Goedhuis, April 2023
From a very special lieu dit within the Lafite Rothschild estate, this wine was released by the Rothschild family. A blend of 40% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Petit Verdot, it possesses a superb Pauillac identity. Scented dark berries with hints of flint and graphite combine to give a deep structure, with a rich volume and all the subtle refinement that is so characteristic of this famous family’s wines. A brilliant representation of the appellation.

The 2015 Barolo Margheria shows the textural breadth of Serralunga in its compelling interplay of succulent, layered fruit and bright, soil-driven tones, with mineral inflections that add layers of complexity. Sage, tobacco, cedar, rose petal, menthol, anise and dried flowers fill out the wine's frame effortlessly. All the elements are nicely balanced. In 2015 the Margheria is all class. Drink 2023-2041.

You can taste the softness and richness of the warm vintage in the 2015 Barolo Margheria. The wine offers dark fruit flavors and lots of rich, plump fruit at the back. This is a softly textured wine that can also be consumed in the near or medium term. This single-vineyard Barolo from Serralunga d'Alba ages in botti grandi for 36 months. The vines are 60 years old, and the soils are rich with limestone clay. Drink 2020-2040.

A very charming Grand Cru, exemplifying the flamboyance Nathalie found in the 2020 vintage. Creamy, generous, and lively with deliciously sweet summer loganberries. This has layered depth, reflecting the wines Grand Cru status. It flows through the palate and the tannins sit comfortably underneath, giving an edge of grip and energy. Excellent.

The 2020 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru has an attractive, lively bouquet with predominantly red fruit laced with forest floor and tarry notes. It's a touch reductive at the moment, but it opens nicely in the glass. The palate is well-balanced and fleshy, but it lacks complexity and feels a little anonymous towards the finish. This is a perfectly fine Corton but has less to say than the best. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2020 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru is the one cuvée that had slight suggestions of some over-ripe fruit , though minor and this could be subsumed with bottle age. The palate is well balanced and here, I could not find any sur-maturité, but a sensual, velvety texture and a touch of spiciness towards the harmonious finish that is blurred by a little warmth of alcohol, a whopping 15.0° in this cuvée. Drink 2028 - 2050

Burghound, April 2022, Score: 90
An acceptably fresh nose features a layered mix of ripe red and dark cherry, cassis and discreet floral nuances. There is better freshness and verve to the well-defined and more refined medium-bodied flavors that display outstanding length on the bitter pit fruit-inflected finish. I like the balance though it's hard to predict whether the nose will regain freshness with some bottle aging though my score offers the benefit of the doubt that it will. Drink 2032+

Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18.5+
This is one half step ahead of the Clos du Roi on account of the complexity and amplitude of flavour. There is a little more of each component, and instead of becoming too showy or rich, it just becomes longer and finer. This is a dreamy vintage and one of the best value Grands Crus of the entire campaign.

Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 89-93
Rich purple, perhaps not quite so dense. Ripe strawberry with some floral rose notes in a concentrated register, then an explosion of blackcurrant, blackberry and some fresher red berry notes as well on the palate, soft and liquid, though the alcohol is showing, at 15%.

The Il Marroneto 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie reveals elegance and power all in one go. The fruit quality is crisp and tonic, yet the wine supports mid-weight concentration and a more elaborate style. This vintage from Il Marroneto has two personalities. On the one hand, you get a wine that is packed with beautiful primary fruit but that is slightly more immediate; on the other, you get a wine that promises good aging thanks to its freshness and the silky tannins that melt onto the palate. It is young but also aged. It is racy but also complex. Fruit comes from the vineyard under the Madonna delle Grazie chapel, and the wine ages in special oak casks for 41 months. This is a production of 8,500 bottles. Drink 2025 - 2045. .

More structured than the Brunello Annata and exhibiting the firm’s trademark of mesmerizing finesse, this captivating stunner has lovely aromas of blue flower, rose, wild herb and a whiff of fine tobacco blend. The luminous, youthfully austere but already delicious palate has irresistible precision and a pristine quality, delivering ripe raspberry, baking spice and black tea alongside tight, refined tannins. It’s young but already beautifully balanced, with bright acidity. Spoiler alert: this is only for fans of extremely refined, exhilarating and terroir-driven wines. Drink 2028–2048.

Lavaux St Jacques is one of Gevrey’s highest vineyards and is renowned for making wines of great elegance. The cooling high altitude is offset by its southerly exposure and creates a perfectly balanced wine in 2021 which copes with the 50% new oak it has been aged in this year. A sweet attack reminiscent of syrup of grenadine, combines perfectly with the lively freshness from this higher altitude site. The appealing volume on the finish gives harmony and complexity.

The name is said to derive from the Sorb apple which may have been planted here many centuries ago. There is a high proportion of chalk in the soil which François credits to giving the wines from this vineyard their vitality and energy. This was a star performer tasting from cask, combining wild fruits of the forest with some spice of oak. Delicious volume, almost glycerol-like, and a full feeling of broad texture, with some drier tannic sensations. Great length and huge potential.

