Here the nose is notably spicier if less earthy in character on the equally ripe though a bit more elegant aromas of various dark berries and violet hints. There is more restraint to the cooler and less powerful flavors that display only slightly more refinement before culminating in a solidly powerful and built-to-age finale. 2028+

A blend of Pitures and Mitans. Fine mid-crimson to purple in colour. This is leaner and more discreet than the village wine but with extra punch behind. Sweet cherry and raspberry fruit, especially at the back of the palate.

Azelia's 2016 Barolo San Rocco shows terrific density and richness, but it is less aromatically expressive than most of the other 2016s in the range. Readers will have to give this at least a few years in bottle for the tannins to soften. Even in the early going, though, the 2016 is deep, powerful and loaded with pedigree. Now that most of Azelia's wines are aged in cask, the influence of small French oak is especially evident. Drink 2023-2041.

The 2020 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion has a succulent bouquet of dark cherries, boysenberry and crushed violet scents, quite heady and bold for a second wine (even the second wine of a First Growth!). The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, pliant tannins that frame the pure black cherry, wild strawberry and black currant fruit. Veins of licorice appear toward the finish. There is a lot of density in this Le Clarence and a little more structure than usual, and it suits it well. Drink 2024 - 2040

Antonio Galloni, June 2021, Score: 91-93
The 2020 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is a jewel of a wine. Deep, powerful and structured, it captures all of the gravitas of the Grand Vin, but in a more accessible style. Gravel, leather, tobacco, cedar and dried herbs lend quite a bit of aromatic nuance to this powerhouse Pessac-Léognan. I very much like the intensity and drive here. Drink 2025 - 2035

Decanter, May 2021, Score: 92
Concentrated, with impact and punch. It has presence and barely takes a beat through the mid palate, as there is such a wall of blackberry and bilberry fruits. A brambly hedgerow feel, hard to argue with - but be aware that there is heat also; and this is a hedonistic wine. Harvest from 7th to 29th September. Drinking Window 2023 - 2036

Matthew Jukes, April 2021, Score: 18.5+
As a ‘second wine’, this is a monumental creation. As a standalone Pessac-Léognan red it is one of the finest of the vintage. But what I like most about 2020 Le Clarence is that it shows a completely different flavour, shape, texture, timbre and finish than its parent and this means that it is not one wine or the other which is the choice in this vintage – it is both. They are both absolutely unmissable. Dwelling on the red fruit side of the spectrum, Le Clarence has a Le Musigny quality about it and this is the first time I have ever written this sentence about a claret! As you may be able to tell, I love the complexity here and yet I must underline that you cannot even think about opening a bottle for twenty years. This is a slow burn Le Clarence and it is about as delectable and collectable as it gets.

Jancis Robinson, April 2021, Score: 17+
Mid purplish crimson. Rather simple, or at least uncommunicative, on the nose at present, though there is a beguiling combination of ripe fruit and stoniness (warm bricks?) on the palate which has impressive concentration. Comparing it with other celebrated Pessac-Léognans of the same vintage, it is clear that this has some magic dust – as it should considering how much more expensive it is. Lots of leathery tannin underneath but it is the integrity of the fruit that is so impressive. Drink 2029 – 2048

Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021, Score: 94-96
Forest leaf, cigar box, herbs, flowers, cherry pipe tobacco, forest scents and spice nuances start off the perfume. On the palate the wine is juicy, silky, fresh and vibrant with layers of fresh, sweet, vibrant, polished red fruits that linger. Elegance is the keyword here. This is probably the finest vintage of Le Clarence de Haut Brion ever produced. It is a great example of a baby Haut Brion. Enjoy this for the next 10-15 years while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop.

What a way to finish! This highlights the domaine’s huge success in 2019. The Geantets have a generous 0.45 hectare slice of this great Grand Cru, lying right next to Griotte Chambertin. Dark opaque colour, with lots of autumnal hedgerow fruit flavours and a touch of fresh fig and nutmeg. Reserved at the outset, but like an orchestral symphony it evolves, and the finish is a crescendo of flavours. Its colossal power sits quietly beneath the alcohol and bright fruit. Sensationally appealing, this is a wonderful example of a Grand Cru in every way.

