  • Antonio Galloni, April 2012, Score: 94/+100

The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques is showing just a fraction of its true personality. Dark red fruit, minerals, and flowers come together in this textured, highly expressive Burgundy. There is an element of elusiveness that slowly gains clarity in the glass. The flavors build beautifully to the round, inviting finish. This is truly gorgeous juice. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024 - 94/+100

As is usually the case, this offers a big step up in aromatic refinement with its ripe, pure, cool and fresh nose that combines notes of red and blue pinot fruit plus wet stone, violet and hints of earth. The rich, intense and stone-inflected middle weight flavors are quite finely detailed and moderately austere while staining the palate on the seriously long and driving finish. Terrific. 92-94/100. In 1986, Bruno was entrusted with the vineyards of his parents, brothers and sisters which included those of Clos de Bèze, Cazetiers, Clos St-Jacques, Vosne-Romanée, Clos du Fonteny and Chambolle-Musigny. More vineyards were purchased by the estate in 1993, inlcuding Corton-Charlemagne, Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton, and in 1996 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle was added to bring the size of the domaine to more than 23 hectares. Bruno Clair cultivates, harvests and bottles his wines with the assistance of André Geoffroy and Philippe Brun. The grapes are partially destemmed before being put into open wood vats. The crushing of the bunches helps to improve the texture of the cap, which forms over the fermenting wine, and to prolong the time of fermentation. If necessary, the vintage is cooled and alcoholic fermentation starts slowly and uses indigenous yeasts exclusively. According to the intensity of the alcoholic fermentation, punching will take place from two to eight times per day. According to the wine, the time of "cuvaison" (fermentation) takes from 14 to 21 days. The wines are then put into oak barrels and transferred to the cellar. Malolactic fermentation takes place generally in the spring when the cellars are gently heated by the warming of the weather.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
