This fine vineyard was planted in 1956 and the domaine has a peach of a location mid-slope, facing south and southeast. A perfume of violet and mountain berries. Such a gracious and sensual style, with a charming volume of plumpness and richness and a soft sweetness on the finish. Delicious.

From southerly-exposed slopes (though the vines are orientated east), the 2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru has a simple but fairly perfumed nose with mulberry, cranberry and hints of brown spice. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins. The 2021 is harmonious with a mixture of red plum, white pepper and thyme towards the finish. What a lovely Savigny-les-Beaune. Drink 2024-2034.

50% whole bunch vinification. Now racked for bottling in November. Darkish purple. Why does the first sniff remind me of Bordeaux? Just a fleeting thought before the real bouquet starts to come out. Rich cherry with a blacker edge, while Claude suggests violets. Still, there is something slightly green underneath, adding a mild astringency. A little more weight than Fourneaux, medium persistence. Drink from 2025-2028.

The source of the fruit for this cuvée is a little different in 2021. Usually, the base of the wine comes from one of the village’s highest vineyards, Les Veroilles, which experienced serious frost, so this year the core of the fruit comes from the lower vineyards of Les Athets which were less affected. Deep cherry colour, aromas of boysenberry and freshly picked raspberry. Wonderfully refined and pure, with a great clarity of red fruit flavours.

The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from the top and bottom of the slope. It has a bright nose with raspberry and cranberry fruit, fine definition and good vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with judicious use of whole bunches. It has a gentle grip with quite a peppery finish. This is promising.

This is such a lovely lieu-dit on the border of Chambolle Musigny. There are just 3 hectares of village wine in Vougeot, of which Clos du Village is one, sitting next door to Clos de Vougeot and below Chambolle Les Amoureuses! In 2021, Ben actually has more wine as he took the complete vineyard this year! Damson and sloes, this gives the perfect mix between generous plush fruit and a direct sweet intensity. There is a feeling of restrained power and, this is so much more than a simple village wine. Lovely.

The 2021 Vougeot Clos de Village, which is mostly de-stemmed, has a slightly subdued bouquet compared to some of the other cuvées. The palate is medium-bodied with red cherry and strawberry fruit and fine tannins. It's more vivacious on the finish compared to the nose, which I suspect will open with time. Give it a couple of years in bottle.

Due to the size of the crop in 2021, Nicolas was left with little option but to blend four different Premiers Crus - Chanlins, Argillières, Jarollières and Chaponnières - into a single cuvée. The current release of this rarity, the 2012 Upper Tintara Vineyard 1891 Ancestor Vines Shiraz was produced in minute quantities (under 1,000 bottles) from a vineyard block planted by Thomas Hardy in 1891. Matured two years in second-fill barriques from DJ, it was then aged in bottle another seven years prior to release. It's still remarkably dark and youthful, with pungent scents of camphor, asphalt, star anise and blackberries emanating from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, it's dense and packed with substance, still tannic to some extent, with years ahead of it. Yes, it's 100% Shiraz, but in some ways, it's built more like a Cabernet, with a sense of reserve and coolness, accentuated by the lingering licorice notes on the long finish. Drink 2023-2040.