Moderate but not intrusive wood surrounds the very spicy aromas of red and dark cherry, black raspberry, violet and an interesting background whiff of blood orange. The is impressive volume to the caressing, succulent and quite rounded big-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the firm tannic spine shaping the balanced finale where the structure become increasingly apparent as the finish sits on the palate. I very much like the complexity, and this too should amply repay extended cellaring. Drink: 2031+

Just like the Lansdale, the Terraces is made from the special Calera clone of Pinot Noir that gives this 2019 its splashes of vivid blue fruits to match the varietal’s typical creamy strawberry, soft raspberry and crunchy pomegranate. Tightly coiled for now, the rich fruit is sumptuously spiced with cinnamon, clove and dried violets. Perfectly balanced, its sleek structure and impressive acidity makes it a happy addition to the cellar. The vineyard was already being run under biodynamic tenets so it slotted in neatly with the regimen. It has a precise bouquet, refined and graceful with delicate lime and lemon thyme scents that unfold nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with appreciable balanced and purity. The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon is a child of the 2020 season, which was warm, early and low yielding, and the wines from the area have been decidedly structural, lushly fruited and powerful. All in all, they are excellent quality across the board, and this wine here is no exception. Dense tannins, layered with pink peppercorn, nori, blood, brine and bay leaf, were quite firm in this vintage, but with knowledge of how this wine ages, this is not a problem in the least. I've given it a conservative drinking window by decades, if stored well. Sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023-2055.

A legend of the Australian fine wine scene, with an enviable track record of ageable grandeur. Full-weighted, to be sure, yet far from obvious as the pummel of classy mocha oak and impeccably gleaned grape tannins expand and recoil with air. All class. Detailed, fine boned and juicy. Currant, bay leaf, graphite and hedgerow, evidencing Australia's propensity to promote a controlled lilt of greenness for lift and freshness, over the American tendency to massage it out. I far prefer the former approach. This will make fine old bones. Best after 2026.

This 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon is an effortless vintage from Moss Wood, although slightly unusual with 7% Petit Verdot (higher than the norm) and 3% Cabernet Franc (lower). It’s an old fashioned claret style, reserved yet precise and focused. It delivers black and red currants, violets and old cedar aromas. French oak relaxes and assures with a mid-weight palate defined by its powerful core of impressive fruit. What I love most is the structure. Very fine yet muscular tannins are beautifully integrated and deliver a finish of extreme length. A classic in the making that is already drinking superbly. Petit Verdot structure adds tension that will help this star age extremely well. Drink 2028-2040.

Medium ruby verging on purple in colour. Spicy red and black plum, cinnamon, clove, anise and a more savoury spice note akin to red chilli. Fresh, high acidity and fine-grained, moderate tannin. The 2021 Bernkasteler Lay Riesling GG offers a fascinating clear and flinty bouquet with Amalfi lemon notes and those of crushed stones. Round and supple but also pure and fresh on the palate, this is an elegant, refined and balanced Riesling with a long, intense and finely salty finish. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted as a sample at the domaine in July 2022. To be bottled in October. Drink 2026-2040.

This comes from a famous, steeply sloping vineyard in the middle section of the Nahe River. Grand Cru classified, Höllenpfad translates to ‘Path to Hell’, most likely a reference to the vertiginous gradient and warm red sandstone soils of this plot. Renowned for producing small, concentrated berries, this wine offers spicy, mineral fruit against a backdrop of gleaming acidity and tightrope tension. Drink 2025-2040+

The 2022 Riesling Roxheimer Höllenpfad im Mühlberg Grosses Gewächs is from a special, old parcel of 40-year-old Riesling within the stoniest, rockiest parts of the Permian sandstone of the Höllenpfad. A touch of yeast still plays with the ripe apricot fruit that shimmers shyly on the nose. A touch of white pepper later appears. The palate is stony yet rounded, structured by rockiness, with vivid glimmers of lemon oil, concentrated and increasingly zesty. It's pure yet has an increasingly insistent intensity, spraying with ripe lemon zestiness, white pepper and iron oxide. In the end, buffered lemon zest fills the mouth and mind. The 2022 is long, pure, zesty and insistent. Drink 2025-2050.

