An excellent start to our second day tasting at Chateau Latour. A big wine with lots of personality and grandeur. The chateau and the tower were beautiful in the misty morning light against the vineyards.
We continued our tour of Pauillac with the two Pichons. Ch Pichon Lalande is a stunning chateau with an incredible view of the surrounding vineyards.
However, we nearly lost Jamie among the statues of this chateau. The resemblance was quite startling.
Ch Pichon Baron is literally across the road from Pichon Lalande and looked magnificent. The wine was splendid and among my favourites of the trip.
We continued our tour of St Julien with a quick stop at Ch Léoville Poyferré before lunch at Ch Léoville Barton. Johnny has known Anthony Barton very well for many years and he is a fantastic supporter of Goedhuis.
After a quick glimpse at his beautiful garden we were whisked inside to enjoy a delicious and well aged glass of Gosset Reserve NV with his family. Lunch was no small affair and we were all treated impeccably well and of course were served remarkable wines: a 1986 Langoa Barton and a 1989 Léoville Barton.
With our tummies full and a spring in our step Ch Talbot was next, followed by the Pauillac chateaux of Grand Puy Lacoste and Mouton. Ch Pontet Canet was our final stop and after tasting the 2009 we were given a quick tour of the grounds. They have started to use horses in their efforts to become a biodynamic domaine. The horses work the soil and avoid compaction which they hope will improve the quality of the wine even further.
