  • Goedhuis, July 2022

A superbly thought provoking wine, which teases you on the palate. Initially it seems shy in character, but it slowly builds as all the flavours of wild alpine fruit flavours unfold. The tannins are silky and have a fine sandstone edge to them. The finish confirms this as a bright and vivacious wine: it persists on the palate for a great deal of time.

From vines planted in 1905. A bright and gorgeous purple. This wine is undeniably super-sensual and shows no sign of being cooked, as far as the nose is concerned. Everything on the palate seems very tightly wound. Crunchy red fruit and acidity to finish, granitic tannins inside the fruit as in 2009, with a sensual volume across the top. A vin de very long garde. So much complexity to come out here. Peaches, plums, raspberries, blood orange – what else? Add a fifth star if you prefer wines in a richer style than classical Burgundy. This is certainly going to have an exciting future. 14.5%. Drink from 2035-2050. 4 stars

Producer

Laurent Ponsot

Laurent Ponsot is one of Burgundy’s most internationally renowned winemakers. In 2017 he formally left his family domaine in Morey St Denis, and struck out on his own with a new winemaking facility in Gilly-lès- Cîteaux from where he now runs his solo project, started in 2015, full-time. He had been instrumental in Domaine Ponsot’s rise to fame, and had built a reputation as a maverick winemaker with his unique style that combined late harvesting, destemming, and complete aversion to new oak in the cellar. His wines are concentrated and long lived, and have won him admirers the world over. He is a passionate campaigner and prominent activist in the fight against fake wine on the secondary market. Having left his family domaine in the hands of his sisters, Laurent is joined by his son, Clément, at his new project, and together they are continuing to make their hugely exciting wines. Much of the fruit comes from his share of the family vineyards that remained with him after his departure, whilst the new project has given him the opportunity to explore new appellations.

Region

Clos Saint-Denis

Tucked between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, and sharing the same stratum of limestone, Morey-St-Denis is unfairly less celebrated than its better known neighbours. It boasts five Grand Crus, including Clos-St-Denis. Slightly lighter than Clos-de-la-Roche, Clos Saint-Denis' wines balance delicacy, finesse and wonderful Pinot fruit - the quintessential Grand Cru of Morey-St-Denis.