A perfumed, cool and airy nose features notes of ultra-elegant red currant, rose petal and lilac scents. There is a really lovely mouth feel to the almost delicate middle weight flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality on the delicious finish that exhibits just a hint of dryness that may very well be due to the recent bottling. 88/100 DRINK 2021+

Intense, clear and concentrated on the fine and pure nose, displaying a nutty aroma in the beginning. Rich, intense and concentrated on the palate, this BA is very sweet and oily textured but also highly refined and crystalline, with a long, stimulatingly salty, piquant and tensioned finish. It is very digestible already today, but again, the best is yet to come. I suppose the 2019 is even finer than the already world-class 2018, which I had almost a year ago. Drink 2025-2080.

This 1.1 hectare monopole vineyard makes an incredibly special Spätlese. Its proximity to the river gives it a distinctive microclimate, and the vineyard consistently produces some of the finest fruit in the estate. It has a citrus focus, but there is exoticism in the background that will emerge over time. There is a fleshy depth, yet in typical Dönnhoff style it remains impeccably pure and crystalline. The 2022 Riesling Oberhäuser Brücke Spätlese is from a site that combines weathered shale, weathered sandstone and volcanic formations, "but essentially the vines root in Tonschiefer or shale," Helmut says. It is not a steep site; in the valley, cold air flows at night, and the days are hot. This has the biggest day-night amplitude and is close to the river. The nose is of confounding aromatic complexity: green elements of citrus, think lime jelly, citrus leaf. The palate has a tropical intensity that brings passion fruit, lime, mango and much more intense sweetness that is always cut with vivid acidity. The 2022 is wonderfully exciting, hair-raising, almost joyful, or, as Helmut calls it, "crazy." Simply wonderful. Drink 2028-2050.

The proximity to the river of this precious monopole enables the most fabulous late harvest styles to be made. The definition of an ‘intellectual wine’, Anne Donnhoff says, “you have to listen to Brucke because it tells you so much, but not in the first instance”. This is impeccably fresh, with an incredible concentration of sweetness, acid, and flavour complexity. The perfectly poised citrus and orchard fruit is cradled by a vibrant acidity. This will live for decades but will forgive the overzealous. Be patient… if you can! Drink 2030 – 2050+

The 2022 Riesling Oberhäuser Brücke Auslese is a rarity. The dry year was not one to favor botrytis. "It was not an Auslese year, but we always have the ambition to harvest a little Auslese in these two vineyards, namely Brücke and Hermannshöhle," Helmut says. They manage to pick fruit with a little botrytis, selected relatively early. The nose seems more toned down than the Spätlese, yet underneath are glimmers of passion fruit, with its lovely greenish, tart notion and tropical overtones. The palate has the same tropical sweetness, vivid, aromatic, alluring and seductive. It's concentrated rather than colored by botrytis. Very pure, linear, pristine and exquisite. This is an elixir-like liquid on tiptoe, pirouetting, trailing tropical perfume and finishing in citrus. This is about brightness, not weight. Drink 2028-2050.

From shale, the 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese is subtle on the nose. The merest flicker of reduction precedes distant perfumes of ripe pear, stone fruit and lifted, serene citrus peel in the green-to-yellow spectrum. The palate holds rounded sweetness, seemingly edged by tealeaf, stoniness and lime peel. The citrus takes over, providing serene and profound aromatics, lasting, elegant and pure. Despite the sugar, sweetness almost stops registering in these alluring flavors that push freshness much more than sweetness. The 2022 is a sleeper, slow and profound, but with proper mileage.

A very special Spätlese from arguably the Nahe’s finest vineyard. “This starts very quietly and gently with a wafting cloud of floral aromas, but then your gaze is pulled into the base of this Gothic cathedral window, pulling you ever further upward until you are staring at the heavens. Supernatural energy and vitality, the wet stone character cascading over your palate at the super-long finish. Doesn’t want to stop!

The 2022 Riesling Oberhäuser Leistenberg Kabinett beckons with a white peach hint on the nose. The palate is serene, edging its peachiness with lemon fruit and zest, tingling with stone and coating the mouth with an astringent, delicious acidity. This lovely high-wire act juxtaposes 9+ g/l of acidity with full-fruited, citric sweetness. The sinuses almost short-circuit between acidity and fruit. Helmut says, "I would never have thought in that summer that this would work. I never expected this." This is the benefit of this lateral valley and its east-exposition. To him, Kabinett is a "particular talent" of this vineyard. The 2022 is simply lovely, balanced, vivid and delicious. Drink 2023-2045.

