En Primeur | Burghound Recommends

Although the field of serious Burgundy critics is becoming ever more crowded, Allen Meadows (Burghound) still stands out as the original and the best. So, when he releases his review of a new vintage it is worth sitting up and taking notice. He is positively rapturous, commenting that the 2019 wines are: “Ripe, fresh, concentrated and very high-quality.” If you have not yet dipped a toe in the fabulous Burgundy 2019 pool, now is the moment.

The 2020 L'If has a slightly more savory bouquet than the preceding 2020 Quintus, perhaps with a higher proportion of Cabernet Franc (16% in this blend). The complexity really comes through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and quite saline, with firm tannins and hints of oyster shells toward the long, refined finish. This fans out wonderfully. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2020 L'If is precocious on the nose, with macerated black cherries, crushed violet, and blueberry emerging with time, all very well-defined and focused. The oak is nicely integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a little fleshier than its stablemate L'Hêtre. A pinch of white pepper towards the second half and an almost sedate, harmonious pastille-like finish. This should be afforded 4-5 years in bottle. Drink 2025-2040

  • Neal Martin, May 2021, Score: 93-95

The 2020 L’If is the first to include the Cabernet Franc that Jacques Thienpont planted four years ago, representing 16% of the blend this year, the remainder is Merlot. It has a more open nose than the Le Pin tasted alongside, a mélange of red berry fruit, mint, iodine and a dab of liquorice. That Cabernet Franc lends a little pepperiness. The palate is very well balanced with seamlessly integrated new oak, plush and rounded. A more sensual wine than Le Pin this year, forward and generous with a ripe and very pure, mineral-driven finish. This will be difficult to resist, so don’t say I didn’t warn you. Drink 2026 - 2045

  • Antonio Galloni, December 2022, Score: 97

The 2020 L’If is dense, powerful and explosive to the core. A rush of black cherry fruit, chocolate, graphite, cloves and lavender saturates the palate. This powerful, dense Saint-Émilion is all muscle and brawn today. There is no shortage of intensity, but all of that energy is directed inwards at this stage. Huge tannins and bright acids need time to soften, but this is impressive. Readers should expect a big, big wine. Drink 2030-2050

  • Antonio Galloni, June 2021, Score: 95-97

The 2020 L'If is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. In most vintages so far, L'If has been a dense, textured Saint-Émilion. In 2020, all of that energy seems directed toward extreme verticality rather than heft. I have to say, it’s a style I like a lot. Bright acids and persistent tannins drive a core of red/purplish fruit, while floral, spice and mineral-drenched accents linger. The 2020 is a blend of 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc, picked on 9/16, 9/24 and 9/26 for the Merlot and 10/1 for the Franc. This is the first vintage that includes fruit from a new parcel in the Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse district. A statuesque, captivating beauty, L'If is loaded with potential. I loved it. Drink 2030 - 2055

On the Morey St Denis side of the village of Gevrey lying just below Grand Cru Charmes Chambertin, this is a very rewarding wine. A little bolder in depth and density than the Carougeots, it combines the layered weight and structure of a classical Gevrey, with some deep dark morello cherry and currant flavours in harmony with hints of charm and opulence more akin to a Morey and its neighbouring vineyard. Full bodied, with layers of depth it can be approached now, but will also benefit from additional bottle age.

This is one of Gevrey’s finest 1er Crus, huge respected by the senior vignerons in the village. It is only less recognised because of its smallness in size, 2.5 ha, and having only 5 owners who make the wine. Brilliantly positioned above Grand Crus Chambertin Clos de Beze and alongside Ruchottes Chambertin, this is a full, deep and succulent wine. Flavours of summer pudding, laced with a touch of liquorice and vanilla pod, the depth of fruit coats the mouth. A degree of muscle giving a sensation of Grand Cru distinction, carefully tempered by the nuances of wild berry fruits and given harmony by the sweetness of flavours so typical of the vintage and a mouth-watering freshness on the finish. Quite excellent.

Nearly as good as the la Côte Blonde, the 2016 Cote Rotie La Belle Helene is plump, round and full in the mouth, yet it lacks some of the former wine's exotic perfume. It still shows lovely purity, with baskets of ripe red berries, a plush, creamy mouthfeel and a long finish. It's a terrific wine that suffers only by comparison. With its terrific concentration and balance, it should drink well for two decades or more.

Ex-Château Margaux winemaker Vincent Millet was rightly proud of his team for their continued work reinvigorating Ch Calon Ségur, in a year that was climatically the polar opposite of 2021. The summer heat isn’t perceptible on the nose in any way. Initially closed but dense; scents of warm cherry, blossom, and ripe plum-stone drift from the glass, wrapped in cedar and crushed stone. In the mouth there’s a cool succulence, yet enough weight to balance the firm leathery tannins, and crunchy fresh acidity. A bitter chocolate edge from the oak rounds off the mid-palate, leading to a fine-grained conclusion.

  • Neal Martin, January 2025, Score: 95

The 2022 Calon Ségur is a wine that I found "uncompromising" when I tasted it at en primeur. Now that the wine is in bottle, it has a strident bouquet that marches from the glass with blackcurrant, bilberry, cedar and pine aromas. It’s very well defined and quite classic in style with finely chiseled tannins. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and a little more saline than it showed out of barrel. Indeed, it has a tad more elegance now, though it still harks back to some of the classic postwar wines that I tasted in the past—in a good way. Very fresh on the finish, this is a sophisticated Saint-Estèphe born to give years of drinking pleasure, but my word, give it at least a decade before entertaining the idea of opening a bottle.

