The Monthly Six | March Recommendations

The rain is ending, and the sunshine that appeared last week gives us hope for warmer times to come. With that in mind, we’re excited to present this month’s edition of The Monthly Six for March, featuring a fresh selection of wines that provide instant enjoyment and are deliciously easy-drinking.

Perfect for spring parties: The Pieropan Soave and Waddesdon Rothschild Pinot Noir offer superb value at under £20 a bottle. An exceptional everyday choice: Snap up a fresh and lively Aligoté from Domaine Sylvain Cathiard, or a standout Pinot Noir from Oregon. Ready for Easter: Pair a classic Chablis 1er Cru with a Red Bordeaux Grand Cru ideal for cellaring or Easter feasts.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, May 2025

The grapes for this wine are sourced from hillside vineyards in the heart of the Soave Classico area, planted at 100–300 metres above sea level which gives wonderful freshness. Pear, lime zest and fresh green apple linger on the nose, the palate has beautiful lift and saline minerality. The bright fruit flavors and refreshing finish make this the perfect accompaniment to a summer’s afternoon.

Bottled Spring 2024. Pale in colour, with quite an austere, lean nose. Quite a green fruit on the palate. Tasted early on a Monday morning, first wine of the week, so I may have found this more aggressive than it really is. A little note of almond paste to finish. Drink from 2026-2027. Tasted Nov 2024.

2022 Stoller Dundee Hills Estate Oregon Pinot Noir - 6x75cl

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, October 2024

Stoller have pulled off the rarest of feats in producing a Pinot Noir for all seasons. Hailing from Oregon's Willamette Valley, this is bright and vivid, the nose introducing you to all the main players in a summer fruits pudding, before notes of cranberry and delicate spice give a subtle nod to darker nights and festivities ahead. The influence of the Jory soils can be found most on the palate, where the porcelain-smooth tannins are swept away with a wave of tingling salinity and freshness. Reminiscent of a Côte de Beaune but with a West Coast twang.

  • Vinous, May 2024, Score: 91

The 2022 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills Estate opens in the glass with a whiff of white pepper, chalk dust and dried roses. It's silky in feel with ripe red berry fruits that smooth over the palate, taking on a more tactile feel as crunchy mineral tones amass toward the close. The 2022 resonates with blue and purple floral tones, finishing fresh with a gentle tug of fine tannins. Drink 2024-2028.

2023 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu Pinson Frères - 6x75cl

  • White
  • 2025 - 2035
  • Domaine Pinson Freres
  • 6x75cl
  • Chablis, White Burgundy
  • Available Now
Pricing
£175.84 In Bond £232.50 Duty Paid inc VAT
  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

The domaine’s most important Premier Cru site, covering a little under 5 hectares, the fruit is sourced from four different locations which share the same Kimmeridgian soils as the Grands Crus. Vinified with 15% new oak barrels, there is a complexity and concentration to the wine, where accents of lemon curd, ripe pear, and vanilla are balanced by subtle spice. There is a creaminess to the palate, yet still with that Chablisien energy and drive that leaves you wanting more. Simply superb.

  • Burghound, October 2024, Score: 91-93

Here too there is a mild whiff of exotic character to the aromas of citrus confit, passion fruit, spice and plenty of Chablis typicity. There is fine volume to the more concentrated broad-shouldered flavors that display evident power on the saline-inflected, balanced and nicely dry finale. This possesses fine development potential and is a wine to consider.

  • Jasper Morris MW, June 2024, Score: 91-93

Vinified in 10% new wood, 90% stainless then all transferred to barrel for ageing. A slightly fuller yellow and the oak shows a bit on the nose, though more in the robustness of style than actual flavour. Solid and indeed striking white fruit fills the palate with a dancing acidity as well, again showing the slightly saline note of the year and region. This cuvée needs time to digest the oak, but will be worth waiting for. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted Jun 2024.

  • Goedhuis, January 2023, Score: NR

A beautiful example of St Emilion from this hillside plot adjoining Ch Canon and Ch Berliquet and neighbouring Ch L’Angelus. The combination of 70% merlot and 30% cabernet franc is perfectly expressed in this 2019 wine. The sensations of mocha and wild bramble fruits are kept perfectly in check by the pure racy freshness that the cabernet franc provides giving lift and dynamism to this classy wine. Finely poised with a delicate persistent finish. Lovely. Drink 2024 – 2032

  • Neal Martin, February 2022, Score: 91

The 2019 Croix Canon has a finely delineated, floral bouquet, wilted iris petal and violet scents permeating the mixture of black and blue fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with silky-smooth tannins, cohesive and poised, with a touch of white pepper on the finish. This is very impressive, and the best Croix Canon that I have tasted.

  • Antonio Galloni, February 2022, Score: 92

The 2019 Croix Canon is a fabulous second wine. Pliant and supple, the 2019 possesses terrific depth and resonance. Ripe dark cherry/plum, spice, lavender and rose petal are front and center. Readers will find a gorgeous Saint-Émilion that balances opulence and freshness, a pretty winning combination in my book.

  • William Kelley, April 2022, Score: 91

From sandy soils on the plain, below Berliquet and next to Jonathan Maltus' new winery, the 2019 Croix Canon offers up aromas of raspberries, plums, loamy soil and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, ample and charming, with melting tannins and succulent acids, it's already drinking well.
