  • Goedhuis, April 2004

The polo playing Tari family are long gone from Ch Giscours and the wine seems better for it. There has been a huge improvement in quality and this exceptional 2003 is a reminder of the heights that this property can achieve. This is beautifully made.

  • Neal Martin, July 2016, Score: 88

Tasted at the Château Giscours vertical, the 2003 Château Giscours is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Considering the vintage, the aromatics have retained a respectable degree of freshness, although it is not as nuanced or as complex as the previous two vintages. It offers redcurrant, leather and a touch of dark chocolate, perhaps reflecting the growing season more than the terroir. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin. This is a little lactic on the mouth, smooth if not complex, but there is no flabbiness marking the finish and it offers decent length. Drink it over the next 5-8 years. Tasted June 2015. 2013-2023.

  • Robert Parker, August 2014, Score: 89

This opulent 2003 possesses loads of herbaceously-tinged black currant and black cherry fruit intertwined with hints of road tar and barbecue smoke, a medium- to full-bodied texture, and reasonable freshness. This still intact 2003 can be drunk over the next 3-4 years.

  • Robert Parker, April 2006, Score: 90

Giscours should be taken seriously by consumers as the quality has been ratcheted up over the last 7-8 years. The deep ruby/purple-hued 2003 offers complex, evolved aromatics of wood smoke, chocolate, charcoal, black cherry jam, and cassis. Lush, medium to full-bodied, and broad, with low acidity, copious glycerin, and a layered, persistent finish (it lasts for 40+ seconds), this beauty can be drunk now or cellared for 15 years. Drink: Now-2021

  • Robert Parker, April 2005, Score: 91-94

A powerful, broadly textured offering, the 2003 exhibits an inky ruby/purple color in addition to a sweet nose of camphor, melted licorice, smoke, black cherries and cassis. It is dense, powerful, yet at the same time harmonious, elegant, and pure, with wonderful sweetness and a voluptuous mid-palate and finish. It requires cellaring, but it possesses the stuffing and power to last for 15-18 years. Drink: Now-2020

  • James Suckling, April 2004, Score: 92-94

Intense aromas of cooked fruit and prunes. Full-bodied, with rich and ripe fruit character. Soft, round tannins and a long finish. Heady and rich. Port-like. Could be the legendary 1970 in the remake. 20,000 cases made. -- J.S.

  • Decanter, April 2004

Very deep ruby, very Cabernet nose, leafy blackcurrants and very good concentration of flavours, ripe, supple and has all the charm of Margaux despite the concentration, will be very attractive with purity and depth. Drink: Now-2018

Producer

Château Giscours

A diamond in the rough, for many years Château Giscours was an inconsistent performer. In 1995,the estate was sold to Eric Albada Jelgersma, who purchased Château du Tertre two years later. Hisarrival has had a significant impact in terms of quality. As Robert Parker has noted in Bordeaux (2003) his 2001, 2000 and 1999 vintages are "the finest Giscours trilogy to date."

Region

Margaux

Plump, silky and seductive are the words often used to describe wines from Margaux. Because of their style, they tend to be user friendly and more approachable when young. This is in part due to its terroir which is comprised of the thinnest soil as well as the highest proportion of chunky gravel in all of the Médoc. It drains well but also is it more susceptible to vintage variation. Margaux wines tend to have the highest proportions of Merlot within the core of the Médoc further adding to their ample roundness and openness. Margaux is home to the largest number of classified growths including its namesake first growth, Château Margaux, as well as third growths, Palmer and d'Issan.