  • Neal Martin, April 2023, Score: 94-96

The 2022 Calon-Ségur was cropped at 26hL/ha compared to 36hL/ha last year. Matured for 20 months in new oak, it has a well-defined bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, cedar and subtle tobacco scents. The 2022 is tight at first but opens with aeration (winemaker Vincent Millet remarked how the wine was much more expressive the week I tasted it in mid-April compared to the previous week). The palate is classically styled with impressive mid-palate depth. With strict tannins and multi-layered graphite-infused black fruit, this is reminiscent of some postwar Calon-Ségur's I have tasted. I wonder if slightly less vin de presse would have been better? Uncompromising, perhaps that might be its virtue, but it means that patience will be required. Drink 2027-2055

  • Antonio Galloni, January 2025, Score: 92+

The 2022 Calon Ségur is a young, raw powerhouse with huge tannins. Today, I find the 2022 impenetrably compact and hard to read. Then again, Calon Ségur was quite similar en primeur, so I can't say I am terribly surprised. For the time being, the 2022 is somewhat of a mystery.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2023, Score: 91-93

I tasted the 2022 Calon Ségur two times during my recent trip to Bordeaux. On both occasions it was forbiddingly tannic, much moreso than most wines of the year. Dark-toned fruit, gravel, cured meat, leather, spice and tobacco lend intensity, but the incisive nature of the tannins never settles down. Perhaps élevage will help. We will see. My impression is that the property really struggles in excessively hot years. Drink 2030-2052.

  • Wine Advocate, April 2023, Score: 96

The 2022 Calon-Ségur is another superb wine from this historic Saint-Estèphe third growth that began a comprehensive renaissance the better part of a decade ago. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis and blackberries mingled with hints of fresh mint, burning embers, licorice and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with terrific depth at the core, supple tannins and a long, saline finish. The blend consists of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Vincent Millet observed that "when you tasted the Merlot, you were under the impression that you were tasting Cabernet."

  • James Suckling, April 2023, Score: 95-96

A very juicy red with redcurrant and creme de cassis as well as hints of nutmeg and cloves. It's full and polished with very pretty tannins that show length and focus. Traditional and typical for Calon with the tannin structure. A little closed today. But serious structure.

  • Decanter, April 2023, Score: 96

Rich and vibrant on the nose, smells concentrated and alcoholic. Crisp and clean on the palate however with bite to the cherry, plum and blackcurrant fruit alongside a hint of sweet strawberry and herbal raspberry on the mid palate that gives some instant energy before the clear concentration and heft of the wine shows through. Not so much in the texture but in the ripe flavours, cool minty and stone edged tannins and clear liquorice and clove spice. Still taught but detailed with elements of generosity. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 3.65pH. A yield of 26hl/ha. Ageing 17 months, 30% new oak.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 19+

2022 is yet another incredible creation from Calon, and this time it packs more spice into its makeup than I have seen before. It appears that the Merlot has soaked up the barrel tones on the front palate, and then Cabernet takes up the baton on the middle palate and finish. They had very low yields at Calon. The berries were 20% smaller than usual, so this wine and its siblings are densely flavoured, luxurious and exotic. The key to this wine’s success is the careful handling that ensured the fruit gave up its perfume and flavours without any unwanted astringency. Despite the heat wave temperatures during the day, night-time temperatures were low, so the acidity is fine and crisp. This means there is tension throughout this wine, and it is intense, powerful and lusty but not heavy. This is a stunning, stylish and super-glossy creation for a wine of these dimensions, and it will shock Calon lovers with its bravado and generosity.

  • Jeb Dunnuck, April 2023, Score: 97-99

A wine that's going to flirt with perfection, the 2022 Château Calon Ségur is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, harvested between September 12 and 26, from yields of 40 hectoliters per hectare. Its deep purple hue is followed by a heavenly bouquet of cassis, smoke tobacco, flowery incense, and toasted spices. This ripe, sexy, full-bodied beauty has ultra-fine tannins, a layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and a great finish. Its tannins, as well as its overall balance and purity, are just about off the charts, and this remarkable effort shows how successful the northern part of the Médoc was in 2022. Bravo!

  • Jane Anson, April 2023, Score: 94

This is powerful, underlining how much last year's more softly sculpted wine was a departure from recent vintages of Calon, and back in my mind to the complicated 2018 vintage, where it was overly marked by the heat of the vintage. This is full on concentrated fruit, with strong tannins that build through the palate. Plenty of complexity with black truffles, cassis, olive paste, sandalwood and fresh mint on the finish, along with cloves and cinnammon spice. 3.8ph, 100% new oak, 26hl/h yields. 53% Grand Vin, higher than usual. Vincent Millet technical director. Harvest September 6 to 27.

Once again showing how great terroir, and a family winemaking heritage stretching back 12 generations, can make one of the best wines in the world. Walnut, cedar, sweet spice, ripe bilberry, blackcurrant and cool plum all rise from the glass. There’s such depth here. On the palate it’s supple, soft and sweet, so gentle on the approach, yet with high concentration and a counterpoint of tart black cherry juice towards the mid palate. The bracing acidity dovetails beautifully with the fine-grained tannins.

The 2022 Ausone, which was the earliest-picked ever on September 5 (although that is later than Cheval Blanc) has another very intense bouquet with layers of plush blackberry, blueberry, crushed violet and incense aromas that are beautifully entwined with the 100% new oak. Hints of blood orange emerge with a few minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins and perfectly pitched acidity. The slightly higher proportion of Cabernet Franc imparts a touch more pepperiness toward the finish. You can feel this on your tongue long after it has departed. There is a surfeit of freshness on the finish. This is an outstanding Ausone that can look forward to a very long future.

  • Neal Martin, April 2023, Score: 95-97.5

The 2022 Ausone was picked from 5 to 30 September and matured for 20 months in French oak. These aromatics take a little time to open in the glass. Once they do, they are precise with wilted iris flowers infusing the black fruit and background pencil box and incense hints. The palate is medium-bodied with silver bead acidity threaded through the blackberry and bilberry fruit. Fresh and focused, this Ausone possesses a structured finish with a pinch of black pepper on the finish. Elegant in style, this Ausone almost creeps up in you and seduces, intellectual and persistent in the mouth. Upon departing, I couldn't help wondering if I had witnessed this Saint-Émilion demonstrates its full potential, hence the plus sign against my score. 14.4% alcohol. Drink 2030-2065

  • Antonio Galloni, January 2025, Score: 96

Often a wine of allure, the 2022 Ausone is a brooding powerhouse. Dark-toned fruit, leather, cedar, espresso, dried herbs and chocolate offer palate-staining intensity and volume. I expect the 2022 will require many years to come together, as the tannins are imposing today. This rich, exotic Saint-Émilion needs time. Drink 2032-2072

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2023, Score: 95-97

The 2022 Ausone is dense, powerful and quite brooding in demeanor. Dark-toned fruit, spice, leather, licorice and dried herbs add to an impression of somber intensity. In so many vintages Ausone is immediately alluring, but the 2022 is a potent, backward wine that is going to require many years to be at its finest. The blend is equal parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Harvest took place between September 5 and 9 for the Merlot and September 21 and 27 for the Cabernet Franc. The 2022 is a decidedly hedonistic Ausone.

