A charming expression of Chardonnay from the clay limestone soils of Pernand Vergelesses. White floral character with a sprinkling of jasmine and cracked hazelnut. Its soft creamy mouth feel is kept perfectly in check by a line of mineral salinity. Excellent purity with a long persistent finish.

The 2020 Pernand-Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses 1er Cru Blanc has a perfumed bouquet with scents of yellow plum, jasmine and a hint of lavender. The palate is well balanced, quite primal and grapey and is missing some mineralité towards the finish and as such, I suspect this will be suited for early consumption. Drink 2023 - 2029

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 90-92

Apparently, it was Michel Bettane’s advice to plant some white in the Ile de Vergelesses vineyard. This has not been my favourite wine (because it is taking the place of the stunning red) but I am forced to admit that this is very good in 2020. The vines are getting towards 40 years old. Claudse notes that they find small grapes at the top of the plot, fatter below. The soil is a similar limestone to Charlemagne but gives off pear notes. Beginning to find its character which I used not to find. Good acidity too and a little lemon to finish.

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Pernand Vergelesses

With its neighbours, Ladoix Serrigny and Aloxe-Corton, Pernand Vergelesses has its own village and premier cru appellations but shares the two grand crus: Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay. The limestone marl soil is well-suited to growing Chardonnay and the resulting white wines are crisp and mineral with a good capacity for ageing. Pinot Noir is planted in areas of redder iron-rich soil and the best vineyards produce charmingly soft red wines with classic notes of raspberries and violets.
