En Primeur | Burghound Recommends

Although the field of serious Burgundy critics is becoming ever more crowded, Allen Meadows (Burghound) still stands out as the original and the best. So, when he releases his review of a new vintage it is worth sitting up and taking notice. He is positively rapturous, commenting that the 2019 wines are: “Ripe, fresh, concentrated and very high-quality.” If you have not yet dipped a toe in the fabulous Burgundy 2019 pool, now is the moment.

The highest of Chambolle’s 1ers Crus, sitting alongside Bonnes Mares, Fuées thrives in warmer years such as 2020. Perfumed scent of rose petal and fresh currants. Ethereal and bright, with great purity, the tannins sit quietly under the fine, graceful fruit. Everything is in complete balance, so harmonious and very long.

  • Burghound, April 2022, Score: 90-93

An exuberantly floral nose is composed by notes of plum and black raspberry coulis along with an impressive array of spice wisps. Here too the mid-palate of the big-bodied flavors is almost soft while the supporting and burly tannins are both firm and prominent on the grippy and somewhat austere finale. This too is going to require extended patience though I doubt it will ever mature into a Clos de Bèze of elegance and refinement. Drink 2035+

  • Neal Martin, January 2022, Score: (96-98)

The 2020 Richebourg Grand Cru has a refined and beautifully focused bouquet, like the Aux Brûlées, a gradual build of red fruit laced with crushed stone and wilted rose petal. The palate is very focused with finely chiselled tannins, fanning out wonderfully on the finish. Perhaps a much more elegant Richebourg than its peers, this is absolutely superb. Drink 2027-2060

  • Burghound, January 2022, Score: 94-97

A restrained, elegant and wonderfully fresh nose speaks of a beautiful array of spice and floral elements on the mix of both red and dark fruit, exotic tea and a whiff of oak toast scents. There is excellent energy to the well-detailed and powerful broad-shouldered flavors that brim with sappy dry extract that helps to buffer the markedly firm but not rigid tannic spine shaping the driving, balanced and hugely long finish. This youthfully austere and decidedly backward effort is a classic Richebourg of class and grace but also one that is very much built to repay several decades of keeping. Don't miss! Drink: 2040+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 94-98

Gorgeous balanced mid purple. The nose has the heady qualities of this great vineyard but not the possible excesses of this vintage. Gets richer in the glass. Layers of fruit here, almost too much to understand in one go. Could just use a mini ounce of extra freshness perhaps, though that could of course be the sample. Tighter structure nonetheless.

An earthier and not quite as spicy array is comprised by notes of red and dark berries with a similar plethora of pretty floral nuances. The mouthfeel of the medium weight flavors is again super-sleek thanks to the moderately fine-grained tannins supporting the firm, youthfully austere and sneaky long finale. At least some patience advised. Outstanding. Drink 2030+

  • Jasper Morris MW, Janaury 2022, Score: 90-92

Located at the junction of three villages, Claude ascribes the fruit to Savigny, some spice from Pernand, with the weight of Aloxe. Clear bright purple, racy and spicy for sure, a fine depth of fruit on the palate, a weight which covers up the stems, more liquorice in with the dark raspberry fruit, balanced with good acidity. Well done!

A wine which justifies this well positioned vineyard’s excellent reputation in Savigny. • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 88-90

The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru is well-defined on the nose with slightly earthy red berry fruit, touches of crushed stone, slightly peppery (though this is de-stemmed like all Tollot-Beaut’s cuvées.) The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit. Good density here, maybe not the most tensile of the cuvées from the Domaine this vintage, but there is decent weight on the back end. Give it a couple of years in bottle. Drink 2025 - 2038

  • Burghound, April 2022, Score: 89

A moderately fresh nose reflects notably ripe but not roasted notes of red and black currant, spice and dried floral nuances. The rich, concentrated and succulent medium-bodied flavors coat the palate while the sap buffers the dense but fine tannins shaping the mildly warm finale. This is perfectly good, if a bit atypical, but it does not appear to be at its usual distinguished level. Drink: 2027+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 17.5