  • Wine Advocate, March 2025, Score: 95+

The 2022 Ausone opens in the glass with a brooding bouquet of raspberry preserve, licorice, rose petals and creamy new oak. Full-bodied, deep and dense, it's layered and textural, with a sweet core of fruit framed by powdery, youthfully grippy tannins, concluding with a discreetly heady finish. It's a serious, structured Ausone that will require a bit of patience.

  • Wine Advocate, April 2023, Score: 94-96+

A blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Ausone unwinds in the glass with aromas of plums, raspberries and cherries complemented by hints of crushed mint and spices, framed by a lavish patina of creamy new oak. Full-bodied, layered and rather muscular, it's deep and concentrated, its vibrant core of fruit framed by a serious chassis of rich, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. Given its imposing levels of structuring extract, it will require patience.

  • James Suckling, April 2023, Score: 97-98

This is really open with bright and flamboyant aromas of cassis and cherries. Blueberries. Some peaches as well. I don't remember a young Ausone like that. Full-bodied with flamboyant fruit and energy. Very fine tannins. They are there but you don't feel them. Supple but very fruity. And intensely fruity at the end.

  • Decanter, April 2023, Score: 96

Quite intense nose, strongly perfumed and scented with purple flowers and a mix of red and black fruit. Fragrant with chocolate, tobacco, cedar, cinnamon, crushed stones and liquorice. Aromatically very inviting. Plush and sapid, tannins are ripe but the acidity gives it real tension so you get some intensity of texture and sharpness of fruit on the palate making it a bit serious and tense right now though with lovely detail and lots of precision in terms of tannins and fruit. Mouthwatering acidity is at the fore, really giving some zing and electricity to this while the crushed stones, liquorice and clove spice give the accents around the edges. Clear strength and concentration, such power underneath - you do feel the heat from the alcohol (15.4%!) but the acidity and soft mineral elements help keep the balance and frame though it’s not as demonstrably mineral as some years. Acidity does settle and this expands slowly - keeping the linearity and sense of focus but also giving hints to its power and ageability. Sculpted and well delivered, characterful and confident with long ageing potential. Long finish with graphite, pencil lead and toasted spices on the finish. 3.57pH 85% grand vin, 20,000 bottles. Harvest 5 and 9 September for Merlot, 21 and 27 September for Cabernet Franc. A yield of 38hl/ha. Potential upscore in bottle.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 19+

Bright, floral, plummy and perfumed, this is a stunningly pure Ausone with a buoyant front palate and a clean, long, grainy and subtle finish. It is perfectly proportioned, not as intense nor as concentrated as many, making up for this lack of grunt by showcasing precision and beauty. Plum and cherry-themed, this is a sensationally classy wine. The depth of aromatics, which is amazingly open and ready for inspection, is staggering. 2022 Ausone is all about the perfume right now, and I expect the palate to follow once its shackles are removed.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2023, Score: 18

Unusually aromatic at this early stage. Complex floral and red- and dark-fruit notes. Uncompromisingly dense with plentiful but fine tannins. Smooth texture. No hard edges but firm and persistent. Plenty of potential. (James Lawther MW). 15%. Drink 2032 – 2055

  • Jeb Dunnuck, April 2023, Score: 96-98

The Grand Vin from this hallowed terroir is an even split of Cabernet Franc and Merlot that was fermented in wooden vats and will spend 20 months in new barrels. Its saturated purple hue is followed by an up-front, sexy, full-bodied Ausone offering a wealth of fruit as well as notes of black cherries, blueberries, chocolate, scorched earth, and an incredible sense of spring flowers. Concentrated and incredibly pure, with silky tannins on the palate, it has the texture and fruit to almost shine even now but should still evolve for 30 years or more.

  • Jane Anson, April 2023, Score: 98-100

Intense and concentrated, with fennel, aniseed and liqourice root. Where Chapelle d'Ausone celebrates a wave of opulence in the vintage, this focuses more clearly on black tea, slate, intense black chocolate. Precise and well cut, this is creamy and exuberant without sacrificing elegance and balance. Amazing depths of flavour and grip. A true En Primeur sample where you know you are a long long way from this being ready to drink. The first year, incidentally, of not Premier Grand Cru Classé A, although the ranking has not been featured on the label since 2012. No irrigation at Ausone. 100% new oak. Harvest September 5 to 27. 7.25ha. Conversion to organic farming since 2020, Philippe Baillarguet cellar master, Pauline Vauthier owner and winemaker. Potential 100.

The introduction of a third wine at Duhart shows the focus on quality at this estate in the Rothschild stable. Jean-Sebastien Philippe is so right when he says that “Cabernet Sauvignon was king” for them in 2021. This blend of 81% Cabernet and 19% Merlot has fine aromatics of blueberry and damson. It has wonderful tight Pauillac tension, excellent intensity combining plush mocha and dark berry flavours, and a focused freshness. So alive, this has great ageing potential.

