Luxurious, polished and stylish, but with a firm structure and masses of blackcurrantfruit. It will make splendidly uncomplicated drinking in 10 years or so. April 2001

  • Neal Martin, December 2022, Score: 97

As I found before, the 2020 Pichon Baron takes a while to open in the glass. Finally, it offers enticing blackberry and boysenberry fruit, peony and iris flower, hints of graphite and black truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, again, displaying outstanding symmetry and focus, fresh as a daisy with a strong and mineral-driven finish. Christian Seely and his team have overseen a splendid Pichon Baron for the ages. Blue-blooded Pauillac.

  • Robert Parker, June 2010, Score: 97

This is one of the great wines of the vintage, and certainly a candidate for one of the finest wines made at this estate under the management of Christian Seeley and proprietor AXA. Showing incredibly well at two tastings of 2000s, the wine has a dense bluish/purple color and a beautiful nose of incense, melted asphalt, and creme de cassis as well as hints of new saddle leather and licorice. It is superbly concentrated and very pure, with excellent texture and opulence. The acidity seems low, the tannin high but well-integrated. This is a compelling 2000 that is just closing in on its window of maturity and should stay there for at least 20 or more years. Bravo!

  • Robert Parker, April 2003, Score: 96

A spectacular effort, this is a profound Pichon Baron and clearly my favorite vintage of this wine since the 1989 and 1990. An inky purple color offers up notes of barbecue spices intermixed with new saddle leather, creme de cassis, melted licorice, creosote, and a hint of vanilla. The wine is full-bodied, tremendously concentrated, with sweet tannin and a seamless finish that goes on for close to one minute. This wine has great purity, tremendous texture, and fabulous upside potential. This is a prodigious 2000! Anticipated maturity: 2008-2028.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2001, Score: 18.5

Very deep purple. Toasty rich topnotes on a thoroughly glossy package of very ripe fruit. Good combination of liveliness and concentration. Full, sweet and succulent. Could only be faulted for being a bit too perfectly assembled - in fact that sweetness could win it a few blind tastings in its time. Made, like Ch Lynch Bages, by the talented Daniel Lhose who, unlike the Cazes family, still also works for AXA Millésimes.

  • Clive Coates, June 2001

70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc. 55% in grand vin. 50 hl/ha.Undoubtedly the best Pichon-Baron since 1990, and by a long way. Much more terroirpersonality here than in recent years. Very good colour. Rich, balanced and concentrated on the nose. Full body. Ripe tannins. Very good grip. This is cool, harmonious, complex and classy. Fine plus. From 2010.

Producer

Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

Along with Pichon Lalande, this estate was only one of two Pauillacs to be classified as a secondgrowth in 1855. They have rivalled each other ever since. However, Pichon Baron has remained inthe shadow of its more illustrious neighbour often enabling it to provide good value for money.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
