  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, April 2026, Score: 91-93

“The greatest Cantemerle ever produced” Pierre-Alexandre proudly exclaimed, and who are we to disagree? The first wine made in their impressive new winery, and the improvement is already evident. Soft creamy raspberries and plums, with a gentle seasoning of spice. There’s a pleasing bitterness on the tip of the palate that keeps the wine really inviting and moreish – you can’t help but go back for another taste. Brilliant lift on the finish. Really rather accomplished.

  • Neal Martin, May 2026, Score: 91-93

The 2025 Cantemerle has a pretty nose with violet and iris flower-infused black fruit, very well defined, the oak very well integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very well balanced, impressive weight and cohesive, with more precision on the finish than I have noticed on previous vintages of Cantemerle. I appreciate the sapidity here, a moreish Haut-Médoc in the making, and I look forward to revisiting this in bottle. Drink 2031-2050

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2026, Score: 91-93

The 2025 Cantemerle is terrific. Plush, deep and quite powerful, Cantemerle has a lot to offer. Dark red fruit, leather, cedar, tobacco and dried herbs are all dialed up. Cabernet Sauvignon drives the blend, which is very much in evidence in the wine's savory intense and structure. There's a lot of wine here. Drink 2030-2043.

  • Jancis Robinson, May 2026, Score: 17/20

71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot. 32 hl/ha. Cask sample. Fragrant, dark-fruit nose. Elegant texture and tannins with nothing forced. Bright and juicy with persistence on the finish. Harmonious. Drink 2030-2040

Captures the austerity that you expect and want during En Primeur, wet stones and graphite, plenty of elegance and balance, measured acidities that give Left Bank typicity, a ton of ageing potential and curls of gunsmoke and flowers. Very pretty, very enjoyable, impressive. Yield 32 hl/ha. 35% new oak. First vintage in new cellars.

Despite its classic claret spirit, it has an unusual connection to vineyards thousands of miles away. In the early 1980s, much of Cantemerle's Cabernet Franc was changed to Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot by top grafting. Mexican viticulturalists, specialists in this field, were flown in from the Napa Valley to carry out the procedure. Quite an extraordinary project for a ‘mere' Haut Médoc.Read less

Region

Haut-Médoc

The Haut-Médoc is an appellation within the Médoc that stretches along the left bank of the Gironde from Blanquefort in the south to the north of Bordeaux. The region encompasses the more famous communes of St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux. Following the 1855 classification many of its most famous estates were classified and scored as first, second, third, fourth or fifth growths. This was based on their social and commercial positions at the time. Most of these classed growths use the village appellation name, such as Pauillac. However five of these classed growths fell outside a village appellation so take the name Haut-Médoc. Many of the vineyards which are classified as Haut-Médoc may actually also be referred to as Cru Bourgeois wines. These wines have lower permitted yields and so offer great value for money.