The 2021 Duhart-Milon, which is aged in 50% new oak, has a clean, precise bouquet of mineral-driven black fruit and touches of pencil lead and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and focused, with sappy black fruit and fine depth. This is a typically classically styled Duhart-Milon, though it does not quite have the persistence to rank as a top-rank vintage. But it will appeal to those who appreciate old-school Pauillac. Drink 2026 - 2045

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2022, Score: 90-92

The 2021 Duhart-Milon is a potent, brooding wine. Dark fruit, herbs, licorice and incense fill out the layers nicely. The oak still needs time to come together, but that is what élevage is for. The 2021 is a serious Duhart. Whether or not it will acquire a bit more charm remains an open question. Drink 2028-2041

  • Wine Advocate, April 2022, Score: 91-93+

Incorporating fully 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Duhart-Milon unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cigar wrapper and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, lively and persuasively concentrated, with beautifully refined tannins and a long, penetrating finish, it's a classy, serious wine that reflects all the progress this estate has been making over the last decade.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2022, Score: 17

In contrast to the second wine, Moulin de Duhart, there has been an effort made to make Duhart a much more structured and intense style, and with the high levels of Cabernet, this is a stricter, more rigid red with a more pure and focussed cassis theme and more obvious oak, too. But the lighter frame makes it easy to identify, and the result is a refined wine with an immovable Pauillac identity. There is a historically low percentage of Merlot in this vintage, and some of the Cabernet from only five-year-old vines was deemed of sufficient quality to make the grade.

  • Wine Cellar Insider, April 2022, Score: 91-93

Flowers, black cherries, earth and a hint of coffee bean for the nose. On the medium-bodied palate, the wine is soft, fresh, gentle and elegant, with a focus on the purity in the fruit, and the refinement in the tannins in the mid-palate and in the finish. The wine is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot. This is the second vintage produced in the new cellars which helped a lot this year, due to the ability to vinify on a parcel by parcel basis. Drink from 2024-2042.

  • Jane Anson, April 2022, Score: 93

Precise and finessed black fruits here right from the first moments, this is high Cabernet Sauvignon, lovely black savoury fruits that suit the slighly serious feel of Duhart. Expect precision, strict tannins, straight lines, plenty of freshness but without the rusticity that you could find in older Duharts. About 15% press wine after careful extraction and a short maceration. A little more old school Duhart than we have seen over the past few years, but thoroughly enjoyable. 1st year organic conversion, 30hl/h yields.

The 2022 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande was picked 6 to 27 September at 30hL/ha, the drought chipping away so that one-third was eventually lost. This has 13.65% alcohol and pH of 3.80. There is 17.5% pressed wine, the highest ever. This has a subtle bouquet, not understated but it unfurls in the glass (unlike others that explode.) Blackberry and cedar, light touches of mint, a hint of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with a velvety texture with lovely balanced, gentle but insistent grip, slightly granular as it fans out with black fruit, cedar and light graphite notes. This is a very suave Pichon-Lalande that will age with style. Drink 2029-2065

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2023, Score: 96-99

The 2022 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is magnificent. In recent years, Estate Director Nicolas Glumineau has pushed Pichon Comtesse to the limit. Maybe even a bit too far. But the 2022 is in the end a super-classic wine that emphasizes mid-weight structure, aromatic presence and persistence more than size. Sweet floral, savory and mineral accents run through a core of ripe, racy red-toned fruit. All the elements are so well balanced. Tasted four times. Drink 2032-2062.

  • Wine Advocate, March 2025, Score: 100

The 2022 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has turned out even better in bottle than I anticipated, bursting from the glass with aromas of cassis and blackberries mingled with scents of licorice, violets and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, layered and enveloping, it's suave, seamless and complete, with faultless precision, pristine integration of tannin, controlled sweetness and a long, expansive finish. The 2022 manages to unite the sensuality that's the estate's calling card and the ripeness of the vintage on the one hand, with a sense of Pauillac classicism on the other, threading the needle to deliver one of the finest wines of the vintage and a benchmark Pichon Comtesse. It's a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc that spent 18 months in barriques (three months more than was formerly the case), two-thirds of which were new. As I wrote en primeur, there's more than a hint of the 1982 about this wine, and like the 1982, the 2022 will offer an exceptionally wide drinking window.

  • Wine Advocate, April 2023, Score: 97-99

The 2022 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one wine where a comparison with this estate's magical 1982 doesn't appear to be far-fetched. Wafting from the glass with deep aromas of cassis, plums, violets, rose petals, tobacco leaf and pencil shavings, it's full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with a layered, seamless core of fruit that largely conceals its chassis of powdery structuring tannin. Concluding with a long, expansive and beautifully perfumed finish, it's a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc that has the potential to equal or even surpass the 2019 and 2016 vintages at this address. It checks in at a very classical 13.6% alcohol and a rather high pH of 3.80.

  • James Suckling, April 2023, Score: 98-99

Featherlight but always there. Stealth in structure. Very vertical. Savory. Superb. 78% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot and 5% cabernet franc.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 19+

Château Pichon Longueville, Comtesse de Lalande (2ème Cru Pauillac) 78 Cabernet Sauvignon, 17 Merlot, 5 Cabernet Franc 8 There is an extra dimension of juiciness and ripeness here which is, of course, unavoidable in 2022. This fruit clarity and expression make this grand wine a somewhat sleeker and glossier model than of late. There is a profound depth of fruit here, and the oak enhances this fruit elevating the nose and bringing an air of splendour to the whole. While this is a somewhat expressive Lalande, all of the classical notes are buried in this wine’s core, and they can converse fluently at this early stage. It is like taking a roll call of the essential traits needed for a great wine, and the responses are all, ‘Yes, Sir’. This is a stunning wine, and behind all of the exuberance sits a battery of tannins that will propel it forward for a long time. It is simply stunning – this is a modern, expressive and memorable Pichon Lalande and will be a favourite vintage for decades to come.

  • Jeb Dunnuck, April 2023, Score: 97-100

One of the gems from Pauillac is unquestionably the 2022 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande, which is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. A hypothetical blend of the 2019 and 2020, it's a full-bodied, concentrated, opulent Comtesse offering beautiful blue fruits, some chocolate, leafy herbs, and undeniable minerality, ripe, velvety tannins, and a great finish. Despite the higher Cabernet Sauvignon component, this stays silky, expansive, and incredibly sexy. It's going to be drinkable with just 4-5 years of bottle age but should have a lengthy drink window. Hats off to director Nicolas Glumineau for another legendary wine from this château.

