  • Goedhuis, April 2016, Score: 91-93

Less easy to taste than the Grand Vin. This is not big but is a wine of refinement, with bright cherry and red currant flavours. It possesses attractive sweet fruits in the mid-palate and shows an early drinking nature.

  • Neal Martin, April 2016, Score: 89-91

The 2015 Carruades de Lafite is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc. This has a satisfying purity on the nose: blackberry and briary, a distant, cold slate-like note just underneath, with the new oak (close to 20%) neatly subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. There is moderate depth to this slightly foursquare and conservative Carruades, but there is also plenty of freshness and it has an appealing, unassuming finish that is both harmonious and precise. Probably one of the most approachable deuxième vins, afford this 2-3 years in bottle before broaching.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2016, Score: 90-93

The2015 Carruades de Lafite is a very pretty second wine. Dark, sensual and inviting, the 2015 Carruades is super-expressive today. Graphite, plum, black cherry, lavender and licorice are all nicely delineated throughout. The higher presence of Merlot gives the Carruades lovely inner sweetness and perfume. This is very nicely done.

  • Robert Parker, Feb 2018, Score: 91/100

A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc and aged for 18 months in barrels, 10% new, the 2015 Carruades de Lafite is medium to deep garnet-purple colored and just a little closed at this youthful stage, revealing delicate notes of red and black plums, black cherries and dried herbs plus touches of pencil lead, cedar chest and beef drippings. Medium-bodied, refreshing and with a well-played chewy texture, although just a baby in terms of evolution, it has an accessible structure, finishing long and savory. • James Suckling, April 2016, Score: 92-93

A silky and fine second wine of Lafite with blueberry, blackberry and flower aromas and flavors. Cedar and nuts too.

  • Decanter, April 2016, Score: 91

A discreet nose of real finesse with the Lafite violets prettily present. While it seems on the light side now, time in barrel will add structure.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2016, Score: 17.5+

(57 Cabernet Sauvignon, 36 Merlot, 7 Cabernet Franc) All the Lafite wines are under 13% alcohol and this restraint is sensational. While some parcels on more clay-rich soils came under pressure from the late showers and gave rise to a few issues, the majority of free-draining plots on this incredible estate made the cut. Further selection has resulted in beautiful wines. A wine full of finesse and poise, Carru¬ades is excellently balanced between Cabernet and Merlot and this harmony of red and black fruit has resulted in a precocious and sexy wine with immense appeal and élan.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2016, Score: 16.5

57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc. Relatively light crimson. Light, rather timid nose. Drying tannins on the end. Very pretty and polite but not at all dramatic! Drink 2023-2031

  • Tim Atkin, May 2016, Score: 94

Making up 35% of the total production at Lafite in 2015 (25% was declassified), this is a beautifully restrained second wine that was picked comparatively early to retain acidity. The freshness of this wine was a relief after tasting some of the vintage’s more extracted wines. Drink: 2020-28

One peek into Château Lafite's cellar is like entering into the 18th century. Its cobweb-covered chandeliers subtly light shadowy corridors that play host to hundreds of ancient vintages. Nothing could be more representative of its wine making philosophy - classic, stylish and yet powerful - characteristics that have made it one of the most collectible wines in the world. Situated in the north of Pauillac, Château Lafite-Rothschild sits on gravel soils with bits of limestone scattered in the mix. It is one of the largest estates in the Medoc and one of the most prominent, the wines exude elegance and finesse. The vineyard is laid out to mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) with the rest comprising Merlot (25%) Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (2%). The second wine, Carruades de Lafite, has a slightly more Merlot than the Grand Vin and is thus more approachable in its youth.Read less

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