Delicious volume, almost glycerol-like, and a full feeling of broad texture, with some drier tannic sensations. Great length and huge potential.

Due to be bottled in January, the 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Sorbé 1er Cru is more backward than the Millandes at the moment, tightly-coiled red berry fruit, orange rind and a light steely note. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but firm tannins, quintessential Morey-Saint-Denis with conspicuous backbone, judiciously spiced towards the finish. Bold but not overpowering, this is a nicely crafted Clos Sorbé. Drink 2025-2040.

Goedhuis, December 2022
This, the oldest section of vines within the Rollin estate, was planted by Raymond back in 1945. The soil is an excellent representation of the appellation, combining clay and red iron with a firm bedrock of limestone. Bright purple colour, this has a fine clarity of red fruits, raspberry and loganberry. A soft acidity, with a pleasant line of tannic tension. Direct and pure.

Solid and surprisingly dense purple. The bouquet is more rustic than the Savigny, a question of the vineyard, which has a good proportion of old and very old vines. A full mouthful with a more sombre style of fruit, this is really Aloxe style terroir. Drink from 2025-2028.

Made from vines situated in Petits Epenots, this is a striking wine, combining flamboyance and charm. Wild berry, blackberry and apple characters. Very layered, the initial scent and charm give way to bolder depth and weight. It builds on the palate and, despite the obvious power, it is finely layered, with a lovely personality of nuanced spice and nutmeg on the finish. Excellent.

Mid crimson colour. Not one of the more ebullient noses at first, on its reserve. Plenty of weight of fresh fruit a little bit of fresh orange, otherwise raspberry and redcurrant, no great weight at the back but good length. This needs and will get a longer elevage. Drink from 2027-2033.

Sitting on the southern boundary of the appellation, Justin commented that Clos Rousseau’s naturally cooler location encouraged a later budding in 2021, meaning it was less impacted by the frost. Full of cherry and raspberry, with a tinge of oak spice. Delicate purity, with light mineral styled tannins. Very pleasing, this 100% destalked cuvée is a very true example of Southern Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir.

Just Aux Pruniers this year as Pressonniers was recently replanted and took too much disease damage. So 4 barrels instead of 16. Concentrated purple, with a little reduction. Striking brick red colour, this shows both tension and structure. The opening sensation of sweet, charming strawberry flavours is somewhat misleading, as the breadth and boldness of fruit behind provide both power and muscle. Somber if fresh aromas include those of plum, dark currant, newly turned earth and a whiff of the sauvage. 15% whole bunch vinification. The colour is noticeably more robust than the preceding wines, as too is the bouquet, backed a little by new oak (30%) but showing a good intensity of robust raspberry fruit on the nose, which carries through across the palate. This has a good balance between fruit and structure. Drink from 2025-2030.

This Premier Cru owes its name to the Prior of the Abbaye de Cluny. The monastery historically owned all the great Gevrey Chambertin vineyards. Nicolas likes to give this vineyard a little more new oak, than his other Premiers Crus, going up to as much as 60%, which it fully supports. Georgian brick red, with a whole bunch wild alpine fruit scent. Densely concentrated and a tightly entwined tannic core which depletes as an enthralling degree of sweet Pinot fruit flavours evolves and offers the final lingering sensation. A total beauty.

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru is blended with 60% new oak and 15% whole bunches. This was showing some reduction on the nose though there seems to be ample fruit here that will come out after racking. A mentholated top note is present on the restrained, fresh and cool aromas of red and black cherry laced with enough earth character to mention. The equally refined but punchier medium weight flavors exude a discreet minerality that adds a sense of lift to the more structured, powerful and youthfully austere finish. There’s slightly more depth here but it’s also sufficiently strict that this will certainly need at least some patience. Drink 2031+

This 3 hectare plot of 50-year-old vines is the family’s pride and joy and plays an ambassadorial role in the reputation of the commune of Pernand Vergelesses, in the same way as the hill of Corton does. Red cherry and cranberry aromas. The stony nature of the soil creates a wine with noticeable minerality, that in its youth can appear somewhat strict verging on austere, but with age shows sweet mature Pinot at its absolute very best. The style of the 2021 vintage is a perfect reflection of this wine’s great potential.

The 2021 Pernand-Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses 1er Cru comes from four hectares of vines between white and red, the vines averaging 40 years old. There is a bit of stemminess on the nose here. It's pretty earthy with wild hedgerows. The palate is nicely structured and spicy with black pepper and thyme. It's firm and just a little austere on the finish. It simply needs to gain a bit more joie-de-vivre by the time of bottling. Drink 2024-2032.

80% whole bunch vinification- they have a significant holding, though yields were just 14 hl/ha. Glowing purple. This has a notably more classic nose, less dependent on the vinification technique. The fruit fills out the middle with a high-class raspberry fruit, fewer black notes at the back and while the dark pepper is clearly present it is more surrounded by the fruit. Drink from 2025-2030.
