  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, September 2025

A blend of 6 vineyards, providing a wonderful balance and complexity across these sites. Deft use of oak, now 20% new, gives an inviting spicy character to the nose that you can’t wait to dive into. A plethora of different fruit expressions, with some pithy lemon as well as sliced white peach. The unmistakable Kumeu struck match is there, but works wonderful with the rich fruit. There are delicate white flowers that sit on the top of the palate, all of which are held together with a refreshing, long mineral drive. Simply divine and unbelievable for the price.

  • Jancis Robinson, September 2025, Score: 17

High-toned nose then rich lemon-barley-water flavours. And real grip on the end. No hurry to drink this. Lots of concentration and masses of potential. Still youthful! Lots to chew on. Worth waiting until at least 2026 before drinking but it's already approachable. Drink: 2025-2035

The 2024 Estate Chardonnay is floral and tightly coiled, with a scratched lime backbone. It's not as complex as the Ray's Road tasted alongside, yet it's utterly composed and restrained. It is mineral and very good indeed. This was tasted as a tank sample prior to filtration and bottling

Producer

Kumeu River

Kumeu River is one of the longest established and most recognised producers in New Zealand. Founded in 1944 by Mick Brajkovich, a Croatian immigrant, the estate was one of the early pioneers in Auckland that helped establish the country as an excellent wine producing area. Today, second and third generations work the 30 hectares of vines planted on clay and limestone soils. Winemaker Michael Brajkovich, who was also New Zealand’s first Master of Wine, harvests all the grapes by hand and uses traditional Burgundian methods such as barrel fermentation. Kumeu River's Chardonnays have won many accolades the world over. From their entry level Chardonnay to their single vineyard wines, which have been mistaken by top critics for some very smart Meursaults, Chassagnes and Pulignys, they represent fantastic value for money.
