  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

The last of St Aubin’s Premiers Crus as you leave it heading northwest, Les Castets is perfectly positioned to support Damien’s theory of the benefits of appellation’s cooler location, whilst benefitting from a healthy southerly exposure. A fragrance of melons and apricots. A confident, free flowing style, with creamy toffee infused notes and rewarding richness, harmonised by its linear precision on the finish. Classy.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 90-92

The 2023 Saint-Aubin Les Castets 1er Cru comes from two south-facing parcels of younger vines, usually the first harvested in the appellation. It is a little richer on the nose than the domain's other cuvées, with hints of tropical fruit initially, although these ebb away with aeration to reveal more of its terroir. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and a creamy texture with dried honey, ginger and nectarine notes. Very composed and lace-like on the finish, this is a wine that will be difficult to resist in its youth.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2024, Score: 89-91

Damien reports that Castets, formerly a red wine site, starts the growing season late and ripens early. Less bouquet here. Chiselled on the palate, very white indeed, medium length.

Their strict principles of using only natural yeast, having a slow, cool fermentation and little ‘débourbage' (draining the juice fromits sediment) contributes to their pure, fresh flavours and impeccable balance. The domaine is now run by brothers Pierre-Yves, Damien and Joseph who took over from their semi-retired father several years back. The "changing of the guard" has had little effect on the wines. The only notable difference is less stirring of the lees in order to retain the wines' mineral undertones. And as aresult, they are as delicious and sincere as ever.Read less

Region

Saint Aubin

Due west of Puligny and Chassagne lies the little, picturesque village of St. Aubin. With the neighbouring village of Gamay, it produces 2/3 white wine and 1/3 red wine over 230 hectares of vines of which over 3/4 are premier cru. It was one of the last appellations created in only 1970 but has since created an excellent reputation for good value well made Burgundy that can replicatePuligny. Some of the most expressive vineyards are En Remilly and Les Murgers des Dents de Chien.
