Intoxicating purity of fruit on the nose, the aromatics are singing, albeit a slightly darker fruited profile that sees raspberry and strawberry meld with blackberry and black cherry. We also love the darker floral aromatics the peep through, of iris and violets. There is a bit more grip and muscle on the palate of the Case Mate thanks to the slick tannins. The Ginestra vineyards showing its signature intensity. It also shows delicious sapidity to complement the rich but pure fruit. We love its sumptuous minty, forest fruit finish. This is brooding, but super-expressive.

Wine Advocate, June 2022
From a vineyard located across from Gavarini Chiniera, this is a slightly more robust and concentrated wine. The 2018 Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté sources its fruit from a position at a slightly lower elevation with a bigger component of clay in the soils. The south and southeast-facing hillside is also more open to the horizon. These conditions give the Ginestra Casa Maté a broad texture and rich flavors of black and purple fruits. The wine is compact with dense texture that will relax over the next 10 years of age. Drink 2025-2048

Aromas of dried and fresh strawberries with some tar and cedar follow through to a medium to full body with chewy tannins that are polished and attractive. Give this three or four years to come more together, but a pretty wine for the vintage. Try after 2025.

Asili is perhaps the most famous and celebrated cru in Barbarecso, a magical combination of muscle and refinement, and the 2019 is a seriously exciting vintage. Boasting noteworthy power and persuasive elegance, the 2019 has pure, crystalline palate with a silky but firm body. While the nose is a little shy at this stage, this will unfurl to reveal great things. Drink 2024-2034.

With the white label, the 2019 Barbaresco Asili is a wine of exceptional clarity and focus. That brightness is applied to the bouquet and the mouthfeel alike, where the wine feels streamlined, elegant and tight. Asili is redolent of wild fruit, violets and candied orange peel. This wine was bottled in 2021 and needs a few more years in glass before it really starts to unwind and soften. Drink 2025-2048

A finely detailed wine with compact power lurking underneath. The 2018 reveals the playful crunch of fresh red cherry, red plum, raspberry and pomegranate entangled with balsamic, white pepper and a soft saltiness. This magnificent wine has freshness and fruit in spades, and the fine, chalky texture offers up a soothing structure. There is so much flow and a distinctly Burgundian edge to this famous Verduno wine in 2018.

The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero has good depth, but is otherwise pretty unexpressive. Sweet floral and spice notes emerge, but only with great reluctance. Readers will have to be patient. It will be interesting to see how this shows post-bottling. The Monvigliero is, uncharacteristically, the most reticent of these wines today. Drinking window: 2024-2043.

Mid to deep ruby. Tight, compact and very lifted nose with sour cherry, but really very embryonic. This is more sour cherry/cool climate and has less obvious richness compared with their San Lorenzo di Verduno. Amarena-cherry notes and minerally salty hints underneath. Truly complex, elegant, compact and youthful with a beautiful aromatic build-up on the finish. Finely balanced and with a layer of finely ground tannins. Long. Possesses inherent freshness with lots of acidity. Drink 2022-2032.

Goedhuis Waddesdon, September 2025
This world-renowned vineyard is the longest consecutively produced single-site wine in all of Australia. Expectations are always high with this cuvée and the 2015 delivers in spades. Blackberry and blueberry fruit dominate the nose, with a hint of some dried cranberry and preserved orange peel too, with subtle notes of tobacco, cola root and vanilla spice coming to the fore with each swirl. One always finds a notably peppery character in Mount Edelstone and this is as clear as ever, lively and enticing. The palate possesses Henschke’s typical power but with refinement and a velvety texture, while more black fruits add a plushness to the finish. Hitting its stride now after celebrating its tenth birthday, this is utterly satisfying, enticing and delicious, and will reward anyone pouring themselves a glass now.

Wine Advocate, May 2020, Score: 95
Camphor, pitch and raspberry appear on the nose of Henschke's 2015 Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shiraz. It's a muscular, full-bodied expression of Eden Valley Shiraz, with notes of black olives and cassis on the palate and enough tannins to give this amply-endowed wine a savory edge. There's a lovely sense of tension between the fruity and savory elements and a long, velvety finish, making this one of the stars of the lineup—and a relative bargain compared to the Hill of Grace. The dry-farmed vineyard was planted in 1912 and has been bottled as a single-vineyard wine since 1952, making it one of the oldest such wines in Australia. Drink 2022-2035.

