  • Goedhuis, December 2017

The low production means that this wine has been aged in 100% new oak. On tasting, the fulsome ripe, sweet dark fruit, are enhanced by the oak. An earlier-drinking style with real appeal.

  • Burghound, January 2018, Score: 88-91

A more deeply pitched nose offers plenty of classic Gevrey character with its earth, humus, underbrush and sauvage characters, all of which can be found on the attractively textured, vibrant and solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors that possess fine depth and persistence. This fine villages should reward 5 to 8 years of cellar time. Drink: 2022+

  • Stephen Tanzer, January 2018, Score: 88-90

Good dark red. Lovely red cherry and raspberry aromas are lifted by floral and spicy high notes. Juicy and firmly built, offering noteworthy finesse of texture. Not a fleshy wine but boasts excellent acidity and inner-mouth tension without any hardness. Finishes with very good lift and pungency. Should make a very successful village wine. Only the estate's vines in their parcel in Les Crais were affected by frost.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2018, Score: 16

Light, easy nose. Something a little lolly about the fruit. Slightly bitter on the end. Drink 2022-2028

The Sérafin family are part of the establishment in Gevrey Chambertin. From when he took over from his father in the 1960 until his recent retirement, if you ever want to get in touch with Christian, you either had to call him as the rooster crowed in the morning or long after the sun had set. The rest of the time, he was working out in the vines or deep in his cellars. The domaine is now run by cousins Frédérique and Karine who are continuing the family tradition of making bold and structured wines. Their Pinots benefit from a period of bottle age and typically express fine tertiary characteristics. They do not fine or filter their wines, and only rack when necessary. Not shy of new oak, they use up to 50% on their straight Bourgogne and often 100% on the rest of their cuvées depending on the concentration. The wines tend to be ample and fleshy, and the richest ones need some cellaring in order to better integrate the spicy, cedarwood flavours.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