From their steep hillside vineyards on Pritchard Hill, the 2014 Proprietary Red IX Estate is an old-fashioned Médoc blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, but with some Cabernet Franc (rarely seen in the Médoc these years) as well as Merlot and Petit Verdot. Striking aromatics of violets, forest floor, loamy soil nuances, blueberry, black raspberry and blackberry soar from the glass of this spectacular 2014. The acidity seems reasonable but on the lower side, the texture is magnificent, and the overall purity and equilibrium flawless. This is a wine pushing, even demanding, a three-digit score once again, but I’m holding back – at least for now. This magnificent effort from Colgin should drink beautifully for 25-30 years. Drink 2016-2046.

This is notably more aromatically elegant with its pretty nose of extract of red cherry, raspberry, pomegranate and plum where added breadth is present in the form of spice, tea, earth and sandalwood hints. There is that lovely sense of underlying tension present on the medium weight plus flavors that display both stone and soil undertones that continue onto the balanced, classy and stylish finish. This is terrific though despite the refined mouth feel there is a very firm tannic spine that will require plenty of time to fully resolve. Patience required. Drink: 2028+.

2019 was a late-ripening vintage at Colgin’s IX Estate on Pritchard Hill. Much was picked during the third week of October, allowing winemaker Allison Tauzier to perform a little more co-fermentation. The 2019 IX Estate is opaque purple-black in color, needing a little coaxing to unlock notions of blackberry preserves, baked plums and crème de cassis, plus hints of pencil lead, star anise, wild sage and Indian spices, leading to a fragrant waft of lavender. Built like a brick house, the opulent, full-bodied palate is perfectly framed by super firm, exquisitely ripe tannins and a fantastic acid line to give lift throughout the long earthy finish. So finely knit together, this multi-layered, seamless beauty is just breathtaking.

Medium-to full-bodied, incredibly deep and fresh, with fine tannins that carry you deep down into the finish. It tells you its great, but makes you spend time in order to understand it. Vinous, October 2021, Score: 98
The 2019 IX Estate is supremely elegant and polished. All the strong mineral and savory accents typical of this site are present, but they are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. Bright and chiseled, the 2019 is focused and full of character right out of the gate. Dried herb, tobacco, chocolate and mineral accents lend nuance throughout. My impression is that the 2019 is still recovering from its recent bottling. It is already stellar, but it will be even more stellar in time.

The IX Estate merges the merits of Tychson Hill and Cariad. The lush and perfumed nose displays brambly, blackberry aromas with a hint of mocha. The attack is fresh and limpid, with good acidity and ripe tannins that give texture and cut. It may lack a little drive, but it's elegant and fine-grained, with a balanced and persistent finish.

The 2022 Gruaud Larose was picked from 7 to 24 September and includes a little more pressed wine this year: 13.5% exclusively from Cabernet Sauvignon due to the quality. This latest vintage matured for a planned 18 months in 95% new oak. Significantly, this is the first year under organic certification (notice two storks on the label signifying this. Maybe they are carrying a little Gruaud baby?) At 13.64% alcohol, this is less than many other properties for those seeking slower intoxication. It has an impressive bouquet with pure blackberry and raspberry fruit, black truffle and sous-bois scents. I am impressed by its delineation and focus; frankly, these are the nicest aromatics I've encountered for a while at this address. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins. I cannot remember a Gruaud at this nascent stage that exhibits this level of energy and tension deriving from the Cabernet Sauvignon extracted at the beginning of vinification. There's much more precision here. Mineral-driven toward the finish, this easily surpasses vintages made at the estate over the last decade and more. Perhaps like the legendary Gruauds of old (1982, 1961, 1928, even 1870)? Gruaud reborn. Drink 2028-2070

Antonio Galloni, January 2025, Score: 95
Deep, layered and resonant, with tremendous persistence, the 2022 Gruaud Larose is a wine of notable pedigree and class. Black cherry, plum, menthol, sage, licorice and orange peel build in a wine of real substance and finesse. Swaths of tannin wrap around the long, sustained finish. This is every bit as impressive as it was en primeur.

Antonio Galloni, April 2023, Score: 93-95
The 2022 Gruaud-Larose is 83% Cabernet, the most Cabernet ever for the Grand Vin here. A huge, opulent wine, Gruaud-Larose offers up an exotic mélange of blackberry fruit, cloves, espresso, licorice, bittersweet chocolate and incense. This full-throttle Saint-Julien is not exactly subtle, but its balance is impeccable. Readers should expect an unctuous, dense wine with tons of concentration, a good deal of new oak and all the pedigree to hold it all together. Drink 2028-2052.