  • Jane Anson, April 2023, Score: 98

Exceptionally well controlled, delivering grip and tension alongside the creamy ripe blackberry, cassis and raspberry puree fruits, studded with cloves, cocoa bean, violet, iris, wet earth, heather, mandarin, orange zest, slate. Another exceptional vintage from a property that is delivering at the top of its game, this impresses without seeming to try too hard. Precision winemaking also, with very low pumpovers, reduced by half from a decade ago, and no added sulphites until putting the wine into barrel. 3.65ph, 31h/h yield, with around 50% of production split between this and Reserve.

La Mission Haut Brion 2022 has all the components of a modern great. On the nose it is initially understated, delicately floral. With some coaxing, more serious dark fruits emerge, followed by crushed rock and toasted coffee with more swirling; it’s incredibly inviting. Lithe on the palate, with such a soft smooth mouthfeel that almost caresses, and the acidity nicely in check. The fine, powdery, almost chalky tannins build slowly beneath, while the ripe perfectly precise fruit rides just above. The length goes on and on, this is such a complete wine.

Reminds me of the 1978, but brighter and more precise. 51.7% cabernet sauvignon, 43.2% merlot and 5.1% cabernet franc.

  • Decanter, April 2023, Score: 97

Gorgeous intensity on the nose, really fragrant and perfumed, richly scented with black fruits and bramble berries. Round, full, persistent and thrilling on the palate, a perfect balance between rich, concentrated and intense fruit and lively acidity. There is density and crispness while remaining quite pure and focussed, no overt over ripeness or heaviness. Precise and elegant, juicy and alive. This has supreme charm. 4pH.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 19+

The Grand Vin focuses on its Cabernet backbone, giving it a ramrod-straight appearance, length, and attitude that is as forthright as any wine in this vintage. Even though the fruit is steadfast, it is also fleshy, pliable and incredibly pure. The balance is spectacular, and the length is incredible, too. But, strangely, it does not grow on the palate, nor does it broaden in common with the second wine. Instead, it puts all of its efforts into lengthening the palate and driving the volume of flavours on and on. This is a thrilling study in Cabernet and a miracle of freshness and dynamism. This is a great La Mission, and it will live for decades.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2023, Score: 17.5

  • Jeb Dunnuck, April 2023, Score: 95-97

While I don't see the 2022 Château La Mission Haut-Brion matching the legendary wines from this address at this early stage, it's nevertheless a gorgeous wine in the making. Based on 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc, it has a pure, elegant, lengthy style as well as classic cassis and darker cherry fruits, some smoky, tobacco, scorched earth nuances, medium to full body, perfectly ripe tannins, and a great finish. I love its tannins, and it's a forward, seamless, balanced beauty that will shine with just short-term cellaring.

  • Jane Anson, April 2023, Score: 97

One of the most intense Missions that I can remember in terms of colour, but the density in the phenolics is beautifully balanced on the palate by red roses and peony aromatics, edges of violet, incense, cigar box, black pepper spice, with clear grip and fierce concentration. Delivers an exceptional feeling of walking the line between excess and restraint, hard to resist. Yields a little higher on Cabernet Sauvignon than in Haut-Brion, so higher percentage here.

It appears to be commandingly oaky, but as it is so well integrated, it is hard to see this carpentry, aside from on the finish, where it brings crisp sappiness and mouthwatering traction. Introverted, grand, layered and exotic, this will be a sleeper, and it is clearly made of stunning raw materials, so do not dive in for at least a decade. Interestingly, they harvested the eastern sides of the vines and the western sides of the vines separately, ensuring that the fruit 16 was all in perfect condition as it entered the winery. • Neal Martin, March 2022, Score: 91

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a cohesive nose with wild strawberry comingling with blood orange, later touches of pressed rose petals. The palate is very well balanced with neatly integrated oak (40% new), fine salinity, fresh and lightly spiced towards its lingering finishing. Just pure, unadulterated Pinoté.

  • Decanter, November 2021, Score: 93

Bright cherry fruit, clean and forward on the nose, with hints of spice and a lilting feel on the palate enlivened by plenty of fresh acidity that carries it to a pleasantly balanced finish. This is blended from ten small parcels scattered throughout Gevrey and thus reflects the totality of the appellation. Bertrand and his sisters are continuing to work in the tradition of their father Claude: destemming the fruit, punching down during the fermentation and ageing the village wine in about one-third new casks.

  • William Kelley, January 2022, Score: 90-92

Aromas of cherries, cassis, loamy soil and spices preface the 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Village, a medium-bodied, lively, precise and nicely concentrated wine that exemplifies the ideal of intensity without weight. It is well worth seeking out.

The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru had only finished its malolactic two weeks before my visit. Though I spent time with the sample from barrel, I think it was just a bit too soon to really get a reading on the nose. The palate is more expressive and harmonious: crunchy black cherry and blueberry fruit, fine structure, a touch of white pepper leaving the mouth tingling on the finish. Give this 4-6 years in bottle because there is a fine Charmes-Chambertin here.

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very pure and quite precocious bouquet with black cherries, crushed violet and peony aromas, actually not unlike a Romanée-Saint-Vivant in style. Lying at the top of the Clos just below the Château, in a parcel called “des Papes” reputedly reserved for the Popes of Avignon, the Drouhin Laroze hectare of vines is one of the very best positioned in Clos de Vougeot. In 2020 they de-stalked 100% of the fruit as the wine had so much natural density. This is a deeply impressive wine, with broad shoulders and the layers of structured intensity easily support the slightly higher alcohol level of this vintage. A powerful wine with tremendous ageing potential.

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18.5

I am always a sucker for this wine, and while the price hikes up a bit here, you can certainly taste more elegance and accuracy. Floral and borderline exotic, this is a flavoursome, pure Clos de Vougeot, and it will be the most forward of these three Grands Crus.

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2021, Score: 92-95

No stems. A significant, dense purple black colour. Lush raspberry and sun-dried cherries, the signature of the vintage. Sturdy and weighty, the tannic structure offers some relief which will help this wine come together later on in life. Some peaches in the fruit mix too.

