notes is unleashed: lavender, ground cloves, cumin seed, cardamom and rose oil. The medium-bodied palate is surprisingly graceful for the intensity of aromas, featuring ethereal, perfumed black berry notes, framed by a seamless line of freshness and ripe, grainy tannins, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note. Far more cerebral and quietly introspective than it is hedonic, this could only be Figeac. Drink 2027-2057.

  • Decanter, May 2021, Score: 96

This delivers concentration and intensity, a ton of black fruits, definitely Cabernet dominant in terms of fruit, and its slightly serious character, with a whoosh of juice on the finish. An extremely elegant and controlled wine, with savoury bilberry and loganberry, then peony and tobacco leaf as it opens. Tannins are finely layered but there are a lot of them. Not an exuberant Figeac, but this is rarely a wine that rushes out to seduce, it takes its time and has ageing potential in spades. The gravel soils in the drought of the summer meant the grapes slowed their ripening process, although only the youngest vines suffered blockages, and that combined with the high Cabernet content of Figeac means lower alcohols than the past few years, giving a classic balance and a feeling of effortless success. 75% of the production went into the first wine. Harvest September 4 to October 1, a full five weeks. Their final yield here was around 37hl/ha, (higher than in 2019 at Figeac, which was 34hl/ha). As with on the Left Bank, the Cabernet Sauvignons were the lowest yield (30hl/ha), with tiny berries so had to be careful with the extraction. First vintage in the new cellars. Drink 2029-2046 (JA)

  • Matthew Jukes, May 2021, Score: 19+

2020 Figeac is a tour de force. Every possible variable is considered at this historic estate and the results of the painstaking work, coupled with the innate skill and experience of the team, is evident in this wine. They employed horses to plough during the heavy rains at the beginning of the year rather than tractors, which would have struggled while also compacting the soil unnecessarily. Conversely in the summer, they ploughed their cover crops in extremely gently, so as not to kick up dust. They used judicious green harvesting on younger plots while keeping an extremely close eye on each of their three varieties because they are all essential to make Figeac its own unique proposition. While this is essentially a gravelly estate, with 4-5m depth in most areas, the blue clay beneath this layer of gravel ensured that there was no undue stress on the vines during the hot summer. A touch of rain at the beginning of September completed the picture and they harvested at a leisurely pace over four weeks. Freshness in early picks of Merlot was balanced when the older vines came in and bolstered these notes with extra levels of texture and tannins. Cabernet Franc was on stunning form in 2020 making up spiciness and glorious aromatic notes of violets and exotic tea leaves. The Cabernet Sauvignon berries were tiny in 2020 and so extra gentle handling was needed to extract the luxurious fruit notes but no astringency to upset the hard work that the viti-team put in over this testing year. Figeac works very closely with their coopers to build bespoke woodwork for this estate and Frédéric Faye told me that they have a 35-page instruction document for their barrel-makers so that they are guaranteed the very finest and most suitable barrels imaginable. The sample I tasted was a ‘finished wine’ with 7% press wine already added and so it was possible for me to see deep into its soul allowing me to fully appreciate the incredible tri-varietal balance achieved here. This is a highly sophisticated Right Bank wine with hints of Left Bank grandeur and discipline and it is, most definitely, a style of its own. The Cabernets seem to sandwich the Merlot with Franc providing the aroma, Merlot the heart and Cabernet Sauvignon the impeccable finish. This is an astoundingly serious wine with so much detail coupled to so much delicacy and restraint it is incredible. I find the tannins unique at Figeac, and in 2020, they have never been fitter, nor more resplendent and they will power this wine for decades to come. While I have not as much experience of this Chateau as I would like, I can definitely say that this is the finest Figeac I have tasted and it has a spectacular future ahead of it.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2021, Score: 17.5+

Gentle, juicy and pure with nothing overdone. Merlot provides the broad-brush sweetness on attack, the Cabernet the fresh, minerally notes on the finish. Fine grain of tannin and aromatic complexity on the nose and palate; the finesse is there. (JL) Drink 2028 – 2045

  • Jeb Dunnuck, May 2021, Score: 96-98

I loved the 2020 Chateau Figeac, and this beauty offers everything you could want from this site, revealing a dense purple/ruby color to go with gorgeous notes of cassis, tobacco, sappy herbs, and spring flowers as well as an almost Pauillac lead pencil note that develops with time in the glass. A blend of 37% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc, and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, it's full-bodied and has perfect balance, ultra-fine tannins, and a great, great finish. It brings ample power yet has a weightless elegance and riveting precision reminiscent of the 2016. Don't miss it.

  • Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021, Score: 97-99

Roses, tobacco leaf, oak, black raspberries, spice, black currants and plum aromas are all over the place. Incredibly silky on the palate, the wine is fresh and focused on its purity and precision. Elegant, gentle and refined, the sweet, ripe cherries come in waves, building in length and intensity from the mid-palate through the finish, which lasts almost 50 seconds. The wine is effortless to drink. This should age and evolve for decades. The wine blends 37% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13.9% ABV, 3.7 pH. Picking took place September 4, October1, making it one of the longest harvests in the history of the estate.

53.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 8.5% Cabernet Franc This lovely Langoa has very appealing aromatics: herbal notes, some mulberry and tayberry, and a little oaked smokiness. Quite a bold style, the anticipated fruit flavours are a little muted on the palate, due to the great depth and noticeable structure. With excellent concentration, this has the sensation of a coiled spring holding back a part of its personality but bursting to get out. The gentle freshness at the end opens up the wine highlighting sweet flavours of coconut, dark chocolate and Morello cherry.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 95

The 2020 Langoa Barton has a wonderful, precise, mineral-driven bouquet with subtle marine scents (oyster shell and Crustacea) that emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins. Stylistically, it's not unlike the Léoville Barton, though this has more control and tension toward the persuasive finish. Glorious—one of the finest releases in recent years and better than the showing just after bottling. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

  • Neal Martin, May 2021, Score: 92-94

The 2020 Langoa Barton has a really gorgeous, very pure bouquet of crushed violets infusing black cherry, blueberry and black plummy scents. The new oak seems a little more pronounced compared to recent vintages and yet it is in sync with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins that disguise the structure underneath, the counterbalancing acidity line keeping everything focused and fresh. This is quite an audacious Langoa, and you what? It pulls it off. Drink 2026 - 2055

  • Antonio Galloni, June 2021, Score: 90-92

The 2020 Langoa Barton is an absolute delight. It offers the radiance of the year but in the mid-weight, understated style that is such a Langoa signature. Bright red cherry fruit, blood orange, mint, rose petal and cedar give the 2020 a whole range of bright aromas and flavors that bristle with energy. This is such a pretty wine. Drink 2026 - 2040

The medium-bodied palate is delicately played with impressive freshness delivered by the red berry and herbal sparks within a black-fruit core, with grainy tannins to support, finishing long and invigorating. • Matthew Jukes, April 2021, Score: 18+

This is a great vintage for Langoa with tremendous depth of fruit and amazing length, too. The nose is sensational and the weight is medium-plus, as opposed to full. The cassis and black cherry notes are sublime and the detail and oak integration is thrilling I went back to this wine many times and on each occasion, I found more and more fruit and spice. I cannot recommend 2020 Langoa enough.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2021, Score: 17

Healthy deep purplish crimson. High-toned, fully ripe nose that is rather seductive before a glossy, polished-tannin dry finish. Some restraint despite the initial seduction.

It has the concentrated, backward vibe of the vintage yet brings remarkable opulence and texture. It's impressive.

  • Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021, Score: 93-95

Spicy, sweet, fresh, vibrant aromas of currants, cedar, cigar box, herbs and spice meld perfectly with the powerful, ripe, long, waves of red fruits. Here you find, bite, and crispness to the fruit, a full-body with grainy tannins needing time to expand and soften. The finish, with its tobacco, red currant, cranberry and spice keeps on going. Give this a decade and it should really start to shine.

It will drink well with just short-term cellaring yet evolve gracefully for 20-30 years. I was able to taste this on multiple occasions, and it always checked in near the upper end of the scale. This is a gorgeous wine in the making.

The 2020 Pavie was picked September 21–30 at 31hl/ha and matured in 75% new oak, the rest one year old. It continues to see greater emphasis on Cabernets – 34% Franc and 16% Sauvignon, the Merlot reduced to half the blend. This gradual rejigging of the blend is borne out on the nose, which features hints of damp loamy soil and bell pepper infusing vivid blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, becoming more and more citrusy with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sautéed tannins that gently grip. Powerful, but the 14.82° alcohol is neatly disguised on the finish (at least in tasting measure) with fine delineation. Cohesive and focused. I would like to see a little more personality develop during élevage, but this remains an impressive Saint-Émilion and a Pavie with a long future ahead. Drink 2030 - 2060

  • Antonio Galloni, June 2021, Score: 97-99

The 2020 Pavie is very clearly one of the wines of the year. Rich, inky and wonderfully vibrant, it pulses with energy from start to finish. All the elements are well balanced. Soaring Cabernet Franc aromatics lead into a core of finely knit yet deep fruit in a wine that feels endless. Harvest for the reds started on September 17, paused briefly during some rain on the 25th and 26th, and then wrapped up by the end of the month. The blend is 50% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, so more Cabernets than in the past, the result of a large replanting program that began in the early 2000s. A real head-turner. Magnificent! Drink 2035 - 2060