A very profound sage note here with wild brambleberries, bay leaf and subtle oak influence, cast across a green-peppercorn and mint-tea nuance with such bright red berries and plums. The palate has a super plush and elegant shape and fine, velvety-tannin texture with plush, long red plums. Such poise and elegance with length and concentration here. An exceptional vintage for Mount Edelstone. Drink or hold.

Opaque ruby. Dark berry preserves, fruitcake, pipe tobacco candied flowers and a hint of vanilla on the deeply perfumed nose. Stains the palate with sappy black and blue fruit, mocha, licorice and rose pastille flavors and exotic spice and mineral nuances add energetic lift. Fleshy and deep but lively as well, with an impressively long, gently tannic finish that shows superb focus and dark fruit-driven persistence. Drink 2024 - 2037.

Matthew Jukes, May 2020, Score: 19+
This is a wine for which I have a particular penchant and this 2015 vintage is yet another cracker. The oak in this wine is completely integrated already and this means that, like HoG, there is an immediacy and allure which you normally have to extract from this wine by torturing it in a decanter and then finding the largest glasses you have and, excepting the fact that you will have a serious case of RSI, engage in vigorous bouts of swirling. I love the way in which the textbook weather conditions in the 2015 vintage have tamed this heroic wine. This is a dreamy, succulent, expansive Mount Edelstone with volume and silkiness and there is scintillating black pepper detail here, too. Without the inkiness and power of Hill of Grace, but with hints of red fruit in among the black theme, this is a more loquacious offering which does not stand on ceremony and gets straight to the task of romancing your taste buds. With more than a nod to the flavour profile of the epic 2010 vintage, this is a cracking wine and it is one of the finest I have tasted from this awesome single vineyard. Drink 2022-2040.

Jancis Robinson, May 2020, Score: 17++
Decanting recommended and in this case I can see why. It's still much more youthful than the other two Henschke 2015s I have tasted so far – Euphonium and Cyril Henschke. The tight, introvert aromas of balsam and dried grasses are just starting to come out. There's a definite touch of mint there too. This is drier and less flattering than the other two at the moment, with a minerally undertow. Strongly savoury finish and beautifully made but not nearly ready. I may come back and revise this note once the wine has sat in a decanter for a while but I'd advise stashing it in a cellar for now. And, gosh, it needs food! But it certainly mellowed in the glass and overnight. Lovely after 24 hours. Drink 2022-2034.

The 2021 Canon was picked September 16 to October 6 and matured in 50% new oak for a planned 16–18 months. Around 70% of the vineyard produced the normal yield, which underwent a 50% deselection, yet it still yielded 40hL/ha because the vines did not suffer stress. After mildew, any bunches that showed damage on the stems were removed. Nicolas Audebert told me that there was no concentration or saignée, just a little chaptalization (around 0.5–1.0%, depending on the tank). This has quite a concentrated bouquet of opulent dark cherries, blueberry, violet and just a hint of camphor. The palate is medium-bodied and pliant, with gentle grip, saturated tannins and a judicious touch of spice toward the compact finish. While recent top-flight vintages may well eclipse this Canon, it still stands as a fine addition to the recent roster. Drink 2030 - 2060

This is a gentle, layered, silky and near-flamboyant Canon, and nothing is forced nor too urgent, and the result is a wine that is serenely fruited and beautifully balanced on the nose and palate. While this is firmly a medium-weight wine, there is a density of perfume and succulence on the palate, and it will enchant all-comers. The freshness and elegance here are tremendous, and the flavours are kaleidoscopic. With an impressive length and thought-provoking complexity, this is a multifaceted wine with great accuracy, refinement, and drive.

Gorgeous bright plum colour with violet reflections. The epitome of careful, precise, well-spliced winemaking. Sibling estate Berliquet has perhaps more immediate charm, because there is more power running through it, but this is just elegance and finesse personified. Red cherry, raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, slate, saffron, oyster shell, they have teased out layers of complexity that were not easy to find in the vintage, and there is length also, with pummice stone salinity scraping across the palate. It's subtle, and it's not at the heights of a 2019 Canon, but this will not be out of place in a vertical of the estate. Tasted twice. 50% new oak, 40hl/h yield, harvest September 16 to October 8. Dried herbs, licorice, mocha, cassis and blackberry open beautifully. The 70% new oak is already nicely integrated. To be sure, the 2021 is nervy and taut, as most wines are in this vintage. Wine Advocate, April 2022, Score: 95-96
A superb effort that transcends the challenges of the vintage, the 2021 La Conseillante offers up a beautifully perfumed nose of wild berries, raspberry coulis, violets, exotic spices and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, it's a sensual, seamless wine that's deep and layered, structured around supple tannins and lively acids. Perfumed and penetrating, the 2021 isn't the most powerful wine this estate has produced, but it brilliantly exemplifies the rare structural elegance and almost Burgundian aromatic range that so often set this great estate apart from the rest of the Pomerol appellation. It's a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc.