With wild black fruit and so much class and depth, this is richer and yet more refined wine than the Chorey, and it is an instant classic. Do everything you can to grab a case of this wine. It is such a rewarding wine, and the price is spot on, too.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 87-90

Rich deep purple, the bouquet is less oppressive, better balanced than either Chorey. Ripe raspberry pinot, still quite massive at the finish but less exaggerated and the acidity melds in well with the fruit. Noticeably more length to the finish. 14.3% but better balanced

40% whole bunch vinification 80% new wood, and a yield of just 24 hl/ha. Dark dense purple, this is clearly one of the ripe wines though somewhat saved by the whole bunches which give greater life to the sundried cherry fruit. Very succulent through the second half of the palate, though at the limit of ripeness. The whole bunches pull out the length very nicely and it finishes well.

This great Grand Cru was a favourite of the monks of Cluny in the early days of classification. The Drouhin Laroze 1.5 hectares are particularly important. Having been planted in 1949 they are over 70 years old and produce fruit of exceptional quality and intensity, so again they de-stalked 100% in 2020. Such an exciting cuvée, bursting with violets and blueberry, a touch of fresh tobacco and cinnamon. Layers of weighted fruit are kept perfectly in place by taut tannins, with an enticing saline freshness at the end. Suave and sophisticated, nothing is missing in this wine.

The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a very elegant bouquet with Earl Grey tinged red fruit. Wonderful composure here and very focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, vibrant and fresh with a dash of black pepper towards the finish. This is superb.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 95-97

The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is composed and classy on the nose, blackberry and raspberry fruit, a touch of sous-bois and rose petal. This is magnificent! The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, perfectly judged acidity, the oak supremely well enmeshed with a tight-knit and quite persistent finish. This is well worth hunting down.

  • Burghound, January 2022, Score: 92-94

A markedly spicy and notably fresher nose freely offers up ripe aromas of cassis and black cherry coulis. The bigger yet more refined broad-shouldered flavors flash evident minerality on the compact, tightly wound and built-to-age finale. This could use better depth, but more should develop over the course of its aging curve. Drink: 2035+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18.5

Another stormer, this is a power-packed Clos de Bèze and it is a full-flavoured and full-bodied creation that still manages to retain a decent degree of poise and complexity. There is great potential here as this will inevitably be the longest-lived of the bunch!

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2021, Score: 94-96

30% whole bunch vinification, and aged in 100% new wood. Dark intense purple. This has the most interesting nose to date of the grands crus because the least lush. More volume of fruit across the palate, less lush and more juicy, with a precision too. Tannins in balance, with just a hint of phenols at the finish.

I am always a sucker for this wine, and while the price hikes up a bit here, you can certainly taste more elegance and accuracy. Floral and borderline exotic, this is a flavoursome, pure Clos de Vougeot, and it will be the most forward of these three Grands Crus.

With a medley of blackberries and chocolate cake, there is generous fruit showing off the warmth of the year, kept in check by the exemplary finesse of the vineyard. The brush of acidity on the finish keeps the palate lively and gives a wine of perfect balance.

Bright and slightly translucent cherry red. Much more obvious oak at first on the nose. Toasty sweetness. Under that, intense red and darker, spicier fruit of the Côte de Nuits. Full and fresh on the palate, with a breadth of fruit. Lots of freshness and tension here, less approachable than the Beaune wines just tasted and with fine tannic length. Amazing freshness and energy. Drink 2025-2038.

  • Decanter, November 2021, Score: 93

A smoky, rich aroma that blends black plum and fig notes, with a hint of minerality and a bit of the almost 'animal' aroma of Nuits - that slightly exotic character that adds an extra dimension. Although the wine is tannic and firm on the palate, it is far from unapproachable and should age extremely well. This half-hectare parcel that Jadot farms in the Nuits premier cru Aux Boudots belongs to Domaine Gagey. It has done a marvellous job with the fruit in 2020. Drink 2025-2040.

