After a fantastic New Year on the peninsula we moved on further east to the Walker Bay region. We decided to take the coastal road en route to Hermanus, which took us much longer than we thought. If you ever drive along this route, make sure you stop off and take a look at the penguins at Betty’s Bay.
For those who like rustic g̨tes in rural France, in the middle of nowhere, on a working farm Рthen Stanford Hills is the place for you! You can be greeted by a Rhodesian ridgeback and have the benefit of being the only one at night on the farm/winery under the most amazing stars.
Stanford Hills has only been going for a few years but already export the majority of their wines. We really liked their Sauvignon- light, good acidity- and after a stressful drive that culminated in a 2 km dirt-track, it tasted even better. Their Pinotage, great with a brai, has been awarded 4 stars in the John Platter guide for the last 3 vintages.
The Walker Bay region is a great place to visit with beautiful vineyards and striking beaches. If you visit the region at the right time of year then you can even see Whales cruising along in the bay.
There is much excitement about the Walker Bay area and many wineries are setting up in the area. The cool ocean breezes, coming from the Antarctic, help to cool down the grapes in an otherwise hot climate. This leads to more elegant wines and Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are leading the way.
