Our final morning tasting in Bordeaux started in St Estèphe at the prestigious Cos d’Estournel cellars.
There has been a lot in the press recently about Cos’ brand new cellars and so I was really keen to see them. I have to say they are truly spectacular- a massive space that has had no expense spared at all.
Ch Montrose was our next stop in St Estèphe. The wines were great and displayed true St Estèphe power. Lafite was next in Pauillac (of course outstanding) followed by Palmer. Ch Palmer is another one of those fairytale chateaux with beautiful gardens and grounds. Alter Ego de Palmer and Ch Palmer were among my favourite wines of the vintage- fresh and understated.
Our final stop was the very lavish Ch Ducru Beaucaillou, positioned on the top of a small hill with flags flying on all turrets. Everything about this chateau is extravagant and ornate. Even the bathrooms are an experience.
And so our trip came to an end. We dashed off for a spot of lunch and to catch our plane. Luckily we landed in the UK just before the volcano started to erupt. A successful trip!
