Willi Schaefer is one of the smallest domaines in the Mosel, comprising a miniscule 4 hectares! Though they have been wine producers since the 16th century, they have only been bottling their own wines since the 1960s. The ever so delightful, Christoph is the next generation at the helm. Being a small domaine has many advantages such as knowing virtually every vine and being able to carry out all the vineyard treatments themselves as well as watching over each small vat of wine while either fermenting or ageing. The downside, of course, is that the quantities are incredible small, so allocations are tiny. Most of the vines are located in the tiny village of Graach, a stone’s throw away from Wehlen’s iconic Sonnenuhr (‘Sun Dial’) vineyard. Their two Devonian slate vineyards are Himmelreich, which is comprised of a lighter soil, and Domprobst, a deeper soil vineyard that is rich with stones. As a result, the wines from Domprobst tend to be a more powerful and mineral than the lacier, more fruit-forward Himmelreich. The Schaefer style is naturally appealing - clean with a notable purity of fruit and a wonderfully chiselled, yet gentle structure.Read less