Matthew Jukes, April 2022, Score: 19.5+
It was clear within about two hours of tasting in the heartland of Pomerol that four pivotal producers that I visited had made stunning wines. So, in order to keep destroying the lies told before the campaign started, this is not a Cabernet vintage, nor is it a Merlot one. It is not a Left Bank vintage, nor is it a Right Bank one. It is nothing other than one thing – a forensic analysis, nay vinous audit, of every single estate’s fitness to deploy a finely drilled, immensely willing and able squads of teammates, whether they are in the field, in the chai, or both, to chaperone the finest grapes on their path to making the most complete and balanced wines possible. This has been achieved by all of those properties in this Report. Whether you gain Bronze, Silver or Gold scores is a moot point. But if you are here, on these pages, you have done a good job. But we all know why I am moved to taste this number of extremely young wines in a short space of time to determine those with the most potential to astound and amaze peoples’ senses. So, to La Conseillante – the 150th anniversary of this Château. Countless selfless employees and friends, under the guidance of a management team of prodigiously talented and excellence-focussed people, have made, yet again, a life-affirming wine. I know, having spent a few hours (only) over a goodly number of years, that winemaker Marielle Cazaux loves smooth, silky and pure wines. This is the starting point of her ambitions – a point at which few finish. But, in 2021, with the elements against her and her team, they simply knuckled down, shared equipment and bodies with her neighbour (Juliette at L’Evangile q.v.) and made the finest wine possible in this vintage. La Conseillante’s terroir is special. It has the innate ability to make astounding wines in hot years and cold years. Of course, La Conseillante is not alone in this skill, but the camaraderie, openness, and honesty here mean that tasters like me can understand how on earth this is possible. They ‘fought’ the frost. They had ‘great luck’. They kept ‘cool heads’. They were ‘amazed’ at the purity of the fruit. This is emotion triumphing, not just the vines triumphing over Mother Nature. Marielle and I talked about the ‘crumpled dune flower’ notes that I found over and over again in the greatest wines. It was here, too, at La Conseillante. But it was not everywhere. Why do the finest wines on both sides of the Gironde have this character, given that I felt it was a Cabernet Sauvignon trait (see my Margaux notes)? I found it again at Cheval Blanc in celestial Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Perhaps this is Bordeaux’s most elusive and essential pheromonal element – a magical spell I cannot resist. Either way, there are, I think, 12 wines that have this character in 2021, and they will remain in my taste memory forever as I seek out more and more and more. So, I wonder if it is relevant to record a traditional tasting note for this wine. It has a spellbinding perfume, an exquisite texture and the singular purity and persistence of the most outstanding red wines imaginable. So, on balance, I don’t think it is necessary.

Deeply colored, on the palate the wine is exactly as it should be, elegant, refined, lifted, vivacious, and energetic, with a savory edge to the earthy red fruits and a hint of oak that should become completely integrated with a few years time. Perhaps this is a modern day version of the 1985, which if you have not tasted it lately, has aged extremely well. The harvest took place September 28, October 10, making this the latest vintage in the history of the estate. The wine blends 85% Merlot with 15% Cabernet Franc, 13.3% ABV, 3.6 pH. The yields were 39 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2025-2050.

Flavoursome, sculpted, successful, this is rippling with violet and rosebud aromatics, followed by raspberry and black cherry fruits. It maintains momentum through the mid palate with a creamy texture and gourmet touches of liquorice root, cocoa bean and precisely-expressed slate minerality. Harvest began the latest ever, on September 28 through to October 12, 39hl/h yield, almost exactly average for the property (the average in Pomerol this year was closer to 29hl/h), from 9.77ha of vines in production, 3.6ph, 70% new oak with 3% amphora and 3.5% press wine. A successful showing for the 150th vintage of the estate from director Marielle Cazeaux. Michel Rolland consultant.

