  • Goedhuis, November 2018

Along with 1er Cru Les Fuées this is Chambolle’s highest and coolest vineyard location. A deep purple colour, this is full of cranberry and redcurrant fruit. Very poised with a linear tannic drive. A layered wine with a long complex finish.

  • Neal Martin, September 2021, Score: 92

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru is quite high-toned and slightly lactic on the nose, featuring strawberry cheesecake and vanilla; the oak is a little strong here. The palate is medium-bodied and quite structured, with firm, grippy tannins and a granular texture. It builds nicely toward the solid, somewhat brawny finish, so afford it two to three years in bottle. Very promising. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. Drink 2024 - 2042

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 91-93

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has the most backward bouquet of all the crus from Ghislaine-Barthod, but given rigorous aeration, it opens beautifully in the glass to reveal Dorset plum, hoisin, orange sorbet and mineral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with great depth on the entry, featuring a mixture of red and black fruit, red peppercorns, orange peel and a tang of marmalade toward the persistent finish. Expect this to land at the top of my banded score once in bottle. 2021 - 2040

  • Burghound, January 2019, Score: 92-94

Interestingly this is aromatically quite similar to the Véroilles if perhaps just a bit more elegant and layered. The racy, intense and overtly mineral-driven medium weight flavors possess almost painful punch along with chiseled delineation on the austere, serious and compact yet superbly long finish. This very firm effort is not seductive or especially refined at present but the power and drive are most impressive. Drink 2032+

  • Decanter, December 2018, Score: 95

Another well sited premier cru, at the same altitude as Bonnes Mares, Ghislaine Barthod's parcel runs to 0.82ha and is one of the bigger cuvées in her cellar. There's a cooling effect from the combe above the village here, producing a wine that's savoury, focussed and taut with a chalky mineral core. It’s unusually fresh for a 2017. Exquisitely pure, ethereal, and terroir-driven, Ghislaine’s wines also have wonderful mineral raciness. The domaine was originally created by Marcel Noëllat, Ghislaine’s maternal grandfather. After attending viticultural college in Beaune in the 1980s, she began assisting her father, Gaston Barthod, at the family domaine. Her straightforward, no-nonsense approach helped introduce a sorting table, extended lees contact, a gentle cold soak before fermentation, and domaine bottling. All this enabled greater control over the quality of fruit, texture of tannins, and purity of flavours. The results have been year upon year of magical masterpieces from Chambolle Musigny. Along with her partner Louis Boillot, today she is joined in the vineyard and cellar by their son, Clément.Read less

Region

Chambolle Musigny

The wines of Chambolle Musigny are like no other. They can be superbly delicate, yet mindblowingly complex. Of all the northern Burgundy appellations, they are the most ethereal, and as a result the most feminine. Most of the Chambolle Musigny vineyard area is encompassed in its Village and Premier Cru appellations including the robust Beaux Bruns, the splendidly mineral Le Cras and the poised yet powerful Les Amoureuses. It produces only two Grand Crus - the round and rich Bonnes Mares which it shares with Morey St. Dénis, as well as what could be described as the Stradivarius of grand crus, Musigny.