Bought by the Wertheimer brothers (owners of Rauzan Segla and Canon) in 2015, it is still in the early days of being restructured, but this is already showing a huge upward curve. A very fresh and pure style, with good intensity of flavours. There is a grippy tannic core and a bite of freshness. A little closed on the finish at this stage, but there is undoubtedly plenty more to come.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2019, Score: 90-93

The 2018 Berliquet represents a major stylistic shift under the guidance of Nicolas Audebert and the technical team at Canon. Plump and juicy, the 2018 offers an explosion of fruit that gives it a distinctly exuberant personality. A joyous, radiant wine, Berliquet expresses the natural radiance of the vintage in a forward, juicy style that offers tons of near and medium-term appeal. The wine's fruit and overall density are both impressive, to say the least. This is the first vintage made by the Nicolas Audebert and the technical team at Canon following Chanel's acquisition of the estate in 2017. The blend is 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc. Tasted four times.

  • Wine Advocate, April 2019, Score: 93-95+

This was really Nicolas Audebert’s first vintage at Berliquet, since the property was acquired by Chanel in the autumn of 2017. The most significant, immediate change from 2018 came from noticing that blocks of the vineyard had Merlot and Cabernet Franc interplanted. These used to be harvested together. This year the different cultivars were flagged and harvested separately so as to achieve optimal ripeness for both varieties. The 2018 Berliquet is blended of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc and has 14.5% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, it leaps from the glass with bold kirsch, blueberry compote and Black Forest cake with touches of cloves, lavender, menthol and lilacs. Medium to full-bodied and elegant, with lovely freshness lifting the densely packed blue and black fruit flavors, it has a velvety texture and long, earthy finish.

  • James Suckling, April 2019, Score: 94-95

A fine and fruity red with blueberries and blackberries and hints of walnuts. Medium to full body and ultra fine tannins that melt into the body of the wine. It’s muscular in some ways. Lots of potential. Punchy.

  • Decanter, April 2019, Score: 93

2018 is the second vintage under Canon ownership, but the first one where they were involved throughout the growing season. This wine has an austerity that's apparent from the start, but as ever with the Canon team they don't try to smother it and instead focus on the elegant but powerful blue fruits that pull you along. The power and density reflects the higher levels of clay in the soils here compared Canon, and they have produced a really stunning wine with so much potential ahead of it. It's quite different in personality from Canon, and I hope they keep them as separate properties beyond the 2022 classification, when I guess they will have the chance to put them together. A silky display of sour wild berries contrasted by candied citrus wows the senses as the 2017 plays a zesty sweet-and-sour act upon the palate. It’s long, youthfully chewy, yet still remarkably fresh, with rosy florals and tart, tart cherries giving way to chiseled tannins through the finale. This is a beautiful rendition of the 2017 vintage, one that takes the dry warmth of the year and expresses it with tremendous energy and verve. Canalicchio di Sopra began harvesting Brunello on 25 September - just one day earlier than in 2016. Francesco Ripaccioli credits the significant diurnal temperature differences during the preceding month for measured ripening as well as preservation of acidity. The estate Brunello, which is a blend of vineyards in the Montosoli and Canalicchio zones, starts with smoky, flinty notes then gives way to intense herb blossoms. The palate is where it really struts its stuff at the moment, particularly the texture. It grips confidently in all the right places. Packed with flavours of small forest berries and dusty gravel, it finishes with a refreshing salty kick. Drinking Window 2023 - 2031

Drink 2023-2030.

