Fritz Haag
A benchmark producer of the Middle Mosel, Fritz Haag has an important part to play in the history of the region, and the estate is first mentioned in 1605. The mighty Juffer vineyard in the village of Brauneberger is one of the Mosel’s finest sites and one of a small handful to be designated ‘Grand Cru’ by Napoleon in 1804.
Located in Brauneberg (brown mountain), this stretch of the Mosel is rich in brown slate. The family has holdings in the village’s two most famous plots: Brauneberger Juffer and Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr (sundial). The name “juffer” was first used in the 1790s in reference to the three “juffers” (daughters) who took over from their father at the time. The late Wilhelm Haag ran the estate for the latter half the 20th century and was one of Germany’s best winemakers in this period. Head of the Mosel VDP for over 20 years, Wilhelm was pivotal in elevating the Mosel and his wines command huge respect. Wilhelm’s son Oliver took over in 2005 and has not faltered in bringing us magical Rieslings in the distinct Fritz Haag style. Characterised by their ability to give complex contradictions with every sip, the wines are powerful yet subtle, tense and nervy, yet soft and floral, fresh yet deeply intense. This is Mosel Riesling at its pinnacle.
