  • Goedhuis, November 2018

This is another substantial holding for the estate, with 2.77 hectares across four parcels. The richer red soils here produce a wine with amplified volume. The 2017 shows more personality and distinction than in previous vintages, with a nutty richness weaving through the sharp Chablis fruit, and sets the tone for an excellent set of wines that follow.

  • Neal Martin, August 2018, Score: 92-94

The 2017 Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru comes from three parcels of 35, 60 and 80-year old vines in different parts of the vineyard that crop at just 25hl/ha. It has a classic Chablis bouquet with a potent sea influence, oyster shells and cockles, and a whiff of kelp. The palate is beautifully balanced with a crisp line of acidity, very harmonious and elegant, the 20% barrel maturation just lending a little more weight to the finish. Superb. Drink 2020-2035

  • Antonio Galloni, January 2020, Score: 94

The 2017 Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru is broad, creamy and ample, as wines from this premier cru site so often are. Apricot, wild flowers, mint, lemon confit and lightly honeyed notes all flesh out in a racy Chablis that is all about textural depth and richness. All the elements meld together effortlessly. I imagine the 2017 will drink well with minimal cellaring, but it also clearly has the acidity and structure to age well for many years. It is one of my personal favorites in the range in 2017. This is a fabulous wine. Drink 2022-2037

  • Burghound, October 2018, Score: 90-92

An expressive and mildly exotic nose consists of fresh and ripe yellow orchard fruit, citrus, lychee and a hint of ocean breeze. There is good volume to the delicious, round, rich and quite generously proportioned medium-bodied flavors that possess good power and fine length if perhaps not quite the same complexity. Note that this too should amply reward mid-term keeping. Drink: 2024+

  • Wine Advocate, August 2018, Score: 91-93

At this early stage, the 2017 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu is especially impressive, revealing notes of honeyed apples, white peach and spring flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, glossy palate with chewy extract, a deep, tense core and excellent cut. I'm looking forward to seeing it from bottle.

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2018, Score: 91-94

From four plots on the western side of the vineyard, at all altitudes. From very old vines producing under 30 hl/ha. The nose also has a touch of the reductive chopped greenery in the bouquet but the palate is magically rounded, very svelte, perfect balance, graceful energy and very long. Bravo. 4 stars.

The Billaud-Simon name is long-established in Chablis, dating back to 1815 when Charles-Louis-Noël Billaud purchased his first vineyards. The estate remained in family ownership for 200 years until Erwan Faiveley purchased Billaud-Simon for Joseph Faiveley in 2015. This represents a new era for the Faiveley family, one of the Côte d’Or’s most significant vineyard owners, now investing their expertise and commitment to producing great wines in the Yonne and Chablis with approximately 18 hectares of exceptional vineyard holdings including four premiers crus and four grands crus. Under the guidance of Wine Director Olivier Bailly, they remain respectful to the traditions of the estate and continue to sell the wines under the Billaud-Simon name. The style is graceful and pure. Olivier seeks to make wines with true appellational authenticity. Oak is kept to minimal levels, only used judiciously, allowing the natural fruit content to express itself to a maximum.Read less

Region

Chablis

Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