The 2021 L'Eglise-Clinet was picked September 27–29, a rapid harvest within three days; winemaker Noëmie Durantou told me she wanted to beat the forecasted rain that would have diluted the fruit. Raised in 75% new oak, this has a less concentrated, mineral-driven bouquet that bides its time, offering nuanced pine cone scents with aeration. The palate is clearly built around elegance, with its finely chiseled tannins and wonderful crushed stone notes. Perhaps a more streamlined l'Eglise-Clinet, showing wonderful precision. This Pomerol never tries to outdo its limitations or ape previous vintages, lending it an intangible sense of honesty. Beautiful. (14.0% alcohol). Drink 2029 - 2060

A deep, serious wine, the 2021 L'Eglise Clinet unwinds in the glass with notions of wild berries and plums mingled with dark chocolate, sweet loamy soil, warm spices, violets and black truffle. Full-bodied, concentrated and muscular, it's rich and layered, with a concentrated core of fruit, lively acids and plenty of ripe, powdery tannin that nods to its origins in a sector of Pomerol capable of producing some of the appellation's most structured, long-lived wines. It's a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc.

This is a very exciting L’Eglise Clinet with every element of La Petit Eglise’s armoury but with more volume, more richesse, slightly more structure, and infinite detail. The perfume is sensational and exotic and very real - like walking down a country lane in the autumn with your senses on red alert. The oak acidity and tannin are all perfectly entwined, but they take a back seat allowing the splendid fruit to shine. This thrilling wine is one of the most expressive and refined vintages from this brilliant label. Noëmie Durantou Reilhac mentioned that she found the calmness of going into a church in this wine. I think that this is an atmospheric image, as long as this moment coincided with a full peeling of bells coming to a dramatic stop. The cacophony and subsequent silence, with the aerial vibrations diminishing above the congregation, was akin to what was happening above my body after I tasted this wine.

This is very different and, unsurprisingly, far superior on the nose of black cherries, black truffle, crushed stone and a touch of orange peel; very focused and very Pomerol. The palate is medium-bodied, cohesive and elegant with supple tannins and fine acidity, yet there is real depth and a sense of nascent energy toward the finish. Medium to full-bodied, ample and velvety, with fine concentration and rich, powdery structuring tannins that assert themselves on the finish, this estate's rather low average vine age meant Evangile didn't suffer much from coulure this year, and the rainy growing season also spared young Cabernet Franc from hydric stress—explaining its historically high percentage in the 2021 blend.

It was a pleasure to meet Juliette Couderc at L’Evangile, and there is no doubt that this woman has the work ethic and forensic knowledge of her craft to take this estate to another level. She explained that two plots of young vine Cabernet Franc vines performed amazingly well (like Cheval Blanc), contributing to an astoundingly ripe, dense and seriously impressive wine. The nose is exceptional and intriguing, and the colour is darker than many, with creamy tannins and superb weight. While it is formed of only 69% Merlot, this is a wine founded on clay, and the depth of flavour is wickedly enticing. Juliette explained that she and her team work on perfume intricacies, endeavouring to add spice notes and other higher, complex tones. While there is no doubt that some of this detail can be determined in the chai, the driving force of the elemental flavours in this beautiful wine is found only metres from the room in which I tasted this wine. Do skip to my note for Blason for more technical notes; suffice to say that this is a direction-shifting wine from L’Evangile, and while the adjustment is subtle, it will have a long-lasting effect, and this wine will stand as a vital marker in time for this noble property.

Savoury, supple black and blue fruits, austere but with sapidity and juice, and a gorgeous wash of campfire smoke, salted caramel, liquorice, cloves and saffron spices. 20hl/h yield after mildew. Troplong Mondot’s 2003 is a brilliant success in this vintage, largely because of the limestone soils and incredibly low yields. There are nearly 70 acres of vines in production, yields were tiny, and the harvest was early. Nevertheless, there is an opulence and youthfulness in this wine that suggest it has at least a decade of life left. A luxurious effort with high glycerin, loads of blueberry, mulberry, black currant, licorice and charcoal ember-like notes, full body, low acidity and sweet tannin, this beauty is close to full maturity and can be drunk now as well as over the next decade.

