Aux Boudots is one of the finest sites in Nuits St Georges. It mirrors many of the traits found in neighbouring Vosne Romanée 1er Cru, Aux Malconsorts. This is so full of life and energy, with a direct central core of red stone fruits, encased with some mocha and bitter orange. Firm and tight like a coiled spring, waiting to burst from the glass.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 88-90

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Boudots 1er Cru comes from a vineyard comprising very old vines and the first fruit from new vine plantings. The expressive bouquet has blackberry, blueberry and light crushed stone aromas, with hints of white flowers emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied and quite understated compared to the Roncières. I just discerned a slight, nagging greenness on the finish that hints at blocked maturation somewhere. I will be cautious for now.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 92-95

Only older vines are used for this cuvée .A wonderfully spicy and broad-ranging nose is comprised by notes of purple fruit, earth, exotic tea and a floral top note. There is both first-rate density and powerful to the sappy big-bodied flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that also buffers the firm tannic spine shaping the beautifully persistent finish. This is terrific and a wine that should age effortlessly. Drinking 2034+.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 93-96

For the first time the Boudots is half young vines and half old, so needs to be picked earlier than in the past. A bright mid purple, there is an impressive intensity to the fruit, half red berries, half darker raspberry, half Nuits and half Vosne. This is not too bulky, too massive, but entirely harmonious with a long fine and fresh finish. Drink from 2032-2040.

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
