The 2023 Sémillon comes from three vineyards, with the oldest vines planted in 1902 and 61% planted in 1936. Matured in 70% new French oak for 14 months, it has a glorious bouquet with yellow plum, jasmine and wax resin scents, beautifully defined. The palate has a fine line of acidity, bright and fresh, lovely texture with a pithy finish.

Given the Semillon warm-up afforded by the four wines above, instead of this wine being the first in the set, it was, unusually, the fifth! This meant it didn’t have to pick any locks, since the door was wide open! Perhaps for this reason, this beauty slipped down a treat, with a seductive, wonderfully flattering welcome, and while it seemed almost too good to be true, I have no doubt it will tighten up over the next few months. It is interesting how some vintages show greater complexity and layers at different points in their evolution. Today, the Semillon Gris (some vines have mutated over time) portion looks spicy, white-pepper spiked, and ginger-lily smooched, bringing a lip-smacking immediacy to the experience. Yes, yes, and yes!

One of a handful of Cape whites that I buy most years and expect to cellar for a decade, this is a subtle, refined, early picked Franschhoek blend of Semillon and 3% Muscat d'Alexandrie. Deftly fermented in 70% new barrels, it has beguiling aromas of vanilla spice, cardamom and saffron, layers of tangerine, beeswax and fresh lemons and understated concentration. Drink date: 2027-2036

The 2023 Syrah comes from Swartland as usual, 60% whole bunch and aged for 18 months, 90% in Stockinger foudres and the rest in demi-muids. This has a perfumed nose with blueberry and black cherry scents, touches of pressed violet and peony emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Lovely balance, a tad more savoury than previous vintages with a ferrous/dried blood finish that lingers in the mouth. Very fine.

There is a massive 90% Porseleinberg portion in this 2023, with Goldmine making up a paltry 10%! I asked Marc why, and he answered with typical nonchalance. “It just worked well on the tasting bench!” While this source of fruit is most famous for making the Porseleinberg-labelled wine, the fruit used is typically firmer and more challenging. The fruit used for this wine is a little riper and more pliable, resulting in an irresistibly floral, more succulent initial burst of flavour. However, this open stance soon evaporates, and after the generous welcome, the predictable ‘crunch’ arrives, and the fruit slims down, gathers tension and gravitas. The finish alone marks this as one of the most fascinating and complex releases in years. If you are a lifelong fan, you ought to apply. If you are new to Boek-world, then perhaps pick another vintage! I say this because this is a super-intricate wine that requires prior knowledge, a degree of nerdiness, and, at the very least, membership in the Seven Chairs Club.

Gottfried Mocke makes this complex, layered Syrah with grapes from Porseleinberg and a 10% contribution from the Goldmine property, both in the Swartland. Fermented with 60% whole bunches and aged in foudres and 600-litre barrels, it's an intensely perfumed style, with engaging violet, rose petal and fynbos top notes, savoury tannins and layers of blackberry, liquorice and oolong tea. Drink date: 2028-38.

And we come to one of the finest wines ever to wear this badge! It is 30 years since Marc first received grapes from this vineyard to make his wines, and I cannot remember a more profound creation (and I have tasted them all). For a start, the nose is epically floral, crammed with an entire stationer’s emporium of pencil lead, and the oak is so delectable, I could eat a steak of it with a simple side salad. This is an intricate and yet astoundingly grand wine, and it soaks the palate in glory. The tannins are exquisite, and they will propel this wine forward for a heroic decade and then one more, but I am a sucker for swaggering, elementally charged red wines, so I would not wait until grey appears around this wine’s temples. Admittedly, you would need some decanter time if you were to venture into this wine’s world today, but I wouldn’t say no. I reckon its true peak will be in five or six years when you will be able to put it alongside every worthy Cabernet adversary on Earth, and it will simply smile back at.

Nearly all sourced from the farm in Franschhoek, this is the more floral of the two Boekenhoutskloof Cabernet Sauvignons in 2023, partly thanks to the presence of 14% Cabernet Franc in the blend. Carrying its 80% new oak lightly, it's leafy, scented and enticing, with filigree tannins, impressive underlying structure and acidity and dried herb, cassis and paprika flavours. Drink date: 2026-33.

Marc loves challenging vintages because they give him and his winemaker, Gottfried Mocke, more opportunities to show their God-given flair and encyclopaedic understanding of their fruit, the ferments, and the resulting extraction rates in the winery! This wine needed all their intuition and sleight of hand, given the challenging rainy conditions at vintage. But you can always depend on this dynamic duo, and they have made a remarkably forward wine with stunning, sleek fruit and a surprisingly plush outlook. In fact, you must drink this wine before the other three! Silky, layered, discreet, and charming, there is gentleness here, and it is irresistibly appealing.

Gottfried Mocke bled off 30% of the juice on this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc in 2023 to concentrate what was left behind in a lighter vintage. Curated in 60% new oak, it combines aromas of mint, fynbos ad coffee bean with a refined, sappy, nicely delineated palate of bramble, blueberry and blackcurrant leaf and a fresh, focused finish.