Opaque purple-black colored, notes of plum pudding, blueberry pie and dark chocolate-covered cherries charge out of the gate, followed closely by hints of eucalyptus, star anise, unsmoked cigars and fertile loam with a hint of cedar chest. The full-bodied palate is built like a brick house, offering very firm yet wonderfully ripe, velvety tannins and seamless freshness to support the densely laden, muscular black and blue fruits, finishing very long and with loads of mineral-laced layers. As hedonic as it is cerebral this year, it is a beautiful paradox. Drink 2027-2062

  • Decanter, May 2021, Score: 97

The Cabernets dominate the blend on the aromatics, and you can really see they are moving the needle on the architecture and sculpting of this wine. A ton of concentration on the nose and upfront, but it is well balanced by damson and blackberry, and has a sense of energy, uplift and clear minerality. This shows the limestone terroir in a way that, with the best will in the world, the more concentrated style of Pavie just didn't do. There is density and glamour, with layers of black chocolate, graphite and liquorice. It is pretty disarming overall, and will age extremely well. 3.61pH. • Jeb Dunnuck, May 2021, Score: 96-98

A wine that’s going to flirt with perfection, the 2020 Château Pavie is another magical wine from the genius of Gerard Perse and is 50% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc, and 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, brought up in 75% new French oak. The style here has unquestionably shifted from the blockbuster style of the 2000, 2005, 2009, and 2010 to a more elegant, refined style today that still brings plenty of fruit yet certainly stays more focused and precise. Is the new style better? I’m not sure, and there are certainly times I miss the opulence and decadence of the old style. Nevertheless, the wines today are magical Saint-Emilion that still show a rare mix of power and elegance. The 2020 is full-bodied and beautifully concentrated on the palate, offering a mouthful of cassis, black cherry, and mulberry fruits as well as a liqueur of rocks-like minerality, leafy herbs, and truffly earth. It doesn’t lack structure and has silky, polished tannins and flawless balance. Give bottles at least 7-8 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 3+ decades.

The fruit coats your palate with layers of opulent, sensuous, salty fruits that hold on to you for at least 60 seconds. • Antonio Galloni, June 2021, Score: 88-90

The 2020 Peymouton is soft, supple and easygoing, all of which make it an excellent choice for drinking with just a few years in bottle. Silky tannins wrap around a core of black cherry, plum, espresso, leather and spice. The 2020 is not especially complex, but it is impeccably balanced and a real joy to taste. Drink 2026 - 2040

  • Matthew Jukes, May 2021, Score: 16.5+

Sauvignon Chunky and square-jawed on the palate and dark and meat-stock-like on the finish, there is a lot of bang for your buck here, but this is not the most refined of wines. The fruit is certainly ripe and the oak is nicely judged, too, so I am happy to recommend it, but please do note that the fruit is rather blunt and in need of time.

  • Jeb Dunnuck, May 2021, Score: 91-93

Lots of brambly red and black fruits as well as leafy herbs and tobacco define the bouquet of the 2020 Château Peymouton. Medium-bodied, it has a nicely concentrated, rich, yet focused mouthfeel that brings plenty of tannins. Made by the team of Jean-Pierre Moueix and from a vineyard near Château Laroque, on the eastern, cooler side of Saint-Emilion, it will need 3-5 years of bottle age and keep for 10-15.

The medium to full-bodied palate is coated with vibrant red and black fruit layers with loads of mineral accents and a soft, plush texture, finishing long and refreshing. Drink 2024-2039

54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot An aromatic wine with a combination of sweet alpine fruits and fresh young currants. This is a graceful Moulis, with a noticeable fullness of fruit. Its obvious exuberance offers huge appeal but sits perfectly alongside the stemmy wild berry fruit characters and the hint of vanilla and new oak lifts the sweetness of flavours on the finish. An eye-catching style.

  • Neal Martin, December 2022, Score: 92

The 2020 Poujeaux is a wonderful Moulis-en-Médoc and likely to offer superb value-for-money. Bright blackberry commingles with blueberry and graphite on the nose, quite intense and determined to make an impression. The palate is structured but well balanced, the silver thread of acidity running from start to finish. A little glossy in style towards the finish, that will be tempered by bottle-age which Poujeaux always needs. Don't ignore this.