I was very fortunate to taste the only bottle of this vintage in the country and I understand that it is not yet released in Australia, so this is somewhat of a scoop. Given I only had a tasting sample-sized glass with which to make my notes so this is a somewhat cramped review, but I can tell you that this is yet another stellar interpretation of the vines which Thomas Hardy planted back in 1891. So deep, so closed and yet so refreshing, the power-to-weight ratio here is mind-blowing and the monastic control on the palate confounds any form of devotion I have ever heard of. By far the most introverted and centred AVS to date, at eight years old, this wine is refusing to budge, but there is so much potential here it is staggering. We are witnessing the birth of a vinous superstar, and with 2008 and 2010 in the back catalogue, and knowing just how serious the great 2012s are from other wineries in South Australia, I can safely say that I expect this wine to unfurl over the next two or three years into one of the finest Shiraz/Syrahs on the planet. As far as experiences go, my sip and a half took me on an even more fascinating journey than the near-perfect 2010 but, of course, I didn’t reach the destination. Nevertheless, I was overwhelmed with just how expressive and also how distinguished this wine felt on my palate and so it would be remiss of me to give it anything less than a perfect score. Andrew Hardy is a winemaking superstar in Australia. He is also a very experienced wine judge, having Chaired the Royal Adelaide Wine Show many times and my own, The Great Australian Red Show. Aside from his family’s famous vinous heritage, Andrew is most wellknown for crafting Petaluma (Adelaide Hills, Coonawarra and Clare Valley) and Knappstein (Clare Valley) wines, receiving extraordinary acclaim. Andrew is also among Australia’s most respected and influential wine industry leaders. A fifth-generation winemaker, he is the greatgreat-grandson of Thomas Hardy - the ‘Father of the South Australian Wine Industry’. Andrew is now into his fourth decade (he won’t thank me for this!) of making elite wine, and yet I think he is finally managing to craft near-perfect wines with every label he releases. Exacting standards and epic raw materials, coupled with a burning desire to encourage his vineyards to express themselves fully in the glass, make these wines which speak from the heart as well as from the elemental soils in his family vineyards. Interestingly, I tasted a handful of these wines with David Robert MW. Two of his expressions/impressions stood out – “You won’t taste a better bottle of wine this year” and also, “I was lucky to taste some ’82 and ’96 First Growths the other day, and this wine gives them a run for their money” (both comments refer to the 2010 vintage of Ancestor Vines Shiraz)! No self-respecting wine collector can declare their cellar complete without a few cases of these wines in their racks. I was very fortunate to taste the only bottle of this 2012 vintage in the country, and I understand that it is not yet released in Australia, so this is somewhat of a scoop. This is the first vintage in which the Barolo 'classico' becomes a Barolo del Comune di Verduno, in other words, a wine only from Verduno. Pliant and deep, the 2017 is striking right out of the gate. A wine of tremendous balance, the 2017 is a total pleasure to taste. Today the flavors are naturally quite primary, but there is so much to like. Bright red berry fruit, blood orange and spice punctuate the finish. Vineyard sites are Rivarocca, plus smaller pieces from Pisapola, Campasso, Rocche dell'Olmo and Boscato. Drink 2024 - 2037.

The palate is medium-bodied with a little oak to be subsumed on the entry (normal for this Grand Cru) with a broody and dense, quite muscular finish that will require several years to soften. Maybe the Clos de Vougeot and Bonnes-Mares demonstrate more personality at the moment? One for the long-haul. 2024 - 2042

A brooding and inexpressive nose reluctantly offers up attractively spiced aromas of dark cherry, raspberry and plenty of floral wisps. There is even better volume and mid-palate density to the solidly powerful and mineral-inflected medium weight plus flavors that possess much better balance and proportion, particularly on the focused and lingering finish. This is perhaps not quite as refined as it usually is but the intrinsic class of a fine Bèze is still present. Drink 2035+

The slightly higher vineyard location of Lavaux always allows its wines to maintain a degree of freshness, whatever the climatic conditions. This is a superb expression showing off the warmth of the year with its striking damson and blackberry fruit flavours. The real appeal however, is the line of freshness and minerality that flows through the wine. Precise and true to both Pinot Noir and its terroir. Outstanding.

This superb wine embodies the ethos of Domaine Serafin. Coming from two different plots in the appellation, one with vines of 70 years old and the other just over 100 years, it excelled in 2021. Bright garnet colour, a touch smoky, with deep savoury bramble fruits. A greater degree of exuberance and volume than the straight village cuvée. One of the top wines of the vintage and certainly amongst the very best we tasted during the primeur season. This is sensational. The brilliant bright red fruits rise above a smoky, spiced undertone. The initial succulent juicy flavours build and coat the mouth. A wine of huge breadth, there is so much fruit that it almost completely masks the tannic core that sits underneath. So layered and so, so long. Tremendous all round.

Waiting for the detail to come out, a wealth of fruit but this potentially powerful Richebourg remains opaque at the moment. Finishes on the wood.

