  • Wine Advocate, February 2015, Score: 95/100

Aged for 24 months in oak, the gorgeous 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a brooding, dark wine with great aromatic purity. The fruit tones are rich and penetrating, spanning from plum, prune and cassis to spice cake, tar and black licorice. The wine's concentration is luscious and opulent. The oak element imparts lasting aromas of spice, toast and caramel but the wine already shows a good degree of integration that should help it continue its bottle evolution. Hold this wine until 2017. Argiano is one of the landmark estates of the Sant'Angelo in Colle subzone in the southern part of the appellation. A double line of perfectly aligned cypress trees marks the road that leads to this iconic Tuscan property. Argiano has had its share of ups and downs in recent years and was purchased by foreign investors a few years back. The wine style has remained the same and Argiano continues to make some of the best Brunello on the market today. Drink: 2017 - 2030. 95/100

Rising above the slopes of Sant'Angelo in Colle southeast of Montalcino stands a majestic 16thcentury villa which is home to the Argiano estate. In 1992, Countess Noemi Marone Cinzano acquired the estate which came with 100 hectares of superb vineyard land, olive groves and stone subterranean cellars as ancient as the villa itself.Shortly thereafter, she produced her first wines, including Solengo, a Super Tuscan blend ofCabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, which debuted in 1995 to exceptional reviews. Unlike other Super Tuscan estates which are located in and around Bolgheri and Maremma, Argiano benefits from the Montalcino microclimate. Its higher altitude provides warm winds that dry out any humid conditions and cooler nights allowing its natural acidity to be retained. A very polished estate with very polished wines.Read less

Region

Montalcino

Located southwest of Chianti, Montalcino came into its own in the late 1880s when local producer,Biondi-Santi, discovered a Sangiovese clone in his vineyard that was darker in colour than the rest. Its colour, however, was not its only attribute. It produced a wine with notable body, structure and length. He named it ‘brunello' meaning little dark one. This grape's genetic properties along with Montalcino's relatively temperate climate combine to create a wine stylistically different to that of more northerly Chianti. They are usually released approximately 5 years after the vintage following 2 to 4 years ageing in wood. The denomination of Riserva indicates a wine usually produced with more concentrated grapes than the traditional cuvéeand requires a minimum of one additional year of ageing.Today, Montalcino has become one of the most sought after appellations in the Tuscan region.