The Grivot parcel of Clos de Vougeot is in the lower section of this large Grand Cru. Such a location was a huge advantage in 2020, benefitting from the vineyard’s excellent water retention capacity during the drier summer period. Packed with layered crumble and bramble fruit aromas. On the palate this is lush and generous yet still graceful, less heavy than the traditional perception of the Clos. Very full bodied and opulent, with rounded tannins on the finish.

The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine definition, taut and fresh with a well-defined finish. Here, I actually find more in the mouth than on the nose, at least at the moment. Hopefully the aromatics will kick on during élevage. Drink 2025 - 2045

The supple but mouth coating and velvet-textured larger scaled flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract while delivering excellent persistence on the youthfully austere, powerful and balanced finale. You will have to wait a very long time for this wine to emerge from its shell, but it is certainly destined for stardom (one day). Very closed and elemental in the glass and rather muscular, too, this is a terrific Clos de Vougeot and in time this stands a chance of being one of the most sensual and expressive examples of this vineyard in this vintage.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 94-97

Dark black purple in colour, ultra-concentrated in the rich ripe raspberry mode, but not over the top. What an incredible concentration of fruit on the palate! Super-dark raspberry, firm Clos Vougeot tannins but not overdone, just the right acidity. This is certainly a very good wine, and may develop into something even more spectacular.

This is a blend of three premiers crus: Cherbaudes, Petite Chapelle, and Bel-Air. That the three crus encircle the block of grands crus including Chambertin Clos de Bèze and Chapelle Chambertin helps to explain the huge complexity achieved in this wine. This is savoury and poised, with pliant tannins. 70% new oak gives backbone and smoky complexity. A superb cuvée.

Guyon's 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées is showing brilliantly from bottle, unwinding in the glass with a complex bouquet of rose petal, dark wild berries, cinnamon and dark chocolate that's complemented by carnal nuances of grilled game bird and smoked meats. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a sapid core of fruit, bright acids and powdery structuring tannins, capturing the inherently gourmand qualities of Aux Brûlées in a less dramatic register than that occupied by the sunnier 2015 and 2017 vintages chez Guyon. While the real fireworks—aromatic and textural—will come with some bottle age, it's already very impressive.

A blend of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot, picked between 5th and 15th October. The nose takes some coaxing from the glass; raspberry, a touch of Dorset plum, wild strawberry and with further aeration there are touches of orange rind developing. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannins, very focused, hints of dark chocolate on the entry, wonderful mineralité and poise towards the seamless finish with a creamy veneer. Long in the mouth, this is a sensual Ausone. Drink 2015-

  • Robert Parker, February 2013, Score: 98+

The 2010 Ausone struck me as another brilliant, potentially perfect wine, which should come as no shock to people who have been following Vauthier’s work over the last decade or more. Backward and intense, this wine offers up notes of crushed chalk/rock mineralilty interwoven with blueberry, black raspberry and cassis as well as some graphite and vanillin. It is incredibly rich but at the same time precise, fresh and vivacious. This is a super wine, but it will require enormous patience from its potential suitors. Forget it for a decade and drink it over the following 50+ years. One of the other perfectionist, compulsive producers in St.-Emilion is Alain Vauthier, who is now capably assisted by his daughter.Drink: 2023-2073

  • Robert Parker, May 2011, Score: 98-100

Alain Vauthier's wines have been so remarkable since he acquired full control of Ausone thatreaders probably feel I have thrown my critical wits away. However, the proof is in the tasting, and the 2010 Ausone is unquestionably extraordinary. There are 1,500 cases of this beauty, which exhibits an inky/blue/purple color as well as an exotic, seamless bouquet of incense, Asian spices, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. Full-bodied with a striking liqueur of minerality as well as a magical combination of complexity, substance and nobility, it reveals softer tannins than I expected for this vintage, so perhaps it will be more accessible in its youth than recent Ausone vintages have tended to be. It is another prodigious effort from Vauthier that should be drinkable in 6-8 years and keep for a half century. Drink: 2017 - 2042

  • James Suckling, April 2011, Score: 96-97

There is something almost unnerving with Ausone this year. It has almost supernatural fruit character and earth shattering acidity. Full and tannic, it finishes with a dark fruit jam but then goes to citrus acidity and freshness. A tiny bit too much.

  • Decanter, April 2011, Score: 19.5

As pure as the '09 but a more emphatic structure. 55% Cabernet Franc in the blend. Fragrant fruit and floral nose. Dense, ripe fruit and an abundance of firm but finely knit tannins. Minerally freshness provides a classical edge. Great length and persistence. Huge ageing potential. Drink 2022-2060.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2011, Score: 18.5

26 hl/ha. Dark crimson with a bright crimson rim. Very serious nose – so different from the Chapelle! 55% Cabernet Franc, 45% Merlot. Lovely punch and scent on the nose and then real tight impact on the palate. Not the completeness of Pétrus but a very good vintage expression. Some warm berries triumph over terroir but this is sweet then tight and tough. Extremely youthful. Very drying on the end. Cabernet Franc has dominated since 2005. Very rich and exuberant overall. Vivacious and not too, too dry on the finish. Less exaggerated than some other recent vintages. Drink 2022-2040

  • Wine Spectator, April 2011, Score: 94-97

Very sappy and intense, offering racy red licorice, red currant and violet notes, with nice taut acidity and a long, minerally finish. Combines power and austerity, with excellent drive. For those who like backbone in their wines. -J.M.

The new cellar at Le Pin was inaugurated in the 2011 vintage. Fragrant with lifted notes of roasted coffee, liqueur-like bramble fruit and maple syrup. In certain years, Le Pin can be surprisingly Burgundian but this year, its underlying density is quintessentially Pomerol. Its chiselled personality gives the 2011 an overall light, elegant touch.

  • Neal Martin, September 2021, Score: 93

The 2011 Le Pin is quite high-toned on the nose with pure black cherries, Seville orange mocha and fig, well defined and developing more pressed flower aromas with aeration. The palate is rounded and pure, velvety in texture, slightly lower in acidity than its peers but very harmonious with a touch of spice towards the finish. This seems to manifest more complexity with aeration with a prolonged spicy aftertaste. This is actually showing better than the bottle that I drank in 2020. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.