This superb estate, run with impeccable attention to detail by Christine Valette, has produced a formidable, backward wine that will require considerable cellaring. When St.-Emilion's newclassification is announced in several months, it will be a crime if Troplong is not promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classe status. Even by Bordeaux standards this is a weighty vin du garde, with huge density, a backward, masculine style, an inky dark ruby/purple hue, and subtle notions of white chocolate, espresso roast, plums, blackberries, and currants. Full-bodied, powerful, and “closed for business” at present, it exhibits beautiful purity, stunning depth, and a long, persistent finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025+.

The 2021 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse was picked from September 13 until October 1–2, the Cabernet Franc later, on October 14, starting around 7:00 am. Mildew reduced the Merlot to 28hL/ha, whereas the Cabernet was cropped around 35hL/ha. This was raised in 58% new oak, Joséphine Duffau being prudent with the level of new wood in order to maintain what she describes as a chalky taste. It has a fragrant bouquet of brambly red fruit, dark cherries and subtle undergrowth scents, all delivered up in that judicious use of new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and good density, equal to if not better than others on the limestone plateau, yet still quite mineral-driven, leading into a silky-smooth, cohesive finish. Following the tremendous success of the 2020 vintage, I was excited to taste 2021 Beauséjour and tour the Château for the first time with owner Joséphine Duffau-Lagarrosse at the helm. Having seen first-hand the chalk cellars under the winery and therefore gaining a perfect perspective on the stunning vineyard and the soils in which her vines are planted, it was not a shock to hear her response to my parting question. I asked what was she most proud of in the 2021 vintage, and she replied, “I love this vintage and the chalky freshness on the finish”. This is a more energetic, lively, and expressive wine than I could have imagined. The authenticity, accuracy, and direct representation of its unique setting, looking down on Angélus and Le Dôme, among others, is truly outstanding. The phenomenal limestone plateau over which Château Beauséjour hovers cannot make anything other than a unique wine, but the thrilling perfume of violet, cherry and plum is as invigorating as it is delicious. The palate is pristine and carefully tuned for maximum tenderness, and the finish is fine-grained and savoury. This wine might win the prize for aromatic transcendence and Merlot textural delicacy because there are few wines that compare to the mesmerising bouquet and silkiness found here. The palate is supple, balletic and minutes long and then, right at the end of the experience, the tannins arrive - energetic, mouth-watering and ravishingly scouring. What a wine.

Unrolls slowly but surely, with evident ripeness to the red fruits, and salt-cracker salinity on the finish. Goedhuis, December 2019
The jewel in Tortochot’s crown; almost 0.5 hectares of Gevrey’s greatest grand cru provide seven barrels of wine. With stunning damson fruit aromas, this possesses all the characters that define its grand cru status: power, breadth, layers of flavour and absolute balance between intensity, alcohol and integrated freshness. Exceptional.

The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru has a very refined and elegant bouquet with pure red fruit mixed with sous-bois and wilted rose petals. The palate is very harmonious on the entry with a fine bead of acidity and caressing tannins. A touch of balsamic infuses the plush red fruit on the silky textured finish. It is not as sophisticated as a Rousseau Chambertin (heaven forbid!) however one could argue that this is cut from a similar cloth. Drink 2023-2042

The slightly higher vineyard location of Lavaux always allows its wines to maintain a degree of freshness, whatever the climatic conditions. This is a superb expression showing off the warmth of the year with its striking damson and blackberry fruit flavours. The real appeal however, is the line of freshness and minerality that flows through the wine. Precise and true to both Pinot Noir and its terroir. Outstanding.

The 2003 Hermitage Vin de Paille was spectacular. Made from straw dried Marsanne and aged all in new oak, it offers incredible notes of caramelized tropical fruits, quince, brioche, cigar and honeycomb to go with a unctuous, thick and chewy profile on the palate that somehow stays fresh and lively. Almost requiring a fork as opposed to a glass, it will most likely be indestructible in the cellar and can be enjoyed anytime over the coming century.

This is also somewhat reduced but here it's milder and does not completely block the spicy redberry fruit aromas that precede rich and, in contrast to the slightly funky nose, exceptionally fresh and finely detailed flavors brimming with an almost pungent minerality while culminating in a delicious, sappy and mouth coating finish where a touch of wood surfaces. This is cool and focused and if not quite as complex as the best in the range, it certainly is attractive and sleek.Drink: 2014+.

