  • Neal Martin, December 2015, Score: 92-94

The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets includes an additional parcel of 50-plus year-old vines towards the top of the Premier Cru, increasing the average age of those planted by Guillaume's father at the beginning of the 1990s. It has a strict, mineral bouquet that is reserved but detailed. It is holding everything back, whereas the Fremiets is more generous at this stage of its maturation. The palate is quite intense, very well balanced with effervescent red cherry and strawberry fruit interlaced with orange rind. It fans out wonderful with a hint of spice enlivening the classy and persistent finish. This is just superb. Drink 2018-2035

Slight reduction but still lots of perfume. Quite exotic. Polished and racy. Great race. Very graceful. Drink 2023-2035

  • Sarah Marsh, December 2015

Flighty aroma. Airy and light-bodied. It is elegant and pure. Lucid fruit and delicate tannins with a floaty feel and gauzy quality…at the end talcy chalky minerals. Lovely. Score 18.4 !The domaine had less than 0.5 hec and bought a 0.25 parcel recently, which they feel has brought more to the wine. In the original parcel the vines are now 15 years old and the new part has vines of 50 years and is very close. “I like showing these wines together as the vineyards are just 50 years apart and the wines are so different,” remarks Guillaume.

Arriving at the family Château in Volnay and standing in the famed Clos des Ducs overlooking the village and its other 1er crus below always gives me a huge thrill. Region

Volnay

A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