The Giusto Notri is a beautiful Bordeaux blend, it resonates with everything we love in a left bank claret, but from the Tuscan coast. The blend is around 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cab Franc, with only 2500 cases produced. The cooling influence of the sea is instrumental in giving this wine a more refined, elegant and mineral style. There is serious depth and appeal here, and at approximately a third of the price of Sassicaia, it really is a sensational buy in my opinion.

The 2015 was an incredibly successful vintage, blessed with a perfect growing season, resulting in a wine with optimal ripeness while preserving freshness, exceptional intensity, depth and elegance. A true expression of the extreme beauty of their exceptional terroir. This is the most elegant and refined vintage I have seen of this wine. With ultra-refined tannin, the wine is dry, very clean, not minty at all, with very good tension and length, with a chalky, tasty, almost salty finish. Of course, the classical notes of cedar wood, black peppercorns and tobacco are there, but in a very subtle way. Super elegant. Drinking 2017-2027

Due to the very small crop in 2021, Paul had created a combined cuvée for us to taste rather than the normal tasting of the individual plots. Straight in and its quality immediately hits you! Shining purple colour, more red fruits than the traditional darker characters of some years. There is no ostentation here, it just quietly builds on the palate in a lovely unassuming way. The more one contemplates the wine, the more it shows. It totally delivers and shows why it is considered one of the Côte de Beaune’s greatest locations. It has more than just Grand Cru pretentions, it has all the classification’s qualities as well.

Lovely definition with a subtle briny note that emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a firm grip and moderate weight, though it is missing some amplitude towards the finish due to the severely reduced volume. We tasted the younger vines and the older vines separately, then the blend. The younger vines had a fine fresh medium deep raspberry fruit, with quite firm acidity, a limestone feel to the tannins, and a lightly ferrous touch. The old vines offered much more fruit on the nose, strawberry and raspberry, the tannins a little firmer but with much more fruit around them. As ever the blend seemed to give more of everything. A bright purple colour, and a weight of fruit on the nose with a depth of darker berry fruit. The balance between the fruit and the structure is just right, medium plus length. The tannin acid balance works well too. The 2021 Clos des Epeneaux will not be a monster but will have refinement. Drink from 2028-2035.

The 2018 Rauzan-Ségla is blended of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested from September 27 to October 11; Merlot from September 13-27; Cabernet Franc on September 28; and Petit Verdot from September 28-29. The wine has 14% alcohol and aging is anticipated to be 18 months in barriques, 65% new. Deep purple-black in color, it comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant notes of warm plums, crème de cassis, Black Forest cake and candied violets with hints of mocha, Indian spices and fragrant earth plus a waft of crushed rocks. Full-bodied, multilayered and sporting a lot of freshness and tension in the mouth in spite of all its decadent perfumed black fruits, it has a firm, finely grained frame and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant. Rauzan-Ségla is here proclaiming its right to be considered among the wines of the year in Margaux. In the Chanel stable, Canon has had the edge for me in the past few vintges, but here Rauzan Ségla comes roaring back with its mix of elegance and confidence matched by perfectly ripe, Cabernet-dominant fruit. There's a slightly higher percentage of Merlot than usual - partly because it was so good this year and partly because the concentration in the Cabernets took the yields down (a real feature of the vintage, they were at 32hl/ha here). The Merlot adds flesh through the mid-palate, which is followed by freshly crushed mint on the finish which adds precision and lift. Great quality. 3.8pH. 2% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. Enticing on the nose with spicy berry fruit notes and nicely integrated oak, there is a cool feel about this wine which points to careful balance and reasonable alcohol – they got the picking dates just right. Composed of 72.3% Merlot and 27.7% Cabernet Franc, harvested September 20 to October 8, the 2018 Quintus is deep purple-black in color and rolls sensuously out of the glass with very pure, perfumed notes of lilacs, lavender, plum preserves and chocolate-covered cherries giving way to notes of spice cake, cardamom, fenugreek and fragrant soil plus a touch of unsmoked cigars. The full, rich, seductive palate provides layer upon layer of perfumed black fruits and spicy nuances with a firm yet soft frame and oodles of freshness to lift the long finish. Beautifully done.

