Hatzidakis | The best of the best of Santorini Assyrtiko

We’re delighted to offer another Greek masterpiece: Hatzidakis’ exceptional Assyrtiko, grown in its spiritual home of Santorini.

Following the untimely death of Haridimos Hatzidakis in 2017, his family have continued his exacting standards, including the traditional, labour-intensive kouloura vine training and stainless-steel vinification, allowing the grape and Santorini’s extraordinary terroir to shine.

We’re offering two wines from the range: Familia, a beautiful introduction to the estate, and Skitali, a limited release born from lees-ageing experiments, exploring different expressions of Assyrtiko and its ageing potential.

Sourced from plots across the island that are either owned by their family, or by viticulturists that the Hatzidakises consider family in the village of Pyrgos, this is a beautiful introduction to the range. Lemon balm, spearmint, white flowers, and ginger emerge from the glass. On the palate, tensile acidity is accompanied by apple skin and flint on the palate, leading into a salty, mineral lift on the finish. This is approachable and joyous now, and delivers everything you could want and more from top notch Assyrtiko; one to crack open while your Skitali waits patiently in the cellar.

The nose opens with oyster shell, green apple, beeswax, and a smoky, flinty note imparted from Santorini's volcanic soils. Assyrtiko's trademark razor sharp acidity drives the palate from start to finish, balanced out by a mouth-filling texture imparted from time on lees, which lends generosity and weight. It finishes incredibly saline, reminding you of the sea breeze constantly whistling through the vineyard. This is a serious, saline, and sophisticated Assyrtiko that could only come from the variety’s spiritual home of Santorini.