  • Monica Larner, February 2022, Score: 94

As you drive downhill from the hamlet of Montalcino on its north side, you pass the Canalicchio di Sopra winery, which is located in a shallow, sun-lit basin of vines. This estate is meticulous and studied in its winemaking philosophy, and the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is an expression of that concentration. This warm-climate Brunello reveals awesome purity and intensity with wild cherry, almond and lilac spread over a tonic, mid-weight finish. This wine awards plenty of elegance in a vintage that was not easy and not prone to such nuance. Drink 2024-2040.

From magnum, the exquisite bouquet of black fruit, leather and hints of game and antique bureau is fully mature yet vigorous and so joyful. Here, there is more red than black fruit, suffused with tobacco, sage and cedar notes, impressive in terms of grip and fanning out gloriously towards the finish. Bottles with sound provenance are à point and will continue to give pleasure for another 20, perhaps 30 years. Tasted at the Lafaurie-Peyraguey vertical in Bordeaux.

One of the most concentrated wines of the vintage (as well as one of the most concentrated Bordeaux’s I have ever tasted), it is a huge, full-bodied, weighty, rich wine whose tannins are getting silkier and silkier. It appears set for another 30-40 years of life. This behemoth is a singularly profound example of Gruaud Larose that continues to justify its legendary status. Anticipated maturity: now-2050.

An absolute joy to taste. This walled estate on the edge of the village of St Estèphe is quite simply on fire under the ownership of Suravenir, who acquired the estate in 2012, and the current management team headed by Laurent Dufau. Aromas of black olives and summer pudding. This is all about purity, elegance and class. A great drive of bright dark fruits on the palate flows into exceptionally fine and subtle tannins. This is full of life and very long, with a real tingle of excitement at the end.

A stratospheric, regal wine, Calon Ségur embodies all the best qualities of the vintage. Rich to the point of being exotically ripe, 2018 reminds me of the 2014 in its composition, but with more of everything. On the palate, the 2018 is towering and statuesque, with soaring structure and tremendous overall intensity. Striking aromatic top notes and bright saline underpinnings give the 2018 its energy, tension and nuance. As in 2014, the entirety of the château's Cabernet Franc went into the Grand Vin. Inky, powerful and explosive, Calon Ségur is a headspinning wine. Don't miss it!

  • Wine Advocate, April 2019, Score: 96-98

The 2018 Calon-Ségur is blended of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot (14.9% alcohol). It is anticipated to age for 20 months in barriques, 100% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs just a little coaxing before it reveals seductive notes of baked cherries, warm cassis, licorice and smoked meats with nuances of hoisin, camphor, Chinese five spice and dried roses with a waft of cardamom. Full-bodied and completely packed with concentrated black fruit and spice layers, it has a firm frame of grainy tannins and a wicked backbone of freshness giving an energetic lift to the very long finish. There's lots of brightness coming from the Cabernet Franc component in here, but it is nonetheless a decadent expression.

  • James Suckling, April 2019, Score: 97-98

The quality of the tannins is most notable here; they are present, but totally integrated and folded into the wine. Medium-to full-bodied with lovely savory fruit and a persistent and long finish. Very harmonious and fine. Yet, with air, it takes off with tannin power.

  • Decanter, April 2019, Score: 96

An impressive, concentrated and powerful Calon that will win many admirers without a doubt, but I would be a little hesitant if you're a fan of the more classic balance found in the 2016. It has gorgeous chocolate and rich coffee notes, with complex exotic spices and even salted caramel on the finish, along with a lovely mouthwatering quality helped by a relatively low pH of 3.75 and a good yield of 41hl/ha. This will need long ageing, probably 20 months. I tasted it on several occasions and there are no arguments that it's a stunning wine but I would probably favour the 2016 if looking to cellar something, because it's more in character for what is one of my favourite properties in the appellation. 3% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 100% new oak. • Matthew Jukes, April 2019, Score: 19+

All of the Cabernet Franc in the property went in to the Grand Vin in this vintage and I have no doubt that it is this grape which has brought so much joy to this beautiful wine. Sexy and smooth Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot create the beating heart of this wine, but it’s the Cabernet Franc, with its beguiling aroma, that adds the X-factor. The depth of colour and haunting, violet tones do so much to invigorate the Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose is sensational, layered and exciting and the palate is stuffed with ebullient fruit and fine-grained tannins. It was, apparently, an easy vintage to make according to winemaker Vincent Millet as each plot was either very good or excellent. I have never seen Vincent smile so much in a tasting and it is not surprising because he has made one of the wines of the vintage.

