  • Goedhuis, December 2021

This is a very steep vineyard close to Corton Charlemagne which contains a high proportion of clay-limestone marl. This 2020 really lives up to its royal name; it most certainly is the “king”, as Claude says! It has an aristocratic composure, with taut restrained dark berries, silky tannins and a pleasing line of acidity. It is so stylish, full of control and poise. A quite superb wine.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 91-93

The 2020 Corton Clos-du-Roi Grand Cru, containing 100% whole bunch, has the most perfumed and floral of the trio of Corton’s from the Domaine, seductive, quite feminine. The palate is fleshy and rounded, very smooth and quite polished with hints of mocha and dark chocolate towards the finish. This is deceptively approachable - give it five years in bottle to fully come together. Drink 2025 - 2040

  • Burghound, April 2022, Score: 92-95

Ripe if restrained aromas of violet, plum liqueur and dark berry coulis are trimmed in hints of spice and the sauvage. The super-sleek and almost painfully intense large-scaled flavors brim with both minerality and sappy dry extract that serves to buffer the dense if relatively fine-grained tannins shaping the hugely long, serious and youthfully austere finale. This is an imposingly scaled Clos du Roi that should age gracefully for the better part of the next two decades. Sweet spot. Drink 2037+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 94-97

Planted in the late 1960s. Beautiful purple with class and density. Really the most sensual nose of all, makes me think of alpine raspberries, should they exist. Every bit as intense as the other bouquets but with much more finesse. A few tannins to finish but they are supple and all but smothered by the fruit. This is as good as Corton gets and definitely merits grand cru status.

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Corton

The Grands Crus of Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay are shared between Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix Serrigny and Pernand Vergelesses. The vines for both are planted on the hillsides underneath the plateau of Corton's woodland forest. The majorityof Pinot Noir is planted in the southern and eastern sector where the soil is naturally rich with red iron clay giving additional body and power. Overall, the wines from these areas tend to be fruit forward and fleshy with a balance of round edges and fine concentration.