  • Neal Martin, June 2020, Score: 90

The 2011 Le Pin is a vintage that I tasted in barrel but inexplicably never in bottle. It was picked on September 12 and 13 at 35hl/ha and, significantly, it was the first vintage to be vinified in the new winery. I gave it a tepid reception back then, and almost a decade later, though Jacques Thienpont clearly has a soft spot for the 2011, I cannot confess to being as taken with it as the 2012 or 2014, for example. It has retained a Burgundy, quasi-Musigny bouquet of red berry fruit infused with mocha and black truffle, the mocha element becoming pronounced after three or four hours. You might describe it as comely, yet far from profound. The palate is medium-bodied with fine cohesion. I would not call the 2011 a complex Le Pin, although it has developed an appealing rounded body and slightly granular texture. The red fruit is infused with brown spices and mocha, a subtle gamy/ferrous note emerging with aeration. But it never quite kicks in like the finest vintages, content to remain a “very pleasant Pomerol” rather than a “knock ’em dead Le Pin.” It is at its peak now and is best drunk over the next decade. 2020-2030

  • Robert Parker, April 2012, Score: 94-96

Coming in at 13.3% natural alcohol, this 2011 is a blockbuster Pomerol revealing loads of black currant, kirsch, and raspberry fruit intermixed with hints of licorice, spring flowers and spicy, smoky oak. As always, there is an exoticism to this dense purple-colored offering, and its opulence and flamboyance are hard to resist. This stunningly proportioned, flamboyant Pomerol is somewhat atypical for the vintage. It should drink well for 15+ years. Drink: 2012-2027.

  • James Suckling, April 2012, Score: 92-93

Gorgeous nose of blueberries and flowers such as roses. Full-bodied, with racy tannins and citrus acidity. Minerally too. This is firm and lanky for Le Pin. Normally a little more voluptuous but not an easy vintage for Merlot. It was picked the 9th and 10th of September. Pure Merlot.

  • Decanter, April 2012, Score: 17.5

Restrained and elegant in style. Great purity of fruit, a silky texture and tannins and a very long finish. Somewhat in the mould of the 2006 and 2008? Drink 2020-2030. (4 stars).

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2012, Score: 18

Deep rich black cherry colour. Gently toasty nose, essentially red fruited and just a little perfumed. Fine, seemingly gentle tannins. Marked by scented freshness, making it hard not to make some reference to burgundy, though the tannins are denser. As with so many in 2011, alcohol was almost 1% lower than in 2010, changing the balance and increasing the wine's approachability. First vintage in the new, neat and architecturally simple but elegant cellar, all sun-reflecting limestone and reassuring oak doors, attractive angles within and without. Just in time for the 2011 vintage. Harvested 12-13 September (early ripeness on gravel allowing retention of freshness, says Fiona Morrison MW, aka Mrs Jacques Thienpont). Yield 35 hl/ha. Pumping over only in the early part of fermentation, again to retain freshness, then the wine was left alone. Drink 2018-2030

  • Wine Spectator, April 2012, Score: 93-96

Delivers dark, captivating black tea, fig and plum notes, with nicely rounded flesh and a long, smoldering feel. The tannins sneak up slowly but are prevalent in the end, with a loamy hint emerging steadily through the finish, which opens slowly and forcefully. This is very solid and among the top wines of the vintage. Tasted non-blind.

Made from the white grape variety Arneis which means ‘rascal’ in local dialect. Bruno Giacosa, along with Alfredo Currado of Vietti, pioneered the development of Arneis in the 1970s. While a localised hailstorm sadly impacted quantities of the 2023, Bruno is very happy with the quality. Bright and fresh, there is a pure, saline character redolent of crushed oyster shell to the juicy stone fruits. Beautifully complex with its white floral notes and intense minerality. A firm Goedhuis favourite. Drink 2023-2027

This is less exotic though that is not to say that there is none to the smoky nose that is comprised primarily mineral reduction notes. There is good ripeness, concentration and power to the medium weight flavors that manage to retain solid delineation before culminating in a driving finish. As the typical Les Clos goes this is a good deal more forward and should drink well young. Drink 2018+

A very good vineyard producing this fine wine, bright lemon yellow in colour. Lovely rich full honeyed aromas. This wine has extraordinary drive, with hints of fresh clotted cream and subtly nutty layers. Strong and full with almost a tannic weight on the finish, it has so much depth.

Lovely, straight and pure. Well defined and driven. A pure and salty wine with intensity and shimming minerality. This is glassy and delicate and has a lovely long line to a lively finish. No richness here. 18.5

Striking deep purple colour. Sweet Morello cherry and liquorice aroma lead onto a full and generous palate with succulent dark berry flavours. The tannins are harmonious with a light chalky texture and the flavours linger beautifully on the finish.

  • Neal Martin, November 2022, Score: 93-95

The 2021 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is very pure and perfumed, macerated red cherries, wild strawberry, kirsch and rose petal scents, an underlying mineralité that will become more conspicuous with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite firm tannins (more like a Mazis?) leading to a sapid, slightly peppery finish that lingers. Needs to knit together but great potential. Drink 2025-2042

A luxurious purple colour. The bouquet is very classy, much fuller deep raspberry notes, and suggesting a touch of velvet to follow. Dark fruit with some fresher redder points popping up, good acidity but no shortage of fruit to cover it. Very good. Drink from 2027-2035.

  • Goedhuis, April 2016, Score: 94-96

A wine of huge concentration, depth and, most importantly of all, polish. This is an outstanding Las Cases with 85% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is a wonderfully layered wine, focusing on dark cassis fruit, with hints of liquorice and black toffee. It balances a touch of St Julien grace and sweetness, with the typically bold structure that one expects from this fine château marching alongside its neighbour, the great Ch Latour.