Antonio Galloni, April 2019, Score: 89-92
The 2018 Quintus is dark, powerful and super-concentrated, with a real sense of textural breadth and amplitude. Dark fruit, chocolate, spice, new leather and licorice add to a feeling of power and gravitas. The 2018 is an especially somber, brooding Quintus. The 15.2% alcohol is at the upper end for 2018 and is very much felt in the wine. Here, too, I am quite interested to see how things turn out after élevage.

This is very reserved with blueberry, cedar and shaved-chocolate character. Medium to full body and firm, lightly chewy tannins that are polished and pretty. Energetic finish at the end.

The 2019 Beau-Séjour-Bécot just lacks a bit of energy on the nose, dusky black fruit, sous-bois and dry tobacco. Old school. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-hewn tannins, very well balanced, lovely purity with a caressing and persistent finish. Classy winemaking. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. 2025-2050

Antonio Galloni, Januray 2023, Score: 96
The 2019 Beau-Séjour-Bécot is a powerful, explosive wine. Dark fruit, chocolate, cured meats and earthy notes lend quite a bit of depth. Compared with its neighbors, Beau-Séjour-Bécot is dark, broad and broodingly tannic, sometimes more power than finesse. There is plenty of character, though. That much is evident. Beau-Séjour-Bécot speaks with authority as it commands attention. 2031-2049

Tasted blind. Simple colour. Easy, relaxed, rich and round. Already fun to drink with good balance even without much evolution or nuance. Polished tannins. Sophisticated winemaking. Long. The opposite of showy.

The 2019 Beau-Séjour Bécot has turned out nicely, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, wild berries, raw cocoa, spices and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's deep and layered, with a rich mid-palate that's underpinned by succulent acids and powdery tannins. Located opposite Château Canon on Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau, there's some significant restructuring going on in the vineyards here, and in the cellar, foudres, amphorae and once-used barrels complement new oak: the result is the best wines this estate has produced in the modern era.

To quote winemaker Marielle Cazaux, “Never has the blending of a vintage been more straightforward”. The blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc is perfectly integrated. This wine has so much excitement and energy, and the floral nose is scented with violets and blueberry. The palate is noticeably luscious and opulent, but also composed thanks to its refined structure. There is a wonderful flow of freshness throughout and the tannins are perfectly in line with the volume of fruit. I am a sucker for this wonderful estate’s wine and the silky, poised and beautifully layered 2019 lives up to all my expectations.

Neal Martin, June 2020, Score: 97-99
The 2019 La Conseillante was picked 17-20 September for the Merlot and 30 September and 7 October for the Cabernet Franc. Yields were low at just 34hl/ha. The Grand Vin is aged in 70% new French oak, 27% one-year old barrels and 3% in clay amphora. Limpid purple in colour, this has an exquisite bouquet with pixelated blackberry and raspberry scents, laced with pressed iris and a touch of graphite. It reminds me of a less powerful version of the 2010 when I tasted that from barrel. The palate is very smooth with ebullient red and black fruit on the entry, then it tapers in a little, towards a very cohesive, satin-textured middle. This is definitely one of the purest La Conseillante wines that I have encountered from barrel. It delivers a subtle spiciness towards the finish with hints of tobacco and clove on the persistent aftertaste. Winemaker Marielle Cazaux and her team have conjured a magnificent Pomerol here. Antonio Galloni, January 2022, Score: 98
The 2019 La Conseillante is elegant and nuanced, just as it was from barrel. All of the freshness and energy that was present en primeur comes through in the bottle. There is an element of sophistication, of reserve, that needs time to be fully expressive. The 2019 is a wine of linear precision more than volume or density. It should age exquisitely for many years to come. 2029-2049