  • Wine Spectator, April 2019, Score: 96-99

Delivers a laser beam of cassis, bitter plum and cherry reduction notes, with an extremely fine-grained structure carrying this through a long finish. Accents of iron and violet are piercing in their purity and definition. A very complete and precise wine.

  • Julia Harding, April 2019, Score: 18

Darkest cherry colour. Lifted and fragrant, very Cabernet Franc on the nose. Both black and dark-red fruit, almost raspberry, but pencil shavings too. Super-fine tannins, so silky already, so fluent, though there is clearly a density and concentration here in the texture as it builds in the mouth. Lovely dry texture on the finish, dark-fruited but full of life – I would not have thought this had so much new oak as it is swallowed by the fruit. Drink 2028-2040

Carlo Ferrini's Giodo 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is plush and softly layered, and the wine has plenty of fiber and cherry to absorb the power that comes naturally to this vintage. This is Carlo's seventh leaf (or vintage) of Brunello from his family-run estate, and it's nice to reflect on the consistency of style and quality achieved since this new venture emerged. Giodo has the advantage of coming onto the scene when international regard and understanding for Brunello was highest (think back to the excellent 2010 vintage). Carlo has not disappointed. He brings us a modern, forward-thinking wine that is rooted in local Tuscan winemaking tradition (just think, one of his first stints was at Soldera Case Basse years ago). This vintage brings home that signature Giodo personality with black cherry, dark fruit and elegant earthy end notes. At about 18-years-old now, his vines are entering an interesting chapter of their lifespan, and we can expect more great results from this estate. Drink 2024-2040

Aromas of spiced plum, dark cherry and violets combine with those of earth and a hint of the sauvage all of which is trimmed in enough wood to mention. The medium-bodied flavors are at once rich and refined with good vibrancy and evident minerality arising on the youthfully austere and persistent finish where hints of wood and warmth appear. The supporting tannins are relatively fine-grained and overall this is really quite good. Outstanding. Drink: 2024+

  • Stephen Tanzer, January 2018, Score: 91-93

Healthy dark red. Lovely aromatic lift to the aromas of raspberry, black cherry, licorice, mint and menthol. A step up in intensity and depth of flavor from the foregoing samples, showing a stony, savory pungency to its brisk dark fruit and mineral flavors. The sweetest and richest of these 2016s to this point but also boasts terrific energy and lift. The savory, subtly rising, palate-staining finish piques the taste buds. Close to normal yield here, from a cooler site high on the slope.

  • Decanter, January 2018, Score: 90

The Champeaux is delicious this year, but just a bit facile for a Gevrey premier cru. Notes of raspberry, cherry and spice, framed by some Cadus cooperage, precede a medium-full, supple wine with elegant tannins and an ample core of sweet fruit. Drink 2024-2040

The fact that we tasted the 2018 in a portacabin due to the extensive cellar works taking place at this great property says buckets about the quality of this wine that we left almost speechless at its quality. In a year when the right bank has excelled, Ch Figeac sits up there with the absolute best. The most striking characteristics are its brightness, freshness and absolute purity. One of the most balanced wines of the vintage: there are subtle summer fruits, precision and balance in the palate, the tannins are controlled and yet structured, and there is a line of freshness flowing throughout. Amazing poise and superb quality, a real star in the making.

