An up and coming Pomerol property, Feytit Clinet produced a delicious 2005. Very concentrated, it offers layer-upon-layer of mouth-filling fruit balanced by ripe tannins and perfect acidity. Drink 2012 - 2020+.

  • Robert Parker, April 2008, Score: 93

This estate is coming to life again after a long period of mediocrity. The deep ruby/purple-hued 2005 Feytit Clinet is performing brilliantly, offering up notes of chocolate-covered blackberries, licorice, incense, and notions of earth as well as oak. A 1,600-case blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, from a 15-acre vineyard situated near Trotanoy, the 2005 is full-bodied and powerful with sweet but substantial tannin, good acidity, and a long finish. It will benefit from 5-6 years of bottle age, and should improve over the following two decades. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030.

  • Robert Parker, April 2007, Score: 91-93

Feytit Clinet, a small 15+ acre vineyard situated between Trotanoy and Latour a Pomerol, is beginning to make noises about serious quality since the owners took full control of the viticulture and winemaking. The 2005 (a 1,600-case blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc) may be the finest wine I have yet tasted from this estate. It boasts a deep ruby/purple hue along with notes of black raspberries, mocha, sweet cherries, camphor, and a hint of licorice. Medium to full-bodied and fleshy, with good underlying structure, sweet tannin, and present but unobtrusive acidity, this beauty should be consumed between 2011-2025.

  • Robert Parker, April 2006, Score: 91-93

As with so many other estates in this vintage, this is the finest effort yet made at Feytit-Clinet. A blend of primarily Merlot (95%) with a dollop of Cabernet Franc, it exhibits a dense purple color along with lovely aromas of sweet licorice interwoven with truffles, black raspberries, blackberries, and subtle oak. Well-textured, with beautiful purity, full body, and impressively integrated acidity as well as tannin, this winner should be at its peak between 2010-2025.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 06, Score: 17.5

Very bright and dark. Sweet, heady flowers - lilies? - on the nose. Quite exotic and distinctive. Extremely jagged and youthful for the moment. Should get there but will need a LOT of time. Not for classicists. Drink 2015-25.

  • Wine Spectator, April 2006, Score: 89-91

Lots of licorice, floral and blackberry aromas. Full-bodied, with soft, velvety tannins and a medium finish. Very well done. Perhaps best ever.

Producer

Château Feytit-Clinet

It took us 5 attempts to finally find this discreet "château", but once we did we soon realised it was worth our while. A standout amongst its similarly priced peers.

Region

Pomerol

The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