Antonio Galloni, June 2020, Score: 96-98
General Manager and Winemaker Marielle Cazaux turned out one of the jewels of the vintage with the 2019 La Conseillante. Fresh, nuanced and beautifully perfumed, the 2019 is a total stunner from the very first taste. What impresses me most about the 2019 is its freshness and vivacity, both so rare in 2019 in Pomerol. Inky dark fruit, lavender, mint and spice all build effortlessly. At 16%, the Cabernet Franc is particularly expressive, especially in the wine's aromatics. The 2019 is a wine of pure and total sensuality. Don't miss it. Harvest took place from September 17 to 20 for the Merlot and September 30 to October 7 for the Cabernet Franc, picking only in the early morning to preserve freshness in the fruit. In the cellar, Cazaux opted for a reduced number of pumpovers but over longer periods of time. Malolactic fermentation was done mostly (80%) in steel. Aging is in 70% new oak, 27% once-used barrels and 3% amphora, and is projected to be 16-17 months.

Wine Advocate, June 2020, Score: 96-98
The 2019 La Conseillante is a blend of 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc, harvested from the 17th of September to the 7th of October at yields of 34 hectoliters per hectare. It is being aged in 70% new French oak barrels, 27% second fill barrels and 3% amphora. The alcohol this year is 14.5% with a pH of 3.67. Very deep purple-black colored, it comes bounding out of the glass with all the energy of a new puppy, featuring notes of warm plums, wild blueberries and freshly crushed black cherries with hints of licorice, molten chocolate, violets, woodsmoke and tar plus a waft of lavender. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with layer upon layer of black and blue fruits with loads of floral sparks and a very fine-grained, silt-like texture, finishing with incredible freshness and a provocative mineral edge. La Conseillante's signature perfume, purity and restrained power shine through with amazing clarity and style this vintage.

Decanter, June 2020, Score: 97
Deeply coloured, high aromatics with iris and violets, extremely focused with savoury fruits - a character that I have found in the Cabernet Francs in this vintage. It has an excellent grip that takes hold from the first moment and carries you through building tannins. A lovely tactile wine and an austere finish, signs that this will age for decades. The chocolate of Pomerol comes in on the end, but you have to wait for it, the beginning is savoury blueberry and raspberry fruit. Harvest September 17 to 21, taking in all the Merlot in four days, quite unusual but they knew rain was coming and wanted it to be in; they pick only in the morning to keep freshness, then Cabernet Franc September 30 and again one day October 7 (the drought slowed ripening more of the Cab Franc). A yield of 34hl/ha. Drinking Window 2027 - 2043

Jancis Robinson, June 2020, Score: 17.5
Deep purple-crimson hue. Plenty of depth and intensity on the nose with morello cherry and floral (violet) notes. Palate hits a perfect pitch of ripeness, the fruit ripe but juicy and refreshing. Solid but refined tannins provide a firmness and persistence on the finish. Offers gravity and charm combined. Drink 2027-2042 (JL)

Lilacs and violets permeate the air before finding bitter chocolate, forest leaf, truffle, black raspberry, plum liqueur and black cherry juice. This wine is drenched in enough velvet to be classified as heart stopping! In fact, when tasting this with Marielle Cazaux, the director, over Zoom, I accidentally blurted out, "Holy F..K!" Yes, this is that good. This is pure bottled decadence that hits all your pleasure buttons. If you are seeking a deal closer, this Dionysian wine is the right choice! This is in serious contention for one of the wines of the vintage. The wine is a blend of 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14.5% alcohol with 3.67 pH and is aging in 70% new French oak barrels, although 3% of the harvest is aging in amphora. The harvest took place September 17-20 for Merlot and September 30-October 10 for the Cabernet Franc.

William Kelley, April 2022, Score: 99
The 2019 La Conseillante is performing brilliantly and rivals the 2016 as Marielle Cazaux's finest vintage at this leading Pomerol estate to date. Wafting from the glass with striking aromas of raspberries, plums, violets, raw cocoa, sweet soil tones and licorice, framed by a deftly integrated touch of classy new oak, it's full-bodied, ample and enveloping, its broad attack segueing into a seamless, layered mid-palate that's vibrant and concentrated, framed by powdery tannins and lively acids, before concluding with a long, saline finish.