The 2018 Figeac is simply magnificent. A regal, soaring wine with tremendous vertical lift and nuance, the 2018 is marvelously complete from the very first taste. All the elements fall into place effortlessly. Medium in body and refined, the 2018 is vibrant, with fine tannins and, frankly, quite a bit more freshness than I expected to see given the very dry, sunny summer. Rose petal, mint, lavender and spice add nuance to a core of red/purplish fruit. Harvest started on September 17 and finished on October 12. Yields were 39 hectoliters per hectare, just shy of the historical average of 42/32. While mildew pressure was an issue, it was the dry October winds and their dehydrating effect on the last Cabernets that impacted yields most. Like so many of his colleagues, Technical Director Frederic Faye and his team opted for gentler vinifications with no SO2 at crush, lower temperatures in fermentation and smaller pumpovers. The 2018 Figeac is brilliant. That's all there is to it. The blend is 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc. Tasted three times.

  • Wine Advocate, April 2019, Score: 97-99

The 2018 Figeac is composed of 37% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc, harvested September 17 to October 12 with a 3.7 pH and 14% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, it charges out of the gate with vivacious black and red cherries, cassis, warm plums and wild blueberries scents plus fragrant hints of violets, star anise, tilled soil and forest floor with wafts of Ceylon tea and chocolate box. Full-bodied and jam-packed with energetic, crunchy black and blue fruits, it has a rock-solid, firm, grainy frame and loads of bright, refreshing sparks lifting the dense layers on the very long, savory finish. Wow—the Cabernet really makes itself known this vintage, and it is good. The signature of this wine is so clear, so defined, that this is a Bordeaux wine without peers. In my view, this is the finest Figeac ever produced.

  • James Suckling, April 2019, Score: 98-99

This shows wonderful precision and focus with dark-berry, tobacco, and blueberry character. Full-bodied, tight and vivid. Solid and structured. Really powerful for Figeac. The real new style here of Figeac that harkens back to the great wines of the 1950s and 1940s. This year, equal parts of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc.

  • Decanter, April 2019, Score: 98

Back to a more traditional blend after last year's frost impact, Figeac has done a wonderful job of harnessing the opulence of the vintage while maintaining freshness. This is extremely focussed and precise, with a silky texture and inky depths, developing complexity as the flavours unfurl. These are big tannins but they steal up on you, doing that subtle creep that's such a marker of the vintage. Powerful, utterly gorgeous and clearly a wine that will age well, this is equal to the estate's excellent 2016. Harvest ran from 17 September to 12 October, giving a 39hl/ha yield (with 70% organic farming, 30% bio-control). 65% of the crop went into the grand vin. 3.7pH. Drinking Window 2027 - 2042

  • Wine Spectator, April 2019, Score: 97-100

This is pretty gorgeous, with velvety texture that lets nearly exotic cassis, plum and blackberry fruit reduction flavors roll through. Has a beautiful bass line of warm earth and smoldering tobacco notes all while keeping its sensational mouthfeel. The encore on the finish makes you realize this is the serious gourmet stuff. One of the highlights of the vintage.

  • Julia Harding, April 2019, Score: 18

Inky with purple rim. A little bit spicy on the nose, scented and ripe but not overripe, that touch of nutmeg that I found on the Nénin. Ripe and pure. Very smooth and rich on the palate, remarkably soft when you know the quantity of tannins. Smooth and accessible, rounded and luxurious but balanced by the freshness. Grainy texture but fine grained. Second tasting of a cooler sample (the temporary tasting room was a tent and the samples warmed up quickly when the sun was out): fragrant with small black berries, opens up to a more scented beauty, still some spice but also a hint of roses. Greater finesse and freshness at a cooler temperature. Concentrated but so round on the finish. More Cabernet Sauvignon would have given a hardness on the finish, says Faye. Cool chalky finesse. Fine-grained persistence and freshness with a surprising juiciness on the finish. (JH) 14% Drink 2024-2034
