  • Goedhuis, December 2012

The grandest of all the Grand Cru vineyards in Chablis, (although slightly reserved and closed at this early stage, something one would expect for a wine of such pedigree) this is an incredibly complete wine. It has real breeding, powerful and structured whilst always remaining poised. There is richness and weight with the strong earthy undertones that one expects in the very best of Chablis. Top class.

  • Burghound, October 2013, Score: 93

A ripe but still relatively classic nose is composed of smoky mineral reduction, acacia blossom and soft citrus nuances and the citrus character is also reflected by the large-scaled and overtly powerful flavors. There is an intense stoniness to the exceptionally clean, crisp and bone dry finish that delivers outstanding length. This is perhaps the closest to an old school Chablis as there is in the range and I particularly like the oyster shell nuances. Note that while there is a touch of finishing wood it will probably be integrated in relatively short order. Drink 2019+

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2013, Score: 16.5+

Very introvert. Not much aromatic expression but there is a lot hunkered down for future development. For the money, I'd go for one of the premiers crus. Lots of substance. 13% Drink 2017-2025

It is quite something to be the 14th generation of your family making wines in the same town since 1620. Unsurprisingly over this 400-year period, the Droins have built up a sizeable 26-hectare estate and an enviable portfolio of appellations from both Grands and Premiers Crus within the Chablis region. Benoît joined his father at the estate in 1999 at the age of 24, and for the last decade has assumed total control. During this period, he has continued the family’s respect for their fine terroir and soil but has quietly adjusted the winemaking style. The use of oak is less prevalent today than in his father Jean-Paul’s time, resulting in a greater terroir identity to the domaine’s wines and a mineral drive and edge. At the risk of testing his natural modesty, Benoît is very firmly positioning himself and the estate as one of Chablis’s greats. Regularly achieving top spot in blind tastings, in our view his brilliance is unsurpassed today.Read less

Region

Chablis

Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
