  • Goedhuis, March 2022

The impression is of a plush nose, full of toasty French oak notes, wild rosebush hints. Dense, but almost closed initially. The palate however is a different story: pure and precise entry, a lot juicier, with higher acidity too. More concentrated than the 2016, with more structure - more firm grippy tannins. Just a bigger wine all round. This needs time, but that’s not surprising. It has a lovely perfumed finish, and is delicious if young.

  • Goedhuis, December 2016

An outstanding wine, fully deserving of itThis is an outs grand cru status. Enticing raspberry aromas, this has gorgeous sweet red fruit flavours and a tension between grainy and silky tannins. The wine unfurls in the palate with a succulent enveloping mouth-feel. It finishes with huge class.

  • Neal Martin, December 2016, Score: 93-95

The 2015 Clos de Lambrays Grand Cru contains 95% whole cluster fruit, part of the crop with thicker skins deprived of their stems according to winemaker Thierry Brouin. It is being aged in 50% new oak. It has dusky black fruit on the nose, earthier than I was expecting given the growing season, the stem addition lending a subtle undergrowth and moss-like scent. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin and offers succinctly judged acidity. It is certainly harmonious in the mouth with a generous dash of black pepper on the finish, a pleasant prickle in the mouth after the wine has departed. Whilst not the purring engine that is Clos de Tart since it is more rough-hewn perhaps, this Clos des Lambrays has a charm of its own. Drink Date 2019 - 2040

  • Burghound, January 2017, Score: 92-95

Once again the nose is quite ripe yet very fresh with its layered array of spicy and markedly floral-inflected black cherry and plum scents. There is impressive size, weight and power to the more mineral-driven and refined medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by a distinctly firm tannic spine on the wonderfully persistent and mildly austere finale. This is one very serious wine in 2015 and thus be prepared to allow it at least 10 to 12 years first. Sweet spot. Drink 2030+

Producer

Domaine des Lambrays

This Morey Saint Denis domaine may have passed through various owners over the recent decades, but one noticeably steadfast mark on Burgundy’s landscape has been Thierry Brouin, making the wines at this iconic estate since 1979 until his retirement in 2017. His signature style of whole bunch vinification for the grand cru has carved an esteemed place for Thierry in Burgundy’s story. The domaine was recently purchase by Bernard Arnault of LVMH, and a new régisseur has been installed. Boris Champy has nearly 10 years’ experience in the Côte d’Or working at Louis Latour, and before that in California and Bordeaux. He and Thierry worked closely alongside each other in 2017, ensuring a smooth handover. Tantalisingly short of a monopole, the domaine owns 8.66 hectares of the 8.8 ha Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru in the heart of Morey Saint Denis. As well as the substantial Clos, the domaine also has vines in premier cru and village sites within Morey, and added two small premier cru plots in Puligny Montrachet in the 1990s.

Region

Clos des Lambrays

Clos des Lambrays is a Grand Cru appellation situated in the commune of Morey St Denis in the Cote de Nuits. The 8.8 hectares of land, largely owned by the Saier family, were elevated from Premier Cru to Grand Cru status in 1979 as the vineyards clearly had huge potential. Nestled between Gevrey Chambertin to the north and Chambolle Musigny to the south the best Clos des Lambrays wines combine the feminine delicacy of Chambolle with the power and structure of Gevrey.
