Wine Advocate, January 2024, Score: 89-91
The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin La Brunelle is the star at the communal level this year, revealing aromas of cherries, sweet red berries and plums mingled with peonies and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered palate that's supple, seamless and lively.
-
Burghound, January 2024, Score: 89-91
This is aromatically similar to the Corvée but with the additions of more evident spice nuances plus a violet top note. The sleek and nicely voluminous flavors possess a caressing texture along with focused power on the lingering finish where a touch of wood emerges. This offers very good quality for its level in a package that should repay up to a decade of keeping. Drink 2030+

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin La Brunelle comes from a parcel constituting a majority of the lieu-dit that lies adjacent to La Corvées. This has slightly darker fruit on the nose by comparison. Again, it’s just a little oaky, though most of that should be soaked up with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy opening, quite spicy on the entry, with moderate depth. Very smooth in texture, though like the Corvée, the Pinoté of this Gevrey is lost a little in the oak regime (around 70% new) on the finish. Drink 2024-2031

JMO, November 2023, Score: 90-92
The other of two vineyards between the house and the main road, this time on drier soil. A deeper purple with riper fruit. Succulent deep cherries. Heady up front, the cherries are at maximum ripeness but staying in bounds. Not the same unwelcome super saturation as 2020. A useful little point of acidity to finish. All very much in red fruit, cherry and strawberry to finish. Drink 2029-2035

Wine Advocate, January 2024, Score: 90-92
The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru delivers aromas of cherries, raspberries, licorice and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless palate that's ample and charming but also a touch ephemeral.
-
Burghound, January 2024, Score: 91-94
A more subtle though still easily perceptible application of oak is present on the slightly riper liqueur-like aromas of red and dark currant, floral wisps and a suggestion of smoked meat. The supple and caressing middleweight flavors possess a finer texture along with focused power on the impressively long finish where the supporting acidity is brighter though not drying. While qualitatively similar to the Clos de Vougeot, these are two very different wines. Drinking 2034+

Vinous, November 2023, Score: 90-92
The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from vines planted between 1982 and 2018 and is raised in 50% new oak. This has a perfumed bouquet with black cherry, wild strawberry, and light rose petal scents, and the terroir comes through more here than the Clos de Vougeot. The palate is very sweet on the entry, with a lot of sucrosity to the point where I wonder whether it might have been better to pick a little earlier. It’s quite seductive and very smooth, though just a bit heady on the finish. Probably best drunk between five and fifteen years. Drink 2027-2040

Wine Advocate, January 2024, Score: 92-94
The broadest-shouldered wine in the cellar is the 2022 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes, a full-bodied, ample and velvety wine redolent of dark berries, cherries, licorice and spices. Layered and concentrated, with lively acids and a saline finish, it shows promise.
-
Burghound, January 2024, Score: 91-94
Moderate wood suffuses the very ripe aromas of poached plum, warm earth and plenty of sauvage character. The sleek, delicious and vibrant if not especially dense medium-bodied flavors deliver solid depth and persistence on the more firmly structured finale where a touch of rusticity appears. I like the length and a few years of keeping should help to add depth. Drink 2034+

Vinous, November 2023, Score: 91-93
The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru contains vines planted as far back as 1927 (it was hitherto labeled as Vieilles Vignes) and sees around 80% new oak. This well-defined bouquet offers brambly red fruit, wild mint, and limestone touches. There’s good vigor here, and it feels more assimilated with the new oak than some of the Gevrey from Rebourseau. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins that seem finely knit. Mainly red fruit, quite precise with a touch of piquancy on the finish - this shouldn't need too long in bottle, yet has the substance to repay bottle age. This is worth keeping an eye on. From two separate parcels in the Clos de Vougeot: a larger central block of vines planted in 2011, most of which is sold to the négoce; the majority of this Vieilles Vignes cuvée comes from another block, of vines planted in 1927. Cask sample. Mid ruby. Juicy nose and palate of red fruits, raspberry, strawberry and cherry. Some sweetness from the oak, too, all balanced by that surprisingly pronounced acidity. This is now the sole cuvee under the domaine label, made from the 1927 plot plus the vines planted between 1968 and 1977 plantings. An attractive mid purple. Ripe soft red fruit on the nose with considerable density. This is well balance between the ripeness of the fruit and the tensile strength of the structure, with the same pleasing red fruit returning at the finish. Plenty of energy at the finish. Wine Advocate, January 2024, Score: 93-94
The 2022 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is the king of the cellar, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries and plums mingled with orange zest, spices, toasty new oak and peony. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and unctuous, with an ample core of fruit, rich structuring tannins and a pure, spicy finish, it shows promise.
-
Burghound, January 2024, Score: 92-95
Once again firm reduction overshadows everything but a touch of wood spice. The full-bodied, richer and more powerful flavors are, somewhat curiously, less refined on the hugely long, balanced and equally built-to-age finale. It's as though the Chambertin and the Clos de Bèze switched personalities as this is decidedly more robust than the Chambertin. Drinking 2037+

The 2022 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru comes from 0.33 hectares of vine planted in 1972 and 1978. Despite rigorous aeration, it has a slightly reticent nose: black rather than red fruit here and a touch of dried white flowers coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and fleshy texture, but it needs more grip, weight, and grandeur_ befitting one of the greatest vineyards in the world. It's enjoyable but not profound. Drink 2027-2042

A little darker, on the crimson purple cusp. The nose has more of the nobility which the Chambertin lacked. There is plentiful strawberry fruit, with a slightly darker note and a little spice behind. The fruit is situated more in the middle and the back of the palate, with a useful point of acidity helping the structure. Drink 2032-2040

From a parcel planted in 1956, the 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru exhibits notes of cherries, berries, licorice and spices framed by toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and textural, with an ample core of fruit, supple tannins and a perfumed finish, it's a strong effort for this improving estate.

Here too firm reduction and wood toast render the nose impossible to properly evaluate. The bright and delicious medium weight flavors also possess a gorgeous mouthfeel and an almost aggressive minerality that adds a sense of lift to the hugely long and quite firm finale. This is classy and refined thanks to the dense but fine-grained tannins. Lovely though I underscore that this is very much built-to-age. Drinking 2037+

The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru comes from 0.46 hectares planted in 1954 on the border with Clos-de-Bèze, neighboring Pierre Damoy. It has more complexity than the Clos-de-Bèze, but I am still seeking a sense of nobility that derives from this Grand Cru. It's a bit ephemeral compared to its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, well-judged acidity, and black cherries mixed with dark chocolate. I am prudent with my score because I can feel some heat on the finish and just a bit of VA. Drink 2025-2040

Mid crimson shading towards purple. We are back in the strawberry camp. Should it be more subtle? Quite rich, certainly ripe, perhaps needing more structure and less overt fruit. A helpful little point of acidity. There is depth here, but I would be disappointed at Chambertin prices. The fruit is too accessible and loaded at the front of the palate not the back.
