  • Goedhuis, December 2019

The high altitude location (400 metres) of these plots in Arnaud’s vineyards near Dijon really helped this cuvée in 2018. With fresh red cherry flavours, this is a bright and lively style, with fine-grained tannins. Medium length and charming.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 86-88

The 2018 Bourgogne Rouge comes from vines toward Dijon. It has a delightful bouquet of ebullient red berry fruit, the 25% new oak nicely integrated. The smooth palate is medium-bodied with fleshy red fruit and a well-defined finish. Delicious. 2020 - 2024

  • Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 88

Bursting with aromas of sweet berries, cherries and a deft touch of spicy oak, the 2018 Bourgogne Cuvée de Noble Souche is medium-bodied, supple and charming, with succulent acids and an open-knit, expressive core of fruit. This is an approachable regional wine that will drink well on release. Drink 2020-2033

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 90

The vines are grown on the other side of Dijon in a village called Daix. Arnaud Mortet enthuses about the location, red earth on very limestone rock, windy healthy plateau. Fine fresh purple with a really elegant and fresh bouquet, delicious! Very persistent.

For many years, Dénis Mortet worked passionately to create one of the most sought after domaines in Burgundy. He learned about winemaking while working with his father Charles, a cousin of Charles Rousseau. From the early 1990s he built his vineyard area to almost 10 hectares dispersed throughout Gevrey Chambertin, Chambolle Musigny, Vougeot, Fixin and Marsannay. His exceptional determination and self-criticism drove him in pursuit of the holy grail of Gevrey Chambertin. Year-in and year-out, he aimed for higher and higher ideals believing that there was always better, always purer. Sadly, he has not lived to see his results. After his tragic death in 2006 at the age of just 51, his son, Arnaud, took over vineyard management and winemaking. Since then, this domaine has been soaring to ever-greater heights. In Dénis’s era the wines had been admired for their opulence, but in the past decade Arnaud has redefined the Mortet style as one that ascends towards a pinnacle of finesse and elegance. The dextrous handling of each parcel means the Fixin and Marsannay are as interesting talking points as the Lavaux St Jacques and Clos de Vougeot. The domaine has forged a reputation for organic viticulture par excellence, and the dedicated work in the vineyards is abundantly clear in the cellar. Arnaud has an astonishing gift for managing whole bunch fruit and matching new oak to his pure, crystalline wines.Read less

Region

Bourgogne

This blanket regional appellation can apply to wines throughout Burgundy (60% of the area's production) as long as they comply with regulations relating to grape type, yield and alcohol content. Reds and roses are from Pinot Noir or Gamay. Whites are Chardonnay. They are usually the most straightforward of the Burgundy wines, and as a result are the least expensive and the most approachable upon release. In the hands of a more serious producer these can represent exceptional value and quality. The wines are made with the same care and attention to detail as their grander wines. However, they may not qualify for a village or communal appellation because the vines are too young or the vineyard area is outside the appellation boundary.
