  • Goedhuis, December 2017

Named after the small stream La Petite Vouge that runs through this vineyard located on the north side of the Clos, wedged up towards Musigny. Charles notes how he likes “the freshness and minerality” of the cuvée, which displays sweet aromatics in 2016, complemented by a toasty touch of new oak.

  • Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 88-90

The 2016 Vougeot 1er Cru les Petits Vougeot has a clean and pure bouquet with dark cherries and raspberry coulis scents that are well defined, if just a tad conservative. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite energetic on the entry and then segueing into a structured, denser finish of black and blue fruit. As such I would afford this three or four years in bottle. Drink 2021-2032

  • Burghound, January 2018, Score: 90-92

An exuberantly expressive and spicy nose offers up a lovely mélange of pure red and dark cherry and floral aromas. The sleek, indeed satin-textured middle weight flavors brim with minerality on the super-saline infused finish. I really like the delineation and energy here plus the mid-palate concentration is better than usual. In 2016 this is very Chambollesque in character. Drink: 2024+

  • Stephen Tanzer, January 2018, Score: 89-92

Dark red with ruby tones. Very ripe but slightly inky aromas of dark berries, minerals and bitter chocolate. Densely packed, concentrated and sweet, displaying terrific inner-mouth tension and Chambolle-like stony minerality. Finishes firmly tannic but not austere, with slowly rising length and very good grip. Classy, saline wine from vines that are now about 30 years old--and, in the opinion of van Canneyt, showing more depth than previously.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2018, Score: 16.5

Correct, well cared-for somehow. Lots of acidity but also lots of fruit. Long and fresh, with some polish. Drink 2026-2038

The Hudelots are an ancient Burgundian family whose ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle since before the French Revolution. Needless to say, wine has been in their blood for almost as long. Alain Huedlot began his wine career in 1954 working for his father and other local growers. At the ripe young age of 20, he started renting vineyards from his family in Chambolle Musigny until eventually receiving other small parcels from his father. Following a passionate and whirlwind romance with the granddaughter of Charles Noellat, he married despite protests from her family. This controversial union ensured additional vineyards despite a harrying and lengthy legal battle. Today the domaine owns a total of 10 well-situated hectares, which are split over 5 communes. Alain Hudelot’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt is a man on a mission. Having arrived at the domaine from Champagne only six years ago, he is already considered one of the brightest young talents in the region. These wines are wonderful examples of traditionally styled Burgundy - superbly pure and focused with an undeniable sense of terroir.Read less

Region

Vougeot

Unlike the other predominant Côte de Nuits appellations, Vougeot's main appellation is its onlygrand cru vineyard, Clos de Vougeot. It is by far the largest grand cru of the area totalling over 50 hectares with over 40 owners rumoured to own vines. As a result, its vineyards run from the flat, clay-dominated valley floor to the well-drained, venerated sloped hillsides suggesting that its quality ending on where it is grown. As a result, it is often the least valued of the grand crus and can offer excellent value, particularly in good vintages where ripeness has been attained.
