  • Neal Martin, December 2015, Score: 89-91

The 2014 Meursault 1er Cru Santenots has a well defined bouquet with touches of grilled walnut and hazelnut developing on the nose. The palate is fresh and rounded, with hints of tropical fruit in the background kept on a leash by the acidity with fine precision on the finish. Probably more approachable than other Meursault that I have tasted, yet it has the substance to last. A Meursault fit for a queen! Drink 2017-2029

(from a parcel of 30+ year old vines in Les Plures). Soft reduction and gentle wood notes currently suppress the underlying fruit but there is both good freshness and richness to the caressing and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sap. This persistent and well-balanced effort is not particularly complex at present but a few years of bottle age should help in that regard and my range assumes that more will develop. Drink 2019+

  • Jancis Robinson, November 2015, Score: 16.5

Mid intensity nose. Sweet start and floral, rich and fresh. Good vibrancy. Some breadth and piercing. Drink 2019-2026

  • Sarah Marsh, December 2015, Score: 18

Richness, even a slight opulence, to the fruit. Rounded full-bodied and dense..the freshness comes up under the fruit…and refreshes the finish. Very concentrated. It is bunched and tense under the rich fruit. It is glossy, but finishes on a citrus cooler note.

Arriving at the family Château in Volnay and standing in the famed Clos des Ducs overlooking the village and its other 1er crus below always gives me a huge thrill. Region

Meursault

Meursault is the first great white wine area that one stumbles upon on leaving Beaune. Unlike other white dominated appellations in Burgundy, Meursault has no grand cru vineyards. It nonetheless has significant flair and power which make up for this deficiency. Indeed, if tasted blind some of these wines could even surpass other Burgundian grand crus. They are no fainting daisies. This may partially be due to Meursault's lower water table which enables the roots to delve deep in the soil picking up many trace minerals and which further stresses the vines. In addition, the cellars are more profound and cooler, enabling long fermentations, which increase complexity and longevity. Some interesting red wines are also made.
