  • Neal Martin, November 2022, Score: 86-88

The maiden 2021 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Rouge comes from three parcels totaling 2.5 hectares, 85% from the lieu-dit of "Piece Dame Marie". It has a nicely controlled bouquet with brambly red fruit and dried rose petal. Perhaps it needs a little more intensity? The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fresh and vibrant with a mineral-driven finish. Fine.

  • Wine Advocate, January 2023, Score: 86-88

From clay-rich soils opposite Cathiard's house, the generic 2021 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits (which enters the portfolio in this vintage) exhibits aromas of smoky plums, sweet berries and orange zest. Medium-bodied, seamless and bright, with powdery tannins and a succulent core of fruit, it will drink well young.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2022, Score: 85-87

Grown on Heavier clay based soils in the village of Villers Lafaye, 85% from La Piece Dame Marie 2.50 hectares in all. Medium crimson purple colour. The bouquet shows good fruit ripeness, and in deed there are some plummy notes along with ripe raspberry on the palate, with a saline touch at the end. Dark with a bitter edge perhaps?

Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region

Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits

Located at the top of the slopes and on the plateau above the celebrated villages of the Cotes de Nuits a dozen or so villages can claim this appellation. Given their altitude full ripeness is not guaranteed every year, so Hautes-Cotes status is only awarded after tasting. Principally reds from Pinot Noir, with a smattering of whites, these wines can be delicious and excellent value from the best vineyard sites.