Azelia's 2016 Barolo San Rocco shows terrific density and richness, but it is less aromatically expressive than most of the other 2016s in the range. Readers will have to give this at least a few years in bottle for the tannins to soften. Even in the early going, though, the 2016 is deep, powerful and loaded with pedigree. Now that most of Azelia's wines are aged in cask, the influence of small French oak is especially evident. Drink 2023-2041.

The 2017 Barolo Cerretta is another powerful wine. Unlike the San Rocco, which is dense in the middle, the Cerretta is distinguished by a more austere, linear feel. The 2016 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru confirms its brilliant showing from barrel, unwinding in the glass with aromas of wild berries, orange rind and peony that mingle with savory bass-notes of espresso roast, dark chocolate and subtle grilled meats. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and multidimensional, with immense depth at the core, a magical sense of completeness, a satiny chassis of tannin and a long, penetrating finish. Broad-shouldered but elegant, this very Clos Vougeot is very impressive indeed.

Decanter, October 2017, Score: 97
The Mugneret sisters set the standard for what is possible in the Clos Vougeot, and their 2016 is only the latest instalment in a long series of great wines. Aromas of rose petal, plummy fruit, rich soil, incense and spice mingle in an incipiently complex bouquet, judiciously framed by new wood, 70% new. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, pure and complete, with a deep core of sapid fruit which cloaks its ample structural chassis of fine tannins, succulent acids and superb length. The sense of effortless harmony marks this out as one of the wines of the vintage (WK).

40% down in volume. Also 70% new wood. Fairly deep dense purple. A fair amount of energy to this, but it is quite discreet for Clos Vougeot. Then a wave of fruit floods across the palate. Much more intensity late on rather than early. Plenty of oak too, but together they are happy partners and very persistent. Here comes the wine!

An elegant and very pure nose reflects soft floral and earth nuances on the primarily red berry fruit aromas. Asili - 95 points. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is distinguished by its extremely linear and direct approach with wild rose, cassis and lots of mineral or crushed stone. The wine is taut and fresh on the palate with a medium-lean texture and lots of depth and persistence. I love those bright rose petal-like nuances on the close of this wine, and the tannins are firm and silky. This bottle boasts a unique identity in this group of Riservas. Drink 2025-2050. Rio Sordo - 95 points. The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo has a mineral character and a sleek, firm approach that gives this wine its special identity. The wine is polished, almost glossy in texture with blackcurrant, plum and wild rose, and the tannins are gripping, although the Rio Sordo sports a lean to medium-rich density overall. Drink 2025-2048. Montefico - 95 points. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is especially broad and thick in texture. It feels generous to the senses, wrapping thickly over the palate with a pretty mix of firm tannins and soft fruit fibre. These elements help to increase both the volume and the persistence of this classic wine. There is some dryness on the finish (and 15% alcohol), and you also taste crushed mineral and stone. Drink 2025-2048. Montestefano - 96 points. The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is darkly concentrated and among the richest wines in this series of single-vineyard Riservas. Montestefano is angular, textured and bold with dark fruit aromas, dried blackberry, toasted almond and cured tobacco. With this vintage, you get an age-worthy wine that offers brawn and power for drinking in the medium term, but it will become increasingly silky and slender with time. Dusty tannins and crushed stone appear on the long finish. Drink 2025-2050. Rabaja - 96+ points. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is another spectacular release from this cooperative winery that hits it out of the ballpark with each set of new releases. That impressive track record includes this wine that delivers extreme focus, depth and integrity. The bouquet is very clear cut with dark cherry, tart plum, spice and blood orange, but it is also complex and fluid. It offers new perspectives with each swirl of the glass. From a hot vintage, the Rabajà is smooth, powerful and balanced. I would bet on long aging for this bottle. Drink 2025-2050. Ovello - 94+ points. One of the bigger productions in the Produttori del Barbaresco's portfolio is the 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello. All of the Riservas in this vintage are characterized by especially exuberant and bold aromas, and this bottle is a prime example. Cassis, wild cherry, tobacco, rusty nail and licorice build intensity. The wine is tapered and silky in texture, but it also offers a good amount of power to carry it through the aging process. Drink 2025-2045. Paje - 94 points. The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is impressive on all fronts, but especially in terms of aromas. There's so much brightness here with red and purple fruits, rust and a dark note of clove or exotic spice. No element is out of place, but together they help to build the intensity of this balanced wine. It shows a soft, velvety texture, and perhaps there is a little more ripeness overall in this warm vintage. Drink 2024-2045. Pora - 94 points. The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is usually the first wine I taste each year when I review this set of Riservas from Produttori del Barbaresco. That's because it usually appears as the most delicate, and the intensity of each successive bottle increases after this one. But these schematics are a bit more difficult to align in a hot and dry vintage such as this that produced richer and more succulent fruit across the board. The Pora is redolent of red and purple fruit with a little more blackberry and plum compared to previous editions. The tannic strength of the wine is also more elaborate. Pora works very well in 2017. Drink 2025-2048. Muncagota - 94 points. The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota plays some of its best cards in terms of texture, offering silky tannins, firmness and a long-lasting veil of fruit flavours. Cassis, wild cherry, camphor ash, spice and iron ore are aromatic protagonists. This wine is lean and compact but very linear and focused. Like the other Riservas in this group of new releases, the wine is fermented in steel and aged in large oak casks for 32 months. Drink 2025-2048.

