  • Goedhuis, December 2019

The 30% whole bunch fermentation Arnaud now practices reaps dividends here with its fine alpine fruit flavours and soft, textured tannins. A gloriously satisfying wine, showing classic harmonious Chambolle charm, with finesse and elegance on the finish.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 90-92

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Beaux Bruns 1er Cru includes 30% whole bunch. It has a very earthy bouquet, nicely defined but broody at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied and very saline on the entry, offering a fine bead of acidity and a clean, precise finish. Fine, but not the very best Mortet has made this year, since he set the bar so high. 2022 - 2036

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 89-92

Evident but not dominant wood influence is present on the overtly spicy liqueur-like aromas of plum and dark cherry. The rich and quite generously proportioned medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finish. This well-made effort is sufficiently firmly structured that it will need at least 5 years of cellaring first. Drink 2028+

  • Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 92-94

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Aux Beaux Bruns has turned out very well this year, and Mortet appears to have picked the perfect date to harvest this early-ripening site. Soaring from the glass with scents of ripe cherries, raspberries, peonies and candied citrus peel, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with velvety tannins, lively acids and a mineral finish.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 91-93

30% partial whole bunches (just the main stem removed) and 60% new wood. Clear bright fresh purple. A complex nose - how to dissect this? The wine has just avoided overheating thanks in part to the destemming program. Taking out the big stem limits the acid loss. Very ripe, certainly juicy, tannins just fine, luscious black cherries.

For many years, Dénis Mortet worked passionately to create one of the most sought after domaines in Burgundy. He learned about winemaking while working with his father Charles, a cousin of Charles Rousseau. From the early 1990s he built his vineyard area to almost 10 hectares dispersed throughout Gevrey Chambertin, Chambolle Musigny, Vougeot, Fixin and Marsannay. His exceptional determination and self-criticism drove him in pursuit of the holy grail of Gevrey Chambertin. Year-in and year-out, he aimed for higher and higher ideals believing that there was always better, always purer. Sadly, he has not lived to see his results. After his tragic death in 2006 at the age of just 51, his son, Arnaud, took over vineyard management and winemaking. Since then, this domaine has been soaring to ever-greater heights. In Dénis’s era the wines had been admired for their opulence, but in the past decade Arnaud has redefined the Mortet style as one that ascends towards a pinnacle of finesse and elegance. The dextrous handling of each parcel means the Fixin and Marsannay are as interesting talking points as the Lavaux St Jacques and Clos de Vougeot. The domaine has forged a reputation for organic viticulture par excellence, and the dedicated work in the vineyards is abundantly clear in the cellar. Arnaud has an astonishing gift for managing whole bunch fruit and matching new oak to his pure, crystalline wines.Read less

Region

Chambolle Musigny

The wines of Chambolle Musigny are like no other. They can be superbly delicate, yet mindblowingly complex. Of all the northern Burgundy appellations, they are the most ethereal, and as a result the most feminine. Most of the Chambolle Musigny vineyard area is encompassed in its Village and Premier Cru appellations including the robust Beaux Bruns, the splendidly mineral Le Cras and the poised yet powerful Les Amoureuses. It produces only two Grand Crus - the round and rich Bonnes Mares which it shares with Morey St. Dénis, as well as what could be described as the Stradivarius of grand crus, Musigny.
