  • Goedhuis, April 2023, Score: 93-95

Under the new ownership of Jean-Hubert Moitry, but with Berenice Lurton still at the helm, the 2022 is an unctuously rich Barsac, redolent with tarte tatin, citrus and stone-fruits. Luscious in the mouth, the acidity is lower than previous years, but this is still in balance, with a beautiful aromatic lift towards the finish.

  • Neal Martin, April 2023, Score: 93-96

The 2022 Climens was tasted from a prepared sample, although the final blending has not been done - though it still represents around 95% of what will be the final wine. There were just two tries this vintage between 6 and 23 October, and there is 141g/L residual sugar. It has a fragrant bouquet with wild honey, peach skin and lemon curd, well-defined, though not as intense as previous vintages tasted at this stage. The palate is medium-bodied with a waxy/viscous opening and a fine bead of acidity, not tremendously deep but with fine delineation. With nougat, quince and almond notes, the 2022 is quite sweet and almost Riesling-like toward the finish that actually feels as if it has less than the aforementioned residual sugar level. This is a precise Climens. Drink 2028-2058

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 19+

With incredible butterscotch and barley-sugar flavours hovering under the glorious citrus and wildflower notes, this is a sensational wine, and the finish is prodigious, spiked with frisky acidity, which teases the sense for minutes. The density of fruit and scale of flavour is amazing, making this one of the sweet wines of the vintage.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2023, Score: 17.5

Golden hue. Fragrant but understated with mandarin, spice and vanilla notes. Rich but fresh and balanced. Bitter-botrytised notes and great persistence. Saline note on the finish. Elegance and finesse. (James Lawther MW). Drink 2027 – 2050.

  • Jane Anson, April 2023, Score: 93

Rich gold in colour, with intense crème caramel, apple tart, citron confit and apricot puree flavours, this has a silky texture and luscious appeal, low acidity, unusual for Climens, although a beautiful mint freshness gives a welcome cooling blash on the finish. 114g/l residual sugar, 4.1ph. 7.5hl/h yield. Harvest from October 6 to 23, spanning 9 days in total. New owner Jean-Hubert Moitry as of this vintage, with managing director Jerome Moitry. The winemaking team remains the same, overseen at least for now by Bérénice Lurton, and this En Primeur sample has been tasted the first time as a finished blend, not tasted direct from individual barrels as in the past. Drink 2023-2040.

Barsac

It is not an exaggeration to say that these are the greatest sweet wines in the world. They are the result of a serendipitous marriage of grape variety, location, annual weather conditions and human care and determination. The vineyards are located on the banks of the cool spring-fed Ciron river which, in autumn, flows into the warmer tidal Garonne and creates rolling evening mists which clothe the vines until the afternoon sun burns them off the following day. This cycle creates perfect conditions for the development of botrytis cinerea or noble rot, and the resulting grape juice is a super concentrated sweet, ambrosial nectar which makes the most heavenly and complex wines with extraordinary ability to age. In 1855 the wines were classified into first and second growths, with Ch d'Yquem rightly receivingits own super status of premier grand cru. Other stunning wines include Chx Sudiraut, Rieussec, Coutet and Climens. While seductively fragrant and sweet when young, if you can bear to wait, you will be amply rewarded with lusciously rich, exotically complex wine.