This wine and from here onwards the samples have approximately the percentage of new oak for the final wine. These are old vines. 85% are over 70 years old…. Aromatic, spicy, some sweet notes from the oak, but floral too. Really richly textured with depth and succulence to the mid palate. It is rounded, generous and fruity. A very concentrated village wine. It is also nicely fresh…A little bit of the oak on the finish, which for the moment masks the aromatics, but it is long and fresh after the rich palate. A super-charged Chambolle.

The generosity of the Merlot fruit is supported by the energy and purity of the Cabernet Franc, which gives additional grip and a noticeable lift of fresh acidity. Neal Martin, April 2022, Score: 93-95
The 2021 Ausone was picked on September 30 for the Merlot and October 4–6 for the Cabernet Franc, with a higher percentage of Cabernet Franc because some of the Merlot was deselected into the Chapelle. Matured in 90% new oak, this has a fragrant and floral bouquet, more iris than violet, revealing a hint of seaweed in the background. The palate is well-defined, quite strict and focused, certainly one of the more mineral-driven Ausones that I have encountered at this stage. The limestone terroir is evident on the finish. Again, this is a little leaner and less flamboyant than recent vintages. Having tasted Ausone at this prenatal stage for over 20 years, I don’t find the thrilling "drive” or the pyrotechnics of the 2001, 2010, 2016 or 2019. Yet this Ausone is compelling in its own uncompromising way, and I wouldn't want it any different. Drink 2026 - 2050

Antonio Galloni, April 2022, Score: 93-95
The 2021 Ausone could turn out to be one of the wines of the vintage on the Right Bank. It shows terrific balance, with just enough mid-palate sweetness and texture to fill out the layers. To be sure the 2021 is an understated Ausone, but all the elements are so nicely balanced. Red/purplish berry fruit, pomegranate, spice and mocha are pushed forward. The blend is 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot, with the Merlot more in evidence today while the Franc is felt mostly in the wine's finish. Rose petal, cinnamon and blood orange add an exotic flourish. Drink 2036-2061

Wine Advocate, April 2022, Score: 97-100
A blend of 65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Merlot, the 2021 Ausone is a strong candidate for the title of wine of the vintage. Wafting from the glass with aromas of wild blueberries and raspberries mingled with rose petals, violets, exotic spices, vine smoke and blood orange, it's full-bodied, seamless and sensual, with a satiny attack that segues into a deep, layered mid-palate of breathtaking precision and intensity without weight. Built around bright acids and ultra-refined tannins and concluding with a resonant, perfumed finish, this profound young Ausone represents the essence of this great limestone terroir. I am not in the habit of drinking six-month-old Bordeaux cask samples, but this is one wine that would have sorely tempted me to make an exception to that rule if my appointment at the estate hadn't been one of the first of the day!

Matthew Jukes, April 2022, Score: 19+
This is a wonderfully suave and cultured Ausone with a quietness and composure that is compelling. The nose is floral and slightly spicy over a core of classic Ausone wild red and black fruit and it is delivered sotte voce with the palate following in a similar vein. The finish is as civilised as it gets with discreet levels of tannins hidden beneath the flowing crimson gown of fruit. It seems so calm and restrained that you wonder where the classic Ausone power and majesty is to be found and the answer is on the nose. If you don’t spend some time on the perfume, you will miss everything – the whole story, the plot line, the set-up, the truth. While the finale will happen in a couple of decades time, the cast is complete. If you read the statistics above, just as in any situation then you might conclude that this is a powerful, oaky, concentrated wine. This could not be further from the truth – it is sensational and as considered, calm and sophisticated as any the very finest in vintage.