  • Neal Martin, July 2019, Score: 97

The 2015 Léoville-Las Cases has an almost clinical, brilliantly defined bouquet of mineral-rich black fruit, cedar and veins of fresh mint. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, beautifully judged acidity, exquisite balance and tangible energy toward the finish of graphite-infused blackberry and a hint of clove. This is one of the appellation’s most sophisticated offerings in 2015. Chapeau, Jean-Hubert Delon. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

  • Neal Martin, April 2016, Score: 95-97

The 2015 Leoville Las-Cases has the highest Cabernet contents in recent years, 85% and 9% of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc respectively, partly because some of the old Merlot vines were blended into the deuxième vin. Picked between 22 September and 9 October, a total of 15 days picking, it will be matured in 85% new oak. The alcohol level is 13.8%, higher than 2010 for example. Jean-Hubert Delon has crafted an extremely pure and tensile bouquet, almost pixelated with blackberry, briary, slate and oyster shell aromas that blossom in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, svelte and sensual on the entry, the tannins a little edgy with a gentle crescendo: black fruit, tons of minerals, real focus and precision towards the finish. This is a superlative Léoville Las-Cases with the substance to suggest long-term aging will be repaid.

  • Antonio Galloni, December 2017, Score: 98

The 2015 Léoville Las Cases is simply captivating. Sumptuous, racy and explosive in the glass, the 2015 is endowed with tremendous energy from start to finish. An exotic melange of crème de cassis, graphite, menthol and licorice bursts onto the palate as the 2015 shows off its alluring personality. Spectacularly rich, dense and full-throttle, with huge tannins that are nearly buried underneath the fruit, the 2015 is an unusual Las Cases. It is also breathtakingly beautiful. Readers who can find it should not miss it. Drink 2030-2055.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2016, Score: 95-98

A vivid, mesmerizing wine, the 2015 Léoville Las Cases is stunning in its beauty. Unusually rich and sumptuous for Las Cases, the 2015 possesses magnificent intensity and power from start to finish. Blackberry jam, charcoal, smoke, licorice and asphalt are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass, but the 2015 truly stands out for its vertical structure and overall intensity. At the same time, the 2015 is an unusually ripe, exotic Las Cases with much more flesh and voluptuousness in its curves than is the norm. In that sense, the 2015, is not at all typical for Las Cases. And yet it is striking. The 14.5% alcohol is the highest recorded here.

  • Wine Advocate, April 2018, Score: 98+

Composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 6% Merlot, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Léoville Las Cases has a slightly closed nose, revealing notes of crème de cassis, baked blueberries and black forest cake with touches of licorice, violets and Indian spices plus a waft of dusty soil. The palate is medium to full-bodied, concentrated and built like a brick house, with firm, ripe, velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and spicy. Drink 2025-2050.

  • Wine Advocate, August 2022, Score: 95

Richer and more demonstrative than the 2016, the 2015 Léoville Las Cases dodders up generous aromas of sweet berries, pencil shavings and loamy soil, framed by a deft application of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, broad and expansive, with a fleshy core of fruit, succulent acids and a giving, gourmand profile, like many 2015s from the Northern Médoc, it's already quite structurally open today, and it will likely attain its peak before both the 2014 and 2016 vintages that bookend it. For many consumers, that may be an advantage. Drink 2025-2055.

  • James Suckling, April 2016, Score: 96-97

This is an ethereal young wine with blackberry and violet aromas and flavors. Full body, very firm and silky tannins and a superb finish. Lovely length and purity to this. 85% cabernet sauvignon, 6% merlot and 9% cabernet franc.

  • Decanter, April 2016, Score: 96

At 94% (85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Cabernet Franc) this is the highest-ever Cab content in this grand vin. Very dense at first but full of power and elegance, with lots of energy. Beautifully made, and seems more Pauillac than St-Julien. This will be a very great wine.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2016, Score: 19.5++

(85 Cabernet Sauvignon, 9 Cabernet Franc, 6 Merlot) | 85% new oak. | 13.8% alc. | 76 IPT. This is the highest ever alcohol levels at Las Cases (mainly because Cabernet was harvested at 13.5%) and also the highest combined Cabernet percentage ever of 94%. Pierre Graffeuille, commercial director, explained that less and less Merlot will be used here in the future because of global warming. I had to take a deep breath several times while tasting this wine because it not only possesses extraordinary intensity balanced with extraordinary weightlessness but the sheer style and panache here is shocking. Utterly sublime in every way this is a tour de force for Las Cases. The tannins are immense but also fit and lithe and there is, once again, the dramatic spiciness from the July heat spike which seems to joust with the ultra-fine tannins coming from the stunningly ripe skins. The aroma alone is worth the entry fee. This is a truly great wine.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2019, Score: 17.5

Tasted blind. Dark crimson. Bonfire char on the top. Then very smooth, sweet and beguiling. Easy to appreciate. No heat. Early developer, though there is no shortage of tannin here! Drink 2023-2042.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2016, Score: 17.5

85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot 9% Cabernet Franc - highest proportion of Cab ever. 85% new barrels. More voluptuous nose than some earlier vintages. Bone-dry finish. Pretty concentrated and with some richness. Solid and mineral but not (quite) as obdurate as it used to be. Fruit and ink combo. Minerals like Pauillac on the end. Grabs the attention. 13.85% Drink 2027-2040

  • Tim Atkin, May 2016, Score: 94

Two records set here: the highest ever percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and the highest alcohol level at 13.8! This is a ripe style, but has the classic Las-Cases backbone, with cassis and fruitcake notes, fine tannins and excellent oak integration. Drink: 2023-32

  • Wine Spectator, April 2016, Score: 94-97

Very tightly focused, with both charcoal and iron harnessing the core of dark currant and blackberry fruit flavors. Sleek in feel, but not for lack of depth, as this is brimming with dark fruit and terroir, just in a more austere fashion.

  • LPB, November 2022, Score: 97

The 2015 Leoville Las Cases is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Merlot and is deep garnet in color. It prances out with showy scents of raspberry preserves, warm cassis, and chocolate-covered cherries, plus hints of tar, tapenade, crushed rocks, and unsmoked cigars. Medium-bodied, the palate is so velvety and refreshing, delivering delicately played black fruits with loads of earthy accents and compelling restraint on the finish. Drink 2024-2054.
