    The 2018 Saint-Aubin Derrière Chez Edouard "Haut Densité" 1er Cru has a beautifully defined bouquet with wet limestone/petrichor scents infusing the green apple and pear scents; very focused and intense. The palate is vibrant and precise on the entry. Olivier Lamy told me that these were the best grapes he picked during the harvest, over three passes, and that tells in this wonderful Saint-Aubin. 2022 - 2040

Otherwise there is excellent density to the muscular and quite serious flavors that brim with minerality while displaying outstanding persistence on the chiseled and equally bone-dry finale.     Pale lemon in colour with a slight but noble reduction. There is a total explosion of fruit behind. What a brilliant balance here. Cool yet concentrated, marvellous tension but fully ripe. This tastes like a truly great white burgundy without aping one of the other, more senior appellations.

Region

Saint Aubin

Due west of Puligny and Chassagne lies the little, picturesque village of St. Aubin. With the neighbouring village of Gamay, it produces 2/3 white wine and 1/3 red wine over 230 hectares of vines of which over 3/4 are premier cru. It was one of the last appellations created in only 1970 but has since created an excellent reputation for good value well made Burgundy that can replicatePuligny. Some of the most expressive vineyards are En Remilly and Les Murgers des Dents de Chien.