Violet edging, jewel red depths. There is austerity on the tannins here, but also great depths through the palate, with controlled but juicy loganberry and raspberry fruits, and waves of saffron, creamy red-fruit puree, crushed rock, cold ash and salt-cracker salinity. Subdued, with hidden power and complexity. A tough year for this stable of wines - or rather proof of their exceptionally high standards, making a half production of Simard, no Haut Simard, tiny amounts of Fonbel and almost certainly no Moulin St Georges. The last year that Ausone will be recorded as a Premier Grand Cru Classé A, before publication of the new ranking in September 2022. Harvest September 30 to October 6, 100% new oak. In conversion to organic farming since 2020, Philippe Baillarguet cellar master. Average vine age 55 years.

The 2021 Pavillon Rouge continues the trend of more Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc in the final blend as the vines planted 20 years ago reach maturity. Aged in 50% and 60% new oak, it has a very well-defined bouquet with perfumed black fruit, crushed violet and a touch of blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, rounded and fleshy to the point that you could almost run down the famous driveway and drink a bottle. Quite persistent on the finish. Very fine. The 2021 Pavillon Rouge is soft, sensual and open-knit, all qualities that make it an absolute delight to taste today. A burst of red/purplish fruit, rose petal, leather and sweet spice gives the 2021 its upfront appeal. There's lovely energy and brightness underpinning it all. Soaring aromatic top notes add allure, making it impossible to resist a second taste. Drink 2031-2046

Aromas of plums, raspberries and sweet spices introduce the 2021 Pavillon Rouge, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and vibrant wine that's impressively rich and mouthfilling, revealing a deep core of fruit framed by powdery tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, saline finish. The blend is 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, and Philippe Bascaules observes that parcels planted 20 years ago and destined for the grand vin when they're a bit older are increasingly making the cut for Pavillon Rouge.

This has a mirabelle plum, raspberry and red cherry character, softly finessed with texture and depth, given extra complexity by curling floral aromatics. Classic balance, siky texure, although with a less generous and rounded feel to the tannins than the past few vintages of Pavillon Rouge. 36hl/h yield, with around 5% lost to frost but no mildew because treated (organically) throughout the season. 30% of overall production.

St Emilion’s most historic estate expresses its great terroir of limestone and calcareous clay to absolute perfection. A blend of 65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Merlot, with an array of wild hedgerow fruits and black forest gâteau. It is extraordinarily layered, poised and yet lively at the same time. The generosity of the Merlot fruit is supported by the energy and purity of the Cabernet Franc, which gives additional grip and a noticeable lift of fresh acidity. This wine has so much potential and great class.

Underbrush, smoke, cigar wrapper, espresso, spice, dark cocoa, flowers and the strong sensation of crushed rocks and stones tossed into the Atlantic ocean create the the enticing bouquet. On the palate, the wine is medium/full-bodied, elegant, polished and chalky with layers of sweet, ripe, earthy, red pit fruits, salty tannins, herbs dark chocolate. There is length, minerality and complexity on the mid-palate and a vibrancy to the red fruits with a strong crushed rock influence in the finish. This is a serious candidate for the wine of the vintage. Made from a blend of 65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Merlot,12.8% ABV, pH 3.6. The harvest took place from September 30 - October 6. The yields were 30 hectoliters per hectare. Only 1,200 cases were produced this year. Drink from 2028-2065.

The 2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots from the Mugneret sisters is glorious, offering up a deep and complex bouquet of raspberry, plum, dark spice, wood smoke, black chocolate and grilled squab. The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has a succinct, focused bouquet replete with exquisite red cherry, cranberry, crushed stone and persimmon. The palate is very well balanced, displaying supple tannin and a patina of new oak awaiting to be assimilated, but there is real substance to this Les Cazetiers, and it fans out with confidence on the finish. Give this several years in bottle and you will possess a very serious and delicious Cazetiers. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Drink 2020-2035

As its name implies, this southerly facing vineyard lies in close proximity to the appellation of Pernand Vergelesses. Beautiful fragrant, rose petal, tayberry and wild alpine strawberry grace this wine which has a lovely delicacy to it thanks to fine, powdery tannins. Graceful, with a touch of tension on the finish.
