Considering the severity of the frost damage in most of Chambolle, a 15% loss in this parcel is a miraculous outcome. It sits on a little hill, and this subtlest of elevations gave it just enough to avoid the worst effects of the extreme cold (cool air descends down slopes). It has a pale ruby colour and a red berry scent, with fine, chalky tannins and a long, fresh finish. It will drink well from youth and across the years.

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes was affected by the frost but less so than the village cru. It has a nicely detailed, slightly earthy bouquet, freshly tilled soil aromas percolating though the dark berry fruit, the oak nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannin on the entry, notes of orange peel infusing the dark cherry fruit with just a touch of greenness on the finish. Not bad although the 2015 was a step up in quality.

  • Burghound, January 2018, Score: 91-93

An ultra-fresh nose exhibits a lovely and airy array of essence of red cherry, cranberry and lavender. The cool, pure and equally fresh medium weight flavors possess terrific vibrancy along with first-rate delineation on the mineral-inflected, clean and driving finish. This is excellent and a wine that should age very well as the balance is impeccable. Outstanding. Drink: 2024+

  • Stephen Tanzer, January 2018, Score: 89-91

Medium bright red. Aromas of black raspberry and licorice are given punch by pungent rocky minerality. Concentrated but still quite tight and wound up; this wine too is carrying a high level of CO2. The tannins are fine-grained but distinctly firm in the early going. Finishes subtle, savory and long but I find this wine difficult to assess with confidence today.

Transparent crimson. Lots of drive and delivery. Great stuff! Drink 2026-2042

The Hudelots are an ancient Burgundian family whose ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle since before the French Revolution. Needless to say, wine has been in their blood for almost as long. Alain Huedlot began his wine career in 1954 working for his father and other local growers. At the ripe young age of 20, he started renting vineyards from his family in Chambolle Musigny until eventually receiving other small parcels from his father. Following a passionate and whirlwind romance with the granddaughter of Charles Noellat, he married despite protests from her family. This controversial union ensured additional vineyards despite a harrying and lengthy legal battle. Today the domaine owns a total of 10 well-situated hectares, which are split over 5 communes. Alain Hudelot’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt is a man on a mission. Having arrived at the domaine from Champagne only six years ago, he is already considered one of the brightest young talents in the region. These wines are wonderful examples of traditionally styled Burgundy - superbly pure and focused with an undeniable sense of terroir.Read less

Region

Chambolle Musigny

The wines of Chambolle Musigny are like no other. They can be superbly delicate, yet mindblowingly complex. Of all the northern Burgundy appellations, they are the most ethereal, and as a result the most feminine. Most of the Chambolle Musigny vineyard area is encompassed in its Village and Premier Cru appellations including the robust Beaux Bruns, the splendidly mineral Le Cras and the poised yet powerful Les Amoureuses. It produces only two Grand Crus - the round and rich Bonnes Mares which it shares with Morey St. Dénis, as well as what could be described as the Stradivarius of grand crus, Musigny.
