  • Goedhuis, December 2023

Made from 3 hectares of estate owned vines on the upper slopes of this fine Premier Cru, this wine has a greater degree of definition and more mineral energy than wines from the lower slopes. An opening salvo of clementine and apricot is a little more unctuous than some years, with a rewarding sunny disposition, ahead of the limestone mineral bite lifts through to give a rewarding final memory on the finish.

  • Burghound, June 2024, Score: 91-94

Once again there is plenty of smoky character suffusing the slightly cooler aromas of green apple, lemon rind, spice and a hint of exotic tea. There is excellent cut and solid mid-palate concentration to the markedly more mineral-driven flavors that possess an even sleeker mouthfeel, all wrapped in a chiseled, youthfully austere and impressively long finish that displays focused power. This is quite tightly wound and a wine that is going to need at least some patience. Sweet spot outstanding

Château de Meursault has gone through some very exciting developments under the direction of Stéphane Follin-Arbelet, whose family themselves own a highly respected domaine in Aloxe Corton. The vineyards under the Château’s ownership cover an extraordinary 65 hectares, from Savigny Lès Beaune through to Meursault. In 2019 the estate was certified as fully organic, quite an achievement for a domaine of this size, covering so many fine appellations. Against the backdrop of the property’s historical origins, with Cistercian cellars dating back to the 12th century, this dynamic domaine is investing extensively in both the vineyards and the winery, reaching new heights in quality. Stéphane’s wines are classically made. The Chardonnay is fermented in barrel and aged on lees for 12 months before bottling. The reds are beautiful wines, with all the dimensions to age.Read less

Region

Meursault

Meursault is the first great white wine area that one stumbles upon on leaving Beaune. Unlike other white dominated appellations in Burgundy, Meursault has no grand cru vineyards. It nonetheless has significant flair and power which make up for this deficiency. Indeed, if tasted blind some of these wines could even surpass other Burgundian grand crus. They are no fainting daisies. This may partially be due to Meursault's lower water table which enables the roots to delve deep in the soil picking up many trace minerals and which further stresses the vines. In addition, the cellars are more profound and cooler, enabling long fermentations, which increase complexity and longevity. Some interesting red wines are also made.