  • Neal Martin, May 2021, Score: 91-93

The 2020 Poujeaux was picked from September 17 to October 2 and matured in one-third new oak. It has a broody nose initially, gradually opening to display blackberry, brine and crushed rock aromas, certainly quite mineral-driven. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins and fine grip, though the tannins are not aggressive. There is a hint of dark chocolate toward the finish, but maybe I’m seeking a little more on the aftertaste. This should gain more length during its élevage. Very fine. Drink 2025 - 2050

  • Antonio Galloni, June 2021, Score: 90-92

The 2020 Poujeaux is jam-packed with inky dark fruit, graphite, cloves, lavender, licorice and a kiss of new French oak that will almost certainly integrate during élevage. Plush, engaging and flat-out delicious, with silky, perfectly ripe tannins and superb balance, this is looking to be another superb wine from the Cuvelier family. Drink 2022 - 2040

  • James Suckling, April 2021, Score: 94-95

A dense, layered red with blackberry, tar, asphalt and spice character. Medium-to full-bodied with wonderful, polished and creamy tannins. Chewy and fine. Potentially one of the best in a long time.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2021, Score: 16+

Very dark core with purplish rim. Dark, savoury and a little bit oaky on the nose and the same character on the palate. The fruit is there at the core but there is absolutely no fruit sweetness until right at the very end, just dark and refined. Firm, slightly thick, chewy tannins. A little unyielding for now but harmonious. (JH) 13.5%. Drink 2028 – 2035

  • Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021, Score: 91-93

On the fruit side indeed, as all the sweet, ripe blackberries and cassis are starting to show their essence along with tobacco, smoke, herbs and wet earth. Round, focused and forward, with plenty of sweet, soft fruit in the finish, this is a strong vintage for Poujeaux. The wine blends 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot.

The 2020 Joanin Bécot was affected by a hailstorm in May which resulted in some Cabernet Franc being parsed out from the blend, so this year there is half the normal production. It has quite a dense and quite earthy nose, introverted black fruit mixed with potpourri and traces of orange zest, the latter becoming more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with dry, gritty tannins with a smudge of dark chocolate towards the sandy finish. It needs a little more flesh around the bones, but that should come during its barrel maturation. Drink 2025-2030

  • Decanter, May 2021, Score: 92

Full of life, with a blueberry coulis burst on the attack and raspberry leaf edging. Some austerity to the tannins, but settles in to the glass, and this should be ready to go within a year or two of bottling. A yield of 20hl/ha, low mainly from the hail at the end of May rather than the drought. They lost around 40% of the vineyard (also why less Cabernet Franc is in the blend than usual). Consultant Thomas Duclos, technical director Jean de Cornuaud. The estate is located in St-Philippe d'Aiguilhe, with a cooler terroir than Beausejour Becot, meaning harvest here was September 19th to October 9th. Drinking Window 2023 - 2036

Readers looking for a good case purchase that will provide lovely, classic drinking over the coming decade should look at the 2020 Château Joanin Bécot. Medium-bodied, beautifully fruited, and textured, with ripe tannins and a great mid-palate, it’s a no-brainer purchase.

  • Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021, Score: 92-94

The combination of fresh, savory, spiced fruits, plums, mint and cherries is great from the get-go. Medium-bodied, soft, silky and pure, with a beautiful sweetness to fruits on the mid-palate, the wine ends with gentle polished kirsch and juicy plums. The wine is made from blending 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. This is clearly a new level of quality for Joanin Becot.

Here the nose is presently sufficiently reduced as to render an evaluation difficult. More interesting are the racy, intense and transparent middle weight flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract where the latter helps to buffer the moderately austere, serious and strikingly long finale. I very much like the contrast between an almost delicate mid-palate and the bold, powerful and even muscular backend. Drink 2033+. Don't miss! Outstanding

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 91-95

Dark purple, slightly reductive nose. Then a really classy attack. This is often my favourite wine in the cellar and may well be again once the light reduction which gives a mix of blackcurrant leaf and a touch of torrefaction. Beautiful harmony otherwise and a fine long finish.

A deft touch of wood frames the spicy dark raspberry liqueur-suffused nose. This is also exceptionally rich, indeed the mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors is opulent and suave though a light touch of minerality adds a sense of lift to the lush and generous finish that also manages to avoid any sense of heaviness. That said, this isn't light on its feet. 2021+

This medium-bodied Margaux possesses wonderful sweetness, excellent concentration, impeccable balance, and admirable length. Drink 2007-2018 Although the 2004 has closed down and appears shorter than it did last year, it reveals a fragrant bouquet of red and black fruits interwoven with truffle, coffee, spice, and cherry characteristics. It is medium-bodied and elegant, but less substantial in the finish than last year. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 12-15 years. Drink 2008-2023
