  • Goedhuis, December 2019

The Drouhin Laroze plot is in one of the vineyard’s best positions just below the great Chambertin Clos de Bèze. Full of crisp, crunchy red fruit, this is a wine of purity and the tart, tannic core creates a dynamic energy. A true grand cru to be appreciated with some bottle age.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 94-96

The 2018 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru, half of which was pulled out for future replanting, is another example of a wine from this vineyard that excelled in this vintage (see Domaine Dugat). It has a very well-defined, focused bouquet of intense black cherry, raspberry and crushed stone aromas, the whole bunch addition lending freshness to counterbalance the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Smooth and harmonious, with just a touch of toasty new oak to be subsumed on the finish. This has great potential, but afford it several years in bottle. 2025 - 2050

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 88-91

The wood treatment, while certainly evident, is better integrated on the poached plum, spice and violet-suffused nose. There is reasonably good vibrancy to the delicious, supple and pliant medium weight flavors that terminate in a dusty and sappy mocha and bitter cherry pit-infused finish. There is a touch of edginess present though it may well dissipate with a few years of age. Drink 2030+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 90-94

The holding is in the En la Chapelle sector, just above the little wall. Dense purple black but vibrant in colour and with some energy to the nose. While the fruit is pretty ripe, I don’t find it too cooked though it does not have their usual floral style. But it isn’t unbalanced, and I think it is very good but not quite typical for them.

They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Region

Chapelle Chambertin

One of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. Chapelle-Chambertin's vineyards are on gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north. The thin rocky soil forces the vines to work hard. The exceptional wines produced in Chapelle-Chambertin are complex, powerful and incredibly long-lasting.