Wine Advocate, April 2023, Score: 94-96+
The progress at this estate continues with the terrific 2022 Gruaud Larose, a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc that unfurls in the glass with deep aromas of minty blackberries, violets and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's elegantly muscular, with a broad attack that segues into a concentrated mid-palate framed by supple, powdery tannins. Richer and more brooding than its 2020 and 2019 counterparts, it confirms Gruaud's return to the Saint-Julien élite. Around one-third of the production made it into the grand vin this year, the château's first with organic certification.

Decanter, April 2023, Score: 97
Another excellently consistent wine from Gruaud in 2022 that gives terroir typicality with crystalline purity and such overall charm. Smooth and supple, silky but firm, generous but serious. Gorgeous acidity keeps the palate lifted and fresh while the concentrated fruit and quite present tannins give the structure and frame. I love the detail and purity, powerful and strong but refined. Direct with energy and juicy, vibrant acidity. Mineral, graphite and liquorice aspects grip the palate and linger on the finish with soft spices. Has a very moreish quality with approachability but the racy core and intense backbone suggests long ageing potential. 3.8pH. 3.45g/l total acidity. 40% production. 13% press wine (only Cabernet Sauvignon).

Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 18.5+
Château Gruaud Larose (2ème Cru Saint-Julien) 83 Cabernet Sauvignon, 14 Merlot, 3 Cabernet Franc 95% new oak 13.64% alc This wine has a slightly menacing edge, and the stats and flavours bear this out. Big Cab, big oak, keen alcohol (particularly considering the vintage) and one of the most unwavering and nononsense flavours of the year make this an unnervingly impressive wine. While I don’t love it, as in really love it, and it is not pretty, it is awe-inspiring. Like brutalist architecture, and I suppose the odd-looking watchtower in the vineyard at Gruaud, I admire these buildings but don’t love them. So it follows that I greatly admire this wine with its naked spice, intricate sinew and bulletproof carapace of fruit, and it will age metronomically, and I hope that one day it will find tenderness and relax a little, but I am not betting on it. If you are lining up to buy a case, make sure that you bookend this purchase with two more kindly and more relaxed wines because you will need them when you come to open a bottle of 2022 GL.

Jane Anson, April 2023, Score: 96
Spicy, intense and concentrated, and yet delivers juicy drinkability from beginning to end, not an easy balance to achieve in 2022. The vintage trace comes through in notes of tobacco, dried herbs, cloves and sandalwood, with tannic build up through the palate, but it is balanced by fresh mint leaf, cassis, bilberry, cocoa bean, and salinity. Firm tannic architecture, excellent quality. 33% of production in the 1st wine, 95% new oak. mint,

LPB, April 2023, Score: 94-96
A blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Gruaud Larose is deep garnet-purple in color. It needs some coaxing to bring out scents of wild blueberries, blackcurrant jelly, and black raspberries, with touches of garrigue, dried mint, underbrush, and dusty soil. The medium-bodied palate is tightly wound with bright, youthful black fruits and evocative mineral sparks, framed by grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing earthy. 40% of the year's production went into the first wine.

Goedhuis, November 2023
This sits under Jadot’s negoce label but is the fruit from a contract with a highly respected grower in the village of Chassagne. The exceptional quality of this superb cuvée highlights its excellent provenance. A layer of panna cotta and jersey cream, this has the unctuous richness and breadth so true to Chassagne, held perfectly in check by a rustic, chewy minerality on the finish. Multi layered and tremendous quality.

Goedhuis, January 2024
Morgeot is the vilage’s largest Premier Cru with many subdivisions and nuances but, in essence, produces full textured wines which are a brilliant portrayal of Chassagne Montrachet. It opens with perfumed white peach and peony. A structured style, with breadth and volume, this is lifted by flavours of grapefruit and lemon zest, and a lively touch of acid freshness on the finish.

Jasper Morris MW, December 2023, Score: 91-93
4 barrels from their own vines in Clos Charreau, plus one more barrel purchased. An attractive pale lemon and lime. A fine generosity of fruit with a refreshing backbone, slightly lime infused. Overall, this treads with light feet while still representing the long-term potential of Morgeot. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2023.
