A radiant coral and pink onion skin colour. A scent of summer fruits, fresh herbs and a saline freshness. The palate is perfectly pitched between its zippy attack and a textural depth and tension. Whilst possessing all the joy that is associated with a pink wine, it is by no means frivolous,. Its carefully weighted finish, makes for a classical food wine, whilst maintaining an ability to be enjoyed at aperitif time on its own as well.

  • Wine Advocate, July 2024, Score: 92

This estate, located on the Porquerolles island and owned by Chanel Group, produces delicate, perfumed rosé wines. The 2023 Cotes de Provence Rose Porquerolles evokes aromas of red berries, lime, flowers and crushed stones intertwined with maritime notes. Pure and precise, medium-bodied and perfectly balanced, it’s delineated with bright acids, a juicy core of fruit and a long, mineral and mouthwatering finish. It's a blend of Grenache, Vermentino, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Tibouren.

  • Matthew Jukes, July 2024, Score: 18.5

The colour is anything other than pink, with coral and pale amber tones that look serious and grown-up. The perfume is multi-layered with equal measures of spice and tanginess, tart stone fruit and abundant red fruits. But this is not a wine with any trace of raspberries or strawberries. There is tension here with pomegranate, cranberry, sour red cherries, pomelo and rhubarb. This is a delicious wine with obvious flesh and allure, but it is extremely carefully delivered. It makes other houses look like they produce wines for carefree teenagers, while Domaine de l’Ile is designed for experienced adults only! Interestingly, Pierre and Jean-Basile brought a bottle of the 2020 vintage to show how beautifully these wines age. While this was only the second vintage of this wine, it is precision-cut, resplendent and incredibly satiating. The colour had barely budged, and the fruit was soothing and the finish keen. This is a wine to savour as much as it is one to treasure. Take my advice and track down these wines – you will not regret it!

Rose pink, definitely darker than most Provence rosés. It certainly has the scent of the sea. And spreads right across the palate with a saline twist. Far more character than most of its peers. This would be great with fish and a wide range of summery Mediterranean dishes. Nice little bite on the end. (JR)

  • Jeb Dunnuck, August 2024, Score: 91

Another terrific rosé from this estate, the 2023 Cotes De Provence Porquerolles Rosé is a more mineral-driven, savory, almost salty effort that has beautiful darker framboise and strawberry notes as well as some spice, chalky nuances. I love its overall balance, it has medium-bodied richness, plenty of depth, and a clean, dry, salivating finish. It's beautifully done and just about heaven with tapas.

Domaine de l'Ile

Welcome to the new jewel on the Mediterranean Island of Porquerolles: Domaine de L’Ile. Chanel’s latest project is based in Provence’s prestigious and ever-growing rosé wine market, joining their three great Bordeaux estates, Ch Rauzan Segla, Ch Canon and Ch Berliquet. This is something very special. The island is a national park just off the Côte d’Azur, in sight of the Fort de Brégancon, formerly the French Presidents’ summer residence. A mere four miles long and two miles wide, it is car-free bar that of the local policeman responsible for the 200 islanders! The domaine itself is 30 hectares of organic vineyards thriving on dry, stony, granitic and limestone soils, benefitting from the fresh cooling sea winds and wonderful Mediterranean sunshine. What better conditions could there be for the local grape varieties to excel: Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Syrah for the rosé and Rolle for the white?

Region

Côtes de Provence

France's most extensive appellation, the Côtes de Provence stretches from Toulon in the west to near Cannes in the east. The vineyards run from the sun-baked Mediterranean coast up into the Alpine foothills with their cooling influence. Rose wine accounts for four fifths of Côtes de Provence production. Formerly a drink for holidays only, consumption of rose is on the rise in both France and the UK and and the wines are more and more serious. Typically Cinsaut and Grenache are the most popular grape varieties. There is also a renewed focus on producing higher quality red wine by incorporating Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah into the blends, although combined they can only represent 30% of the blend. Plantings of indigenous white varieties are also increasing especially in the coastal areas.
