  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 95-97

The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru is matured entirely in new oak with 40-50% whole-bunch fruit. It displays sublime purity on the nose, which offers layers of brambly red fruit mixed with crushed stone, pressed rose petals and freshly tilled soil. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins and a perfect line of acidity. Tighter than the Mazis-Chambertin, with a precise and quite conservative finish. This is another profound Chambertin from Arnaud Mortet. 2024 - 2050

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 92-94

An impressively layered and softly menthol-inflected nose is comprised by notes of liqueur-like poached plum, forest floor and earth. There is a lovely sense of energy to the sleeker, rich, round and more energetic medium weight flavors that possess excellent intensity while retaining very good precision despite the solid richness and volume. While this is quite firmly structured, the density of sap should allow this to be approached after only 5 to 7 years. Drink 2035+

  • Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 95-97

The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru really merits its place in the hierarchy this year, unfurling in the glass with a complex bouquet of wild berries, plums and peonies complemented by nuances of blood orange, potpourri, cinnamon and smoked meats. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, supple and beautifully complete, with a layered and concentrated core, ripe acids and powdery tannins, concluding with a long and perfumed finish. In textural finesse and incipient complexity as well as in depth and dimension, the Chambertin possesses an extra dimension.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 96-99

Three barrels made. Glowing purple, with up to a half whole bunch vinification and all matured in new wood. Discreet yet gorgeous nose. This dances on the palate, as Arnaud has such a fine hand with whole bunches, which add an ethereal touch to a wine that will always be solidly grounded. A sublime and serene finish.

For many years, Dénis Mortet worked passionately to create one of the most sought after domaines in Burgundy. He learned about winemaking while working with his father Charles, a cousin of Charles Rousseau. From the early 1990s he built his vineyard area to almost 10 hectares dispersed throughout Gevrey Chambertin, Chambolle Musigny, Vougeot, Fixin and Marsannay. His exceptional determination and self-criticism drove him in pursuit of the holy grail of Gevrey Chambertin. Year-in and year-out, he aimed for higher and higher ideals believing that there was always better, always purer. Sadly, he has not lived to see his results. After his tragic death in 2006 at the age of just 51, his son, Arnaud, took over vineyard management and winemaking. Since then, this domaine has been soaring to ever-greater heights. In Dénis’s era the wines had been admired for their opulence, but in the past decade Arnaud has redefined the Mortet style as one that ascends towards a pinnacle of finesse and elegance. The dextrous handling of each parcel means the Fixin and Marsannay are as interesting talking points as the Lavaux St Jacques and Clos de Vougeot. The domaine has forged a reputation for organic viticulture par excellence, and the dedicated work in the vineyards is abundantly clear in the cellar. Arnaud has an astonishing gift for managing whole bunch fruit and matching new oak to his pure, crystalline wines.Read less

Region

Chambertin

Gevrey Chambertin lies well to the north of the Cote de Nuits. It has no less than 9 grand cru vineyards and the most famous of these is Chambertin. Often considered the greatest of all red Burgundies for its complexity, power and intensity, Chambertin's fine wines are unsurprisingly rare and are priced accordingly. They also need years to develop to their full potential, but are undoubtedly worth the wait.
